Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

If you're looking for a way to get traction in the snow without scratching your rims, these K-Summit chains are your best option. The chain only sits on the tire tread and is fastened to one of the lug nuts on your wheel with an easy-to-use fixing key. There are no attachments behind the wheel like typical tire chains, which ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well. You won't have to stop and readjust these chains either - they self-tension, self-center, and conform to the tire perfectly as you drive, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. These chains are ideal for use in light snow and ice.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you wont be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Because these chains are customizable, the first fitting could take a little time but after that, it's simple. The included instructions will let you know if you need to adjust the chains based on your tire size.

Remove lug cover if present

1. To begin installation, you'll need access to your wheel's lug nuts. If you have a plate covering your lug nuts, pop it off using either the included Allen key or a flathead screwdriver.

Determine size of lug nuts

2. Determine which lug nut adapter you'll need to fit over the nut on your wheel. Attach that adapter to the included fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included.

Lay chains over tire thread

3. Fit the chain over your wheel, getting it as far onto the tire as possible.

Tighten lug nut adapter

4. Using the fixing key, thread the included bolt into the adapter. The other end of the fixing key will attach to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

The adapter secures over your lug nut to hold the K-Summit base in place on your wheel. You might need to use the included spacer to get the chains to sit properly.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2016 Mini Cooper

This is an update to the review for the 2017 MINI Cooper with 205/45-17 tires. By taking off both spacers (red and silver), I was able to get the chains to center on the tire - I might even be able to put one of the chain tightening screws back on, maybe more as the tread wears down. So I think they're going to work well this winter. I'll bump the review up to five stars when I can figure out how to get them to easily fit into the carrying case.

These worked great. The first time I used them, I didnt tighten the screw enough and one of the chains came off while driving. But after learning to tighten them enough, I had no problems. It was a mild winter, but at least I know that driving 20 miles in 5 of unplowed snow up the mountain highway isnt a problem. And I finally figured out how to get them back into the case.

These are adapters to allow the associated chain set fit some uncommon tire lugs. The adapters work flawlessly. Ordered them for the chain set as the rims on my vehicle require them. Fit perfectly as did the chains after adjustment.

However, I don't know how well they actually work on snow and ice. Based on experience with a number of other chain sets I see no reason to doubt their reliability and efficiency.

Backstory: Ordered a set for a trip to Colorado over Christmas & New Year's as we were expecting snow and ice as we were planning to travel to Estes Park, Denver, Colorado Springs, Salida, Buena Vista, Leadville, etc. Received our order quickly and correctly. Tried chains on tires and made fitting adjustments per instructions for exact tire size. Played with the chains a few times to make sure I knew how to get them deployed quickly. They are extremely easy to put on once they are adjusted. Watch the video - it really is that easy.

Fast forward a few weeks, we went on our trip. Got not much more than a dusting the whole trip and never had to put the chains on.

Meanwhile, back home, there were something like 129,000 poor bxxxxxxs waiting for the roads to be cleared and power to be restored from the huge ice and snow storms.

At the end of our trip we drove home over clear roads surrounded by big piles of plowed snow. Arrived home to find our neighbors huge tree uprooted and blown over. We didn't receive any damage. Next day got the hound out of doggie jail pretty much as if nothing had happened.

I like these chains!

So far so good. I’m waiting for snow before I give 5 stars.
It’s recommended you fit the chains before you actually need them to get familiar with the innovative design. I had to remove all 5 yellow bolts since my wheels are larger. Keep the extra hardware but you won’t need them unless you change cars.
Once fitted you’re good to go.
Wear gloves to mount them in about 5 minutes.

I received excellent service from William at etrailer.com. He promptly answered my questions and took my order. The tire chains were shipped the same day and delivered as promised. Kudos to etrailer for their customer service.

Purchased these awesome chains because my 2019 traverse has custom wheels (wider) so traditional chains/cables that wrap around the wheels would cause damage to my brake components. The instructions in the manual can be a little confusing but read and watch the tutorial video and you'll be good to go. I had to remove the exact amount of bolts from the chains it recommended in the manual for my wheels, 5 if I remember correctly. After a couple dry runs installing/removing at home I was ready for big bear. The family and I spent Thanksgiving up on big bear and yes, it snowed A LOT!! The chains worked great and along with a lot of looks from other drivers, I even got compliments from the locals there that obviously are used to driving with chains. When it came time to take them off halfway down the mountain, it was super fast and easy I was done in no time. NOTE: the bolt that goes over the lug nut leaves an indentation on your lug nuts, especially if your vehicle has the chrome finished ones like mine does. Have to buy a new set of front wheel lug nuts and use the old ones for when we drive up to the snow again and use these cool chains!

