Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

Bought these to go with our 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. We're often in Utah during the Winter and have already put them to use. They were so easy to put on all by myself. Great design and gave us all the traction we needed to climb a snowy steep mountainside.

by:

I have a 2019 Honda CRV and have never owned tire chains before so I dont have anything to compare these to but they are easy to put on and take off and they conquer a steep icy unpaved drive way in The Catskills perfectly. There are some plastic parts that probably should be metal. One of them - the tension hook - broke on one of my chains (see photo) and when I reported this to etrailer.com with a photo to prove it, they sent another set. So I am pleased overall with the service from etrailer.com but am only giving 4 stars for the product on account of the breakage. Also they rusted after one season but that hasn't impacted performance.

by:

I love this chains, there ridiculously easy to install compared to other chains and cables. Once there on they are on and you don't have to worry about anything loosening and flying off while your driving. I live in Oregon we get snow quite often and it's nice to be able to just throw these on and forget about the icy roads

by:

etrailer was the best source I could find for product and information. These chains are an excellent fit and function for my 2018 CRV and arrived quickly in perfect condition. I have driven confidently through snowy conditions on I80 in California with these in the back several times but have not had to put them on yet.

This product was excellent. I am a female in my mid 20's and had never put chains on my car. I was able to put each one of these on in under a minute! I have already been recommending these to friends

This is why we highly recommend folks get some practice installing/removing the chains while the vehicle is in their driveway or garage. Its much easier to become familiar with the process there than in the snow on the side of a busy road!

by:

Watched videos and practiced once. Product was easy to install when needed and worked well in climbing moderately sloped driveway.

by:

One of the easiest chains over every used. I have used these in the past and decided to buy these again for my minivan.

by:

Looks great, though since it's 100° here and not snowing, I can't test them out.

by:

I might give a 5 rating once I see how they work in real snow/ice. We bought these - just in case we needed them. We haven’t yet used them in actual snow conditions as the little snow we get around sea level near Seattle is easily handled by the all-wheel drive car. The tire chains arrived on time. We tried them on in the garage and they were easy to install and appear to be well made - sturdy. They are very easy to install. It took just minutes and if you put down some cardboard, you likely won’t get wet & dirty. I’ve put on a lot of standard chains on many vehicles large and small and know it’s usually a cold, wet, dirty job. We refreshed our installation practice again late this Fall-2021 before a trip over the mountains to get our kid from college before Thanksgiving. Once again super easy to install. We go over the mountains with great confidence we can chain up quickly if needed.

by:

The best set of tire chains I ever bought... and I have bought a lot of them over the decades. Yes, they are more expensive than those cheaper chains, but REALLY worth the extra cost.

I'm close to 70 years old and I have no trouble putting these chains on and taking them off even when snow is already on the ground. You just need to follow the directions and practice a couple of times in dry weather. Don't wait till you need them and then try to figure it out.

No tools needed. Self adjusting, so no stopping to tighten the chains. Best of all is that they are heavy duty, not cheap steel. These things are probably going to last longer than our cars. We bought them for all our cars.

by:
2014 Subaru Forester

Received these within days of ordering and just in time for snow arriving! I watched the install video one time and they were truly as easy to install as shown. Im confident that they’re going to work great!

2015 Toyota Sienna

Excellent customer service from Sandy J. Patient and thorough as we ran through options for my 2015 Toyota Sienna SE minivan and its somewhat challenging needs. But Sandy made sure that my Konig chains would fit—and indeed they did. The chains are “self tensioning,” but I bought and used the cheap but effective Titan multi arm rubber adjusters anyway. They added more tension still. Chains are never fun to install but everything worked fine. Thanks!

