Video Transcript for Hopkins Breakaway Kit 12 V Battery Replacement Review

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the Hopkins replacement battery for trailer breakaway boxes. Trailer maintenance is often one of those things that just gets overlooked, you know, you don't use 'em all the time. In some cases they'll sit outside and the breakaway battery being charged and operating correctly is critical because you're gonna need this in those situations where you we're to come accidentally disconnected, you know, and what would happen is your breakaway switch would get pulled, the battery would send power back to your trailer's brakes, helping the trailer to slow down and kind of get things back under control. So, you know, a lot of times you're never gonna run into that situation, but when you do or if you do, you want everything to function properly. So like I said a lot of times this just kind of just gets overlooked.

But it's a critical part of your trailer's braking system. Our trailer today is a perfect example of that, you know, a guy bought it used sitting around for a while and a lot of the stuff wasn't working. The wiring, the brakes, a lot of components needed fixed and that's what we did. So right now we have the original battery in there and if we test it, our box has a test function here, we get no power at all, nothing lights up. We actually installed a new breakaway switch for him too which is another way to kind of test it.

So if the battery was good, when we pull this it should light up red and it's getting nothing. So we know this battery's dead. A lot of times, you know, you can try to charge 'em but sometimes you're just too far gone and that was a case with this one and that's why we are replacing it. The way you replace these, super easy, you open up your box and we'll just have a couple of wires there, power and ground. That's really all there is to it to get 'em back up and going.

And this is gonna work with a ton of the breakaway boxes out there. They're all pretty generic in terms of size and as long as your battery will fit in the box and it's the proper rating, you'll be in good shape. So this is a 12 volt battery, it's 5 amp hours and that's gonna be what the majority of the batteries are that are out there on trailers. In terms of how big this is gonna be, it's gonna be 3-1/2 inches long, 2-3/4 of an inch wide and 4 inches high. Like I said, you know, almost a perfect matchup with just about all the other batteries out there.

So this is kind of example of the old one compared to the new and these things just pop in and that's really all there is to it. So when you do get it replaced, not a bad idea just to check it and make sure everything is indeed working properly. So if we test it now, we get that green light. Really hard to see on a sunny day, but it is green. Compared to some of the other ones available this one here is a Bright Way Group battery and really not a whole lot to compare to be honest with you. They're same size, same ratings are both a non spillable lead acid type battery. So you know, you really couldn't go wrong with either one of them. Other than that, at the end of the day this will be a great way to kind of get your trailer up and going again without having to get a whole entire new breakaway box. You know, if your existing one is in good shape no reason to replace that whole thing when you can just get a new battery for it. And that'll finish up our look at of the Hopkins replacement battery for a trailer breakaway boxes.

etrailer.com Awesome, they got my trailer on the road again, Very Happy with there services & a fast response

fit perfect

Tara set up the order for me and had it in the mail that afternoon. It arrived a day ahead of time no problems. It was fully charged right out of the box. It fit right into the charging system box just as Tara said it would. The brakes on my Worthing double axel motorcycle trailer engaged and held till l reconnected to runaway cable. I had been trying to locate a TAP replacement battery and was informed by Tara that TAP had been bought out by Hopkins and this was the same battery with their name on it.

No problems with this battery or keeping it charred. If I do not use the trailer for a time I keep an eye on the charge light if it goes from green to yellow I just plug the trailer into my truck connector and let it charge for an hour or when it returns to green it’s good to go!!

by:

Perfect replacement of my original battery. Exact same size as original battery, allowing the battery to fit in the plastic receptacle box that protects the battery and charger and mounts to the trailer.

E-Trailer is GREAT. The products I purchased a year ago continue to work perfectly. I will remain a loyal customer always!

Fast and accurate

by:

Exact replacement for my trailer breakaway emergency brake. Wanted a battery designed for transportation instead of a cheap UPS battery. eTrailer always has great service and web documentation so you can't go wrong.

by:

Just shows it pays to purchase from the OEM distributor. This batttery was the exact replacement and fit perfectly in the housing. I had looked at some cheaper replacement models, but they were just a bit larger, and would have required modification to fit. Using the proper size required little effort on my part, and the process was completed in less than 5 minutes.

