Do Frame Holes have to Be Enlarged to Install Curt Trailer Hitch on 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek
Question:
Is there a way to avoid enlarging the holes in the frame by using another type of bolt instead of the carriage bolt? I want to avoid the possibility of voiding any rust proofing warranty by having to enlarge the holes in the frame.

You need to use the mounting hardware that is included with Curt trailer hitch # C13135 or it will void the hitch warranty. The access hole only MIGHT need to be enlarged. It is possible that you will not have to enlarge it at all.
If you do need to enlarge the hole and choose to drill (or any other method that can remove paint/coating from the frame) then you should be able to prime and paint over it after the hardware is run through the access hole. Or Subaru might have small batches of the coating they use that you could reapply.
On the 2014 we installed this hitch on, see video link, we did have to enlarge access holes but it does not appear there is any undercoating (spray-on) in this location. So the frame must be coated differently. We did pain over the area after enlarging the holes.