Audi

These are wonderful tire chains. really easy and fast to install. They store nicely in the case provided. Remember to read your Car owner's manual before buying or installing low clearance tire chains. Chains go on rear wheels only on my Audi Q5!

by:

The Good: These chains work really well on snow and ice. I have a nasty driveway in the winter and these babies get my car right up to the house. They install relatively easily if you are on a flat, snow-free surface, but can be a bit stubborn if there is any snow packed around the tire at all.
The Bad: etrailer always seems to be out of this brand, or waiting on their supplier. Two years in a row, I've had to wait multiple weeks to get these delivered, which can be frustrating if the snow is already flying. Order early and be patient.

by:

These chains are soooo easy to install and while we haven't checked them out in the snow yet, based on our experience with other tire chains we think these are going to do the job very well. etrailer had excellent phone support for pre-purchase questions and their shipping was extremely fast.

2018 Honda CR-V

The tire chains that I ordered for my 2018 Honda CRV, tire size 235/60-18, were delivered very quickly (3 days) and very professionally done with tracking status, etc. I practiced putting on the chains following the video and instructions. The second time I put them on was even easier then the first! As a single, 67 year old woman, who has never put on tire chains before, I believe I will feel safe driving my car in snow. I would highly recommend etrailer.com. Their customer support was also great. They were very helpful when I was picking out which chains were best for my car...and me! (Note: I attached 3 photos of the chains on my car but not sure they were uploaded.)

by:

I figured I would not need these chains. I had snow tires on the van but bought these to be safe. My 2wd van couldn't make it up a steep mountain but once I added the chains I was able to make my way up the mountain. They do take some practice putting on and the chains seem to get snagged behind the tires as you are trying to position everything but with practice it gets a little easier.

by:

The instructions were a bit vague, as there was only photos, but I was able to figure it out after a couple of tries and they went on pretty easy. We have not had a chance to see how they do in the ice or snow yet.

Subaru Outback Wagon

Look exactly like Thule, labeled Konig, name change or sale? Too soon to comment on durability in case grade of steel isn't as good, but...

Three years with the same Thules on my wife's Subaru Outback, and experience with no plate thules and Pewag. These are by far the easiest to put on and remove, less than 5 minutes , often done in the dark. My application would be best suited to V-bars (3+" solid ice and steep hill with switchbacks) but the plates do a reasonable job on the ice. The last two winters were El Niño in AK so the set could easily have 100 uses up and down the 1/3 mi hill with no appreciable wear. They've also kept my better half on the hill instead of off of the cliff.

by:
2004 Chevrolet Express Van

Two minutes. Yes, that is how long it took to put these chains on the tire. I didn't believe the other reviewers' reviews, but found out for myself that it's true. Everything is done from the outside of the tire. Brilliant design! Obviously, it's too early to tell how they will fare in the snow & ice this winter, but things are looking really good!
I bought two sets: one for our Lexus RX350 and one for our Chevrolet 2500 Express van.
Both sets fit perfectly. They even supply gloves & a mat to kneel on when putting them on so as not to get wet.
Also, the chains arrived in two days...ahead of schedule.

Chevrolet Colorado

The snow chains worked great!!! They made all the difference while driving in the winter in snowy Colorado. My only recommendation would be to have directions that are a little larger to make it easier to see how to connect everything. Would buy these again for sure!!!!

by:

Product works as described, great service, and thank you Olivia for your help.
I had found the product on another website with a lower price, which I told the sales rep
about. I asked if they would price match which they did. I went with Etrailer not only
for the low price but having purchased from them before I knew that they would provide the
best service. The time estimated for delivery, well they beat that by 4 days... Under promise over deliver!

by:

Excellent product. These folks (trailer) were one of the vendor who still caries these chains. They promised delivery in February, BUT sent the chains to me 2 WEEKS EARLY!!

  • Best Snow Tire Chain Recommendation for 2018 Honda CR-V
In recent years we are starting to see more manufacturers recommend a specific tire chain for a vehicle instead of just saying one with low clearance requirements like what used to be the standard. So the TC2212MM that you referenced is essentially a standard snow cable chain setup that has a Class S compatibility. This means it works in low clearance applications but I would not describe any cable set as durable or easy to install. So I have a bettery choice for your 2018 Honda CR-V....