Still working perfect after a year....including setting with no use during a Michigan winter!!

by:

this battery was just what I needed to replace one that was many years old . It has the ability of stopping a runaway trailer by applying the brakes . with out it the trailer would travel on down the road ,,,,,,,
This is a first class battery ,,,,,,I contacted several options from the manufacturer to other listings
these folks are the ones to deal with !!!!
don't buy from any one else !!!!

by:

Seems to be a great battery and fits right in the battery box of my haulmark motorcycle trailer. The hitch and coupler locks are great. They too fit perfectly and so much easier they are keyed the same. Exremely fast shipping and great communication by email from etrailer. I ordered another part from another company two days before ordering the battery from etrailer. It's still not here. I highly recommend etrailer. I will not get any trailer parts or accessories anywhere else from now on.

by:

I needed a new 12 volt battery for my utility trailer break-away brake. I found what appeared to be a direct replacement on etrailer.com based on the good description and high resolution picture on the website. I placed the order and the battery appeared two days later. The battery was exactly what I needed. The quality was good and the size was as advertised. The terminals were the right size and in the right places. Based on service like this, etrailer is the first place I look for my trailer and towing needs.

by:

Exact fit for the TAP battery #20008 trailer brake-away emergency braking system. The battery box is made to ONLY fit this size battery! It also came fully charged and we put the trailer on the road the day I received it.
Thanks for a quick delivery and perfect fit!!

by:

Item arrived already at peak charge and ready to install. This name brand battery was more money than other's but I didn't want to risk a breakaway with a battery I've never heard of. I paid allot for quick delivery but that's the way it goes. I needed it asap and it was received on time. So overall a good purchase.

by:

Replacement battery for emergency/breakaway brake on car trailer... works well.

by:

Good internet description on etrailer.com and an exact fit matching specifications of the battery being replaced. Good price, prompt shipment, and well packaged...what more could you ask for.

by:

Perfect replacement of my original battery. Exact same size as original battery, allowing the battery to fit in the plastic receptacle box that protects the battery and charger and mounts to the trailer.

by:

I was delighted with the arrival of the break-away battery. It was exactly as described and was charged and ready for use. My greatest appreciation goes to etrailer for the rapid response and arrival of the battery. I requested standard shipping. etrailer offered, without additional charge, priority shipping getting the battery to me within two days. WOW!!!

by:

I recently ordered a replacement battery for my deck over trailer. The order was placed and the battery was shipped immediately and received in excellent packing and condition. I would recommend etrailer to anyone. Thank you, Denny

by:

Not using this battery as a breakaway power source; using it as a battery to start a 50cc scooter! works great! A lot less money than buying a OE part!

by:

So happy to find the exact battery I needed that fit the trailer braking system. I was worried that it would be hard to find the funky size for this older system. Came right away, too. Thank you.

by:

I had a difficult time resourcing a 12 V Battery, for my trailers brake-a-way system locally.
I had previosuly ordered from etrailer, and was very pleased with thier service, and care to communicate the leadtime for delivery.
Great customer service!

by:

Haven't installed it yet but arrived right on time and is exactly as described. I have ordered a number of things from etrailer over the years and always am very happy. Their website with all of the reviews, videos, install instructions etc is really great. Keep up the good work guys.

by:

Direct replacement for my Triton Prestige brake-away system. Second purchase I made from etrailer in the past year. Great prices and reasonable shipping costs.

by:

Great Service and really fast shipping!
perfect
replacement.

Still doing the job it is supposed too!

by:

It had enough of a charge to do a breakaway test so that the loaded trailer, connected to a truck and ready to go would pass all safety checks. :)

  • The Charge Light for Engager Trailer BreakAway Kit Stays On All the Time
The fact that it is staying on even when the trailer is not connected is strange. According to the installation details linked for reference, if the trailer is connected to the tow vehicle, the yellow charging light will always be on. The light stays on just to show that the unit is connected and has power. Since it is staying on, it has to be drawing power from the break away battery. The box is water resistant but not water proof. Moisture or corrosion build up in the box or wiring could...

