Can Tire Chains Be Used on 2008 Scion xB with Larger Aftermarket Wheels and Tires
Question:
I need snow chains. I have tire size 215/45/zr17 firestorm indy 500 tires on aftermarket rims that are 17x8.25. The tires have a very slight stretch to them. Does this pose a problem with chains or can one of the optional adjusters help with this? Can you recommend a correct set of chains for my set up. 2008 Scion xB. Stock height. Thanks. I need the chains for a trip on Jan 19th.

The online edition of the owner's manual for the 2008 Scion xB indicates on page 251 that S-Class chains can be installed on the front tires only. It further states that cable and V-bar type chains cannot be used.
This information is based on Toyota's assumption that you have stock wheels and the stock 205/55-16 tires on the car. Aftermarket products such as larger wheels and wider tires can prevent safe use of chains because the increased diameter and width of your tires will reduce the available clearance within the wheel wells. The reason Toyota specifies that you must use S-Class chains on the stock tires is this limited clearance concern. Keep in mind they say to use low-profile S-Class chains even on the smaller 205/55-16 stock tire size.
We do offer chains that will fit your tires, such as Titan Diamond Pattern chains # TC1540. These and all other chains that fit your tires are shown on the linked page. However, I urge caution before using any chains on the car, at least until you have confirmation from Toyota that the larger aftermarket wheels and tires still allow for safe use of tire chains.