So these are really expensive but there weren't a lot of options for my wide 22" tires. Are they worth it? Absolutely! These are my first chains so I wasn't sure what to expect, but once you make the initial size adjustments, it is super easy to get these on! I've seen other cars on the side of the road struggling to get their traditional chains on, where you have to lay down the chains, drive over, then wrap them around the tire and secure them.

With these, I just unfold them, push them onto the tires as far as they will go over the top and front and back, and slowly drive forward until they auto-adjust in place. A quick stop to double-check and make sure they are on all the way, and off I go.

Love them!

by:

Although I have not had a chance to use the chains yet, the chains were easy to assemble and put on my truck tires. I received the order in plenty of time before my trip so that was a huge plus.

by:

Bought these for my Model X and so far I’ve only needed to use them a few times. These chains were pretty easy to put on. The hard part is making sure the lug nut grabber has thoroughly grabber the nut so the chains clamp down properly. Watch some YouTube. Videos

The instructions are pretty clear on how to adjust these for your tire size. Do that adjustment as soon as you can after purchase. As this is not fun to do on the side of the road.

Received my Konig K-Summit "K-79's" today. Made the adjustments for my 2023 RAM 1500 Limited tire (285/45/22). Test fitted the Chains as requested. I found the installation easy and straight forward. Hoping things go well in the snow if needed.

by:

I'm going to start this off by saying they were a bit on the pricey side. But then I'm going to say that they were definitely worth it. They are easy to put on and take off. They hold very securely, and they handle magnificently. I spent last winter driving over the Donner Summit in California every single weekend and the chains kept my Lexus in complete control the entire time. I would definitely buy them again.

by:

Fits tight as a drum! The K44 is nice and snug on my 19’s. Kinda nervous about the stress on the tensioning strap and lug nut clinchers, but these things will be sweet if the Engineers did their job right! Only plan to use these for a few miles at a time, so if all goes well they’ll last me a good long while

by:

Awesome grip. Easy to put in and take off. Great for low-clearance (oversized) wheels. Worth the price.

by:

Shipment was delayed and therefore unusable for my long holiday roadtrip. I paid ~$[XX] expedited shipping for no reason.

by:

Fantastic product! The chains were easy to set up and install on my Audi Q7. They worked perfectly.

You will never find better customer service than what I received from etrailer.com and Konig (Pewag). I wish all companies were that good!

Stay the away from this dangerous, poorly designed, incredibly overpriced, disaster waiting to happen, product.
After following etrailers tire size calculator I ordered the K Summit chains for my Mercedes AMGGLC 43. I live full-time in a Mountain Community at 6000 feet and I’ve had many vehicles and experiences with tire chains and cables. I ordered these chains because of their supposed efficacy with high-performance vehicles with low profile tires, etc. Despite adequate practice pre-storm, by myself and both my sons who are in their 20’s, these over priced dangerous pieces of garbage failed on December 20, 2020 during a blizzard in our community while trying to get my sons to the airport. The right sided chain disappeared after less than 2 miles of driving and we were left stranded in a ditch on the wrong side of the road for days before our vehicle could be towed out due to the high demand in the area. I have been driving in snow conditions since I was a teenager, I am now 65. I have driven in worse conditions with 2 Wheel vehicles with regular chains and rarely failed to get home or around when I needed to. My Mercedes AMG has traction control, all wheel drive, slippery mode, and can be raised to avoid obstacles. Nonetheless, in this unusual freak blizzard, when I needed a chain product the most, these failed me and my family miserably. Their customer support consisted of a never ending chain of transfers from one person or department to another, and to this day I’ve never received a refund or gotten satisfaction. If I could’ve burned the remaining K summit chain I would’ve, but I had to settle for the pleasure of throwing the remaining one away in the expensive case it came in. Do yourself and anyone else you know who is shopping for chains a favor and warm them away from this failure prone overpriced piece of junk. RRT.

The Konig self-tensioning snow chains I purchased were easy to install and worked great. However, I only used them once as a test to check them out. It had snowed just before I received them so the timing was great. I live in an area (East Tennessee) that has steep grades so I tested the chains on the grades-forward and backward while moving, stopped on the steepest grade and able to drive away without slipping, and effective when stopping. The chains were also easy to remove. I've done a lot of driving in the snow all over the US and also in Canada using a variety of chains including ice chains with v bars. The Konig chains were by far the easiest chains I've ever had to install. Incidentally, I have a Trail Rated 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited vehicle which I believe worked nicely to enhance the capabilities of both the Jeep and the chains.

etrailer website says Konig K-Summit XXL KON84FR (K78) is VERIFED TO FIT 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 285/44r22 tires. See screenshot.