When installing the Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac I and II Trailer Breakaway Kits # C52025 the red wire that has the spade terminal pre-crimped on it will be the only thing on the battery positive post. If you have an old wire on there you can remove it. I have attached an installation and review video for your reference which shows all of the steps and where each wire goes.

  • Shore Power Battery Charging For Brake System & Accessories
You'll need to run the wires from the charger directly to your battery # HM20008. If it were my trailer, I would get a charger like this # BRW54FR because it's FREE energy!! This one is a trickle charger putting out about 7.5 watts which is good for any battery with 5 amp hours or more. It can go on the side of the trailer where your battery is so the wiring won't go from one end of the trailer to the next. It's also pretty low profile so it's not an eye sore. That being said, you should...

  • Best Way To Charge A Breakaway Battery and a Winch Battery
Using the breakaway battery charger to charge another battery on the trailer is not recommended. The larger battery you are using to operate the trailer winch would take an extremely long time to charge with a breakaway charger and would likely never charge fully with the limited amount of time the trailer is connected to the vehicle, even if towing long distances. The breakaway battery may not be charged sufficiently in this situation either. The best bet for charging the winch battery...

  • Can Trailer Breakaway Battery be Replaced if Battery is Dead
You can replace just the breakaway battery if it is dead, with the following: - Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery # HM20008 This battery measures 3-1/2" long x 2-3/4" wide x 4" tall, so you'll want to be sure it fits your battery box. Also, regarding the trailer wiring fault, it is either the 7-way or the wiring to the brakes. I would first check your 7-way (both on your truck and trailer) for corrosion as that can impede the signal, and if those are okay, check the wires leading...

The box is water resistant but not water proof. Moisture or corrosion build up in the box or wiring could cause a short circuit leading power to go to the light. There are so many factors that can be attributed to battery life that a hard number of years for the life span of a Breakaway Battery like # HM20008 is nearly impossible to determine. In cold weather climates like in the northern United States, the cold will take its toll on the battery and it will not last as long. The same is true for hot climates such as in the Southwestern United States. And there are also marine areas, and/or areas that see a lot of rain. In addition to weather there...

The battery that you use for a break away system needs to be able to power the trailer brakes on full for 15 minutes. It is entirely possible that a breakaway battery that has sat for 3 years including winters could now be bad. A local auto parts store might be able to test it to see if the battery is bad or not. But If it were me I would just replace the battery with a new one that you know isn't going to have any issues. If your existing battery is 3-1/2 inches by 2-3/4 inches by 4 inches then you can use # HM20008. As a matter of fact, all of the breakaway batteries we have are this size, see link.

  • Is Isolator Needed When Installing Battery On Trailer And Connecting To Tow Vehicle Wiring
A diode or isolator is not necessary if you are installing a battery on your trailer in the same manner as was recommended on the earlier question. There would not be enough power flowing back to the towing vehicle that would cause damage. The battery charger I recommend is the NOCO Genius Mini # 329-GENIUS5 when you are near shore power. This has pulse maintenance to keep the battery charged so that it is ready to go when you are.

First I recommend you carefully check the condition of the vehicle and trailer connectors. There could be an internal corrosion issue that is causing adjacent circuits to short. Also check the condition of the dome light's wiring and bulb socket. A trailer dome light will typically be powered either by a separate trailer-mounted battery or by the...

With a flat/dead battery the trailer brakes should not default to braking but the exact opposite. When a trailer breakaway battery is flat/dead then there should be no difference in braking function at all. The trailer brakes should work as designed on the trailer, the only issue would be if your trailer where to disconnect the pin of your breakaway system would get pulled and no power would be applied to the brakes. Basically you'd have no brakes on a runaway trailer versus having that...
