Installing Brake Controller and 7-way Trailer Connector on 2014 Ford Focus

Question:

If I put a 5 pin adapter on my 4pin wiring harness, will I be able to use the brakes on my trailer or will I news to get a 5 or 6 pin connection to use them? I have a 2014 Ford Focus hatch, and need to know if I can use this harness with brakes before I get it. Thank you!

If your trailer has electric brakes and a 6-or7-way trailer connector, you'll need to install a brake controller on your vehicle to actuate the trailer brakes. Before attempting to tow your trailer, I'd recommend you determine the fully loaded weight of your trailer, and ensure it doesn't exceed the towing capacity of your Focus.

If your trailer weighs less than the towing capacity of the vehicle, you'd begin by choosing a brake controller. The Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160 is a reasonably-priced controller that would work well with an electric brake equipped trailer. You'd then need an install kit to match the connector on the trailer. If the trailer has the more common 7-way connector, you'll need the # ETBC7. If the trailer has the 6-pole connector, use part # ETBC6. I'll provide you a photo that shows the difference between the two.

The install kit includes an adapter to convert an existing 4-pole connector into a 6 or 7-way (depending on which kit you need). If you do not already have a 4-pole, you'd need to install one like part # 118548.

I'll link you to the install instructions for the controller, as well as to a video showing a typical installation. I'll also link to some of our FAQ articles that you might find helpful..
