how to measure an awning arm

You picked out a beautiful campsite for the weekend, a nice place to pause and relax. But before you can enjoy it, you have a whole checklist for getting your RV set up at your campsite. Getting your manual retractable awning extended is one of those tedious chores. Wrestling with your heavy canopy as you crank it all the way out, turn by turn, is exhausting and takes forever. It's time to find a better way to do this.

Programmable Power Arms

Solera Smart Arm Conversion Kit Touchpad

The Solera Smart Arm 12V power RV awning conversion kit is the first ever programmable option for your trailer or RV. You can easily extend or retract your existing awning with the push of a button. The weatherproof touchpad mounts directly on the base of the right awning arm for easy access. In other words, you no longer have to climb back into your RV to operate your awning. And if you ever find yourself without power, there's a manual override built into the drive head that you can use to retract or extend your awning with a power drill (not included).

Note: The manual override function is not available on 2017 Forest River Cherokee campers.

Best of all, this conversion kit is a great economical option. You don't need to buy new fabric or a new roller to upgrade to a power awning. You just need these new awning arms and endcaps, and you're good to go.

Intelligent Smart Arm Functionality

Weatherproof Touchpad

Solera Smart Arm Conversion Kit Touchpad

On top of extending and retracting your awning, the programmable touchpad enables you to activate and program your awning's settings using the 1-touch safety lock button. Once programmed and locked in place, your settings stay the way you want them. The touchpad also lets you activate and program optional add-on features (sold separately).

Add-On Features

Solera Smart Arm Wind Sensor

The Wind Sensor upgrade (LC715123 - sold separately) offers protection for your awning in poor weather conditions. If strong wind is detected, the awning will automatically retract, giving you piece of mind if you're away from your campsite when bad weather hits. The touchpad enables you to toggle between 3 different levels of wind sensitivity, or you can deactivate the wind sensor altogether. Just mount the sensor below the drive head on the awning arm and plug the wiring harness directly into the Smart Arm touchpad.

If you have an LED light strip on your awning, or you'd like to get one, you can control it right from the awning arm. It gives you 3 levels of brightness to choose from. If you're enjoying your patio as the sun's going down, there's nothing more convenient than being able to turn on the lights right there.

Solera Smart Arm Infrared Security System

To take your awning lights to the next level, another cool feature to add is an infrared security sensor (LC715124 - sold separately). When it detects motion or heat, it automatically turns the awning lights on. The sensor is a great security feature, as well as a convenient backup if you're returning to your RV after dark and need some light to get inside. The sensor range is approximately 8' with a 180-degree radius from its mounting location. The security sensor can be armed with the press of a button on the touchpad. Installation is simple. Just snap the unit into place on the bottom of the drive-side awning arm, just beneath the touchpad.

Automatic Rain Dump

One thing that can quickly ruin your camping trip is a broken awning. It's not easy or cheap to replace, and you can't really enjoy your patio without one. A big hazard to a healthy awning is rain: water pools in the fabric, stretching it out and putting strain on the arms with extra weight it wasn't designed to hold. Next thing you know, the fabric rips - the arms snap - the whole awning comes crashing down, slamming against your RV and leaving you with a big and costly problem.

For traditional awnings, it's up to you to run out in the rain and lower one of the arms yourself. If you're away from your RV when it starts to rain, you can only hope your awning isn't damaged when you get back. Solera awning arms are smarter than that. This conversion kit comes equipped with an automatic rain dump function. As soon as rainwater starts to pool in the fabric, one of the arms will automatically drop, giving your awning a pitched angle. The rainwater will then run off to one side, taking the pressure off your awning and your mind.

Manual Pitch Adjustment

Solera Smart Arm Conversion Kit Manual Pitch Adjustment

It's hard to get your awning in just the right place to keep you in the shade all day, especially with those awnings that are pretty high off the ground. Sometimes you need just a little slant to your awning to keep the sun out of your eyes. The manual pitch adjustment built into these arms gives you that option. Simply pull on one of the arms at the friction joint to drop that corner. It comes down easily and holds itself there for as long as you need it. When it's time to retract your awning, there's no need to readjust it; the awning will slide back into place.

The Solera Smart Arm makes deploying my awning so much easier than the original manual method. Push a button and the awning is out. Installation was straightforward. I did it by myself, but having an assistant would have made some steps of the process a lot easier. My only complaint is that the awning retracts slowly, and sometimes I have to pull the arms into the lower position to get the retraction started. Now I'm not sure if this is a product problem, or if it's a problem with my 23 year old motorhome's electrical system. At any rate, I really like the new arms and would reccomend them to anyone looking to upgrade their awning to an automated system.

Ordered this product to replace / convert a Dometic system which, despite little use, had to be replaced twice. I was notified product was out of stock after I ordered it and it took about 1 1/2 months for it to be shipped. Once shipped however it arrived within a week to Newfoundland in eastern Canada. Packaging was somewhat fragile however appears to have arrived without any damage. Conversion kit and online instructions make it look easy. Looking forward to getting it installed so I can get some end of summer use. Overall appears to be a great product.

It works great and was easy to install.

by:

Quick shipping and packaged very well

by:

This turned out to be an upgrade from the original arms that I ruined. Your CSR was extremely helpful, the package was received in a timely manner and was undamaged. The installation was easy and the wiring fairly simple. So simple in fact that I ordered the wind sensor and the infrared sensor to go with it. Great job! Thank You.

by:

The follow up with an order to replace the one that was received by UPS/Franklin MA, was received undamaged. Thank you.

Where do I start? This kit does not include the end caps you need for a manual conversion, like from a Dometic arm. Eventhough the description and instructions say they come with the arms, the manufacturer (Lippert) packages them from a faulty picture (see above). Took three try to Lippert before I found someone in Parts to admit they made a mistake. No one had them in stock so I paid $80 for a pair on eBay. Arms work great! But I promise you, this will be the last Lippert purchase. etrailer just kept sending me to Lippert. Wow, thanks everyone! Can I do this again? Reputation defender will no doubt prevent this from being posted.

by:

Had to wait a bit to get them but it was right in the middle of the Covid hysteria. Got them in and installed in one day. The wiring was a little different but I didn’t have a problem figuring it out with the help of the excellent instructions.

by:

One of the best investments we've made in our older 5th-wheel (other than automatic levelers)!

  • Width Needed for 63 Inch Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awning Conversion Kit
In regards to mounting the 63 inch Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awning Conversion Kit, Lippert has told us the wall-mounted brackets require a minimum width of 2-1/2 inches for installation, but that at least a 3 inch width would be preferred. That is true for the width of the brackets for both colors of the conversion kit: - Black: Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awning Conversion Kit # LC759516 - White: Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awning Conversion Kit # LC759404

The # LC434724 is actually the part you're looking for in this case. The actual dimensions of the awning fabric (16ft x 91 inches) won't really matter on this since you're just replacing the arms and will then remove the torsion springs on the roller, so the # LC434724 will be the part you're looking for. This kit will allow you to replace the manual arm on your existing Dometic awning with a powered drive head.