After receiving Chains, manual clearly states K79 is REQUIRED to fit 285/44r22 tires. See attached manual pic with highlights.

Also, Konig's website also states K79 is needed. See website screenshot attached.

etrailer does not carry the K79 chains. Also, charged me a ~$xx restocking fee to send back the "Confirmed fit" ones they sent that DO NOT fit.

Any other 2022+ Grand Wagoneer owners with 285/44-25 tires, be warned!

by:

These are super easy to put on and take off. Haven't really needed them too much but when I did use them, they were great.

by:

These chains are clearly a return item. Links removed, dirty, AND they are missing the most essential adapters which I confirmed twice with support and the manufacturer that they included the 17mm, 19, and 21/22mmm. It its the new universal U-Adapter that's fine, but one has 3 grips and the other chain has 5. Clearly a mismatch and neither fit my 17MM lugs. We need to process an RMA/Return and IF you can verify a brand new FULLY outfitted kit I will accept that replacement.

by:

Very unique design. Do set them up and put them on before you really need them. The screws that adjust the size do take some time to remove. Unlike others, I had few to no issues getting them off. They fit snuggly on my tires. They were a little hard to get off after releasing the tension, but I guess that is good too. I will have to wait until I need them to put them to the ultimate test.

by:

Fits my Tesla Model Y perfectly and so easy to install compared to other chains! Best of all, it won't damage my rims

by:

Great product. Easy to install!

by:

I love these chains! I purchased them for a BMW X7 M50i, tire size 275/40r22 in front, 315/35r22 rear. The close fit of the chains fits my snow tires without causing damage to the vehicle or tires. It took a bit to figure out installation - the included directions remind me of IKEA instructions (few words, over simplified pictures). The online videos were the most helpful helpful for set-up/fit adjustment and installation. Also, be sure to get the ratchet assembly as close to flush with the wheel as possible. The chains won’t tighten properly if you fail this step. It took a few attempts to get them on the first time because of the learning curve. And still, it was maybe an hour from start to finish, including the removal of screws and changing the lug nut spacer to customize the fit. Once I had that done, actual installation was maybe 5 minutes. I had to drive further than 5 feet to achieve self-tightening (the videos don’t show this), and definitely check that they are secure before driving at speed. Overall, I am confident I can install these alone in adverse weather conditions, should the need arise. I plan to purchase more for other vehicles.

by:

I'm giving these four stars as I haven't tried them in snow. I bought them in Spring to save a few $$.

The instructions are a little weird as the English translation isn't great and the pics are unclear in a few places. The instruction videos on etrailer are very helpful.

You MUST set these up before you need to use them as they have to be sized to your specific tire dimensions and lug nut.

The tightening wrench has a torque setting. When you fit the lug nut connection you tighten until you hear a click. It ends up really tight and took a little work to remove.

After the lug connection is on, you tighten a ratchet before rolling the vehicle to complete installation. I didn't notice at first you only tighten until you see a line of red stitching. Because of that the chain didn't go on property. I reset and tried again and all was fine.

These go on very tight. At least if you follow instructions to the letter.

Hope they do what I need them to do in winter.

Since your vehicle is front wheel drive, you will only need chains on your front tires. I looked your owners manual up online and found there are recommendations for each size tire. • Recommended Snow Chains for 35/12.5-18 Tires on 2002 Ford Excursion
The Titan Chain # TC3831CAM chains are a fit for your 35/12.5-18 tires. The V-Bar design work great in deep snow and on ice but like all snow chains, they shouldn't be used at speeds above 30 miles an hour. If the chains should break or come loose at a speed higher than that, the chains would absolutely beat your Excursion half to death. The chains feature cam tighteners which allow you to cinch the chains up for a good fit to your tires, and the chains are compatible with on or off-road...

  • Will K-Summit Tire Chains Fit on a 2015 Mini Cooper with 205/45-17 Tires and 14mm Lug Nuts
First we need to make sure that what you are measuring is the same as what the K-Summit lug nut adapters fit. The 17 and 19 millimeters is referring to the outside dimension of the lug nut itself and not the size wheel bolt that it fits on. If your lug nuts are indeed 14mm then the K-Summit chains # TH02230K22 would not fit and there isn't a 14mm adapter. The option that requires the second least amount of clearance is the Snow Socks # TCH62.
