Use this actuator to synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow-vehicle brakes. Over-center latch mechanism only engages when the actuator is fully seated on 2" hitch ball. Designed for hydraulic disc brakes and 3x3 or 3x4 straight tongue.

Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stops
  • Low-profile coupler latch ensures easy, secure connection
    • Over-center latch mechanism only engages when the actuator is fully seated on hitch ball
  • Aluminum master cylinder is better at reducing corrosion than cast steel master cylinders
  • Primed finish
  • Weld-on installation
  • Manual lockout kit sold separately
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: hydraulic disc brakes
  • Ball size: 2"
  • Mounting: 3" x 3" or 3" x 4" straight tongue
  • Capacity: 7,500 lbs
  • 2-Year limited warranty

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DX73FR

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the Dexter DX, 7.5L weld-on drum brake actuator for a two-inch hitch ball has a 7,500-pound weight capacity. Now, you'll use this actuator to synchronize your trailer's drum brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. This hydraulic actuator activates your trailer brakes when the tow vehicle slows or stops.Basically, what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear view vehicle. So, with the surge brake system, this actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows.

What happens is this inner slide tube right here of the actuator will telescope in, and applies force to the master cylinder back here, which internal supply, the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. If you notice on this actuator, it's a nice low-profile coupler latch ensures easy, secure connection. There's no latch sticking up that it could get dented or damaged or bent. This has a nice low-profile look to it, and it is an over center latch mechanism. It will only engage when the actuator is fully seated on your two inch hitch ball. Now, I do want to show you, I happened to pull here's an example of a two inch hitch ball, it fits on.

Just to show you how this coupler will work, you can see what you want to do first. Let's go ahead and open it up. First; what you'll do is it has this tethered safety pin right here. You just pull that safety pin out and that'll release it, and then what you'll do is this latch. You can see this little rounded portion up top here, that slides back and forth.Just push that and it'll let you to release it, and it lifts latch up.

Now you're ready to install onto the hitch ball. If I lift that up, we put our hitch ball there. You can say that it'll drop right onto the two inch hitch ball, push that closed, and then it's locked on there. And then for added safety, you take this tethered safety pin, slide it all the way through there and that'll hold that into place. So it doesn't come off the ball.

Even if by chance something would let push this lever and Le and release it. It still doesn't come up enough to release it from the ball. You do have to take the pin fully out, then raise the latch all the way up, and then it allow you to release it from the ball. Very nice connection. Disconnection of the pitch ball. inaudible 00:02:26 We'll go ahead and put our pin back through there. Now, if you notice it does include this breakaway cable. This cable right here is required by law. And what this does is it prevents a trailer runaway situation. This hook right here, you'll run this to your tow vehicle, hook it to your tow vehicle. And then what happens if by chance, this comes disconnected from your tow vehicle. It will pull on this cable, which will then activate the master cylinder back here, and that'll put the, apply the brakes to a runaway situation. So the idea of the breakaway cable is to keep the trailer from a runaway situation. Also, I wanted to show you if I flip this upside down, you might be able to see the end of the master cylinder right here. The master cylinder is constructed of aluminum rather than plastic or steel gives you increased strength in corrosion resistance, and also at the very top, flip it back over. You'll notice here's the flush brake fluid filler cap on top. And again, it's flushed, so it doesn't stick up. So there's no chance of anything hitting it and breaking it or damaging it. So all you have to do is unscrew that to check your brake fluid level and to add brake fluid to your master cylinder. If you noticed this has a nice prime finish to it. Now this is a weld on installation. It is designed to fit 3-inch by 3-inch or 3-inch by 4-inch straight trailer tongues, as part is made in the USA few specs again, application is for hydraulic drum brakes. The ball size it fits on is a two inch diameter hitch ball. Weight capacity is 7,500 pounds. The last thing I do want to mention on this. Now, this actuator does not include a reverse lockout. It is recommended that you equip the trailer with either an electric reverse lockout solenoid. What that does is it screws into the back of the master cylinder wires into your reverse light circuit. So when you put your vehicle in reverse, it'll automatically turn off the., doesn't allow the brake pressure that will apply to your brakes. The other way is you can install free backing brakes on, right free backing brakes on your trailer that way you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer brakes off. That should do it for the review on this Dexter DX 7.5 L weld-on drum brake actuator for two inch hitch ball has a 7,500 pound weight capacity..

Amazing price for my favorite hitch, tongue actuator system made. I own 6 trailers and have had another dozen in the past. There is no better looking or functioning system .

The hitch I purchased a year ago works perfectly and is always a pleasure to use compared to other brands. I have this same model on 3 trailers total and don’t want to have a trailer with any other type of actuator. It is easy to connect, brake lock out works well and is sleek and attractive.

Works fantasticly
Glad I changed it.
Etrailer is the best.

Delivery was very fast. Quality seems very good. Installation was super easy since my Shorelander swing tongue trailer has this standard hole pattern. I love how it looks and the extra foot of distance I get between the boat and my tow vehicle (so less chance of needing to get my feet wet or crawl through the SUV).

Finished drum to disc brake conversion on my 1993 year model Bass Cat trailer. Installation went smoothly and the UFP-A60 Actuator replaced the obsolete Atwood Actuator. Shortened the outer member a bit and added a 1" flat bar to the bottom for welding of 4" channel trailer frame.

Pros.

Works great really noticed
the difference right away.

Ed W. with etrailer was great to work with helped determine which one to get.

It was a fairly simple install.

Con.

The reverse lockout was further away than my original, just a little, so my brake line was too short.

Auto parts places didn't have a flex that fit the thread. I was doing this on a Sunday so I had to drive across town to a trailer guy who was open for a flex line.

I would give it 4.7 stars if I could would of gave a 5 star had they included a short flex line with the kit.

It's about a 2 hour job with everything you need I spent an extra 2+hours getting a part.

All in all been using for a year and I am completely satisfied.

Shipping was quick and it was packaged nicely. Exact fit for my 2013 single axel Karavan trailer.

Updating my old surge brake coupler, I really like this Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout - Bolt On - Disc - 2" Ball - Zinc - 7.5K fits 3”x4”trailer tongue, it was easy to install, I did have to drill new holes, I just wish the manufacturer would have included the bolts and the information on how much to torque the bolts to, it’s about “2 drop from my old coupler. etrailer was super fast with shipping !

by:

Exactly what I needed. Didn't require the outer housing, the insider mechanism slid in nicely as a replacement on my trailer. The etrailer videos for installation and bleeding were very helpful.

by:

Just what I wanted. I am building a custom trailer for my vintage boat. I have used these actuators in past projects. etrailer has great pricing and fast delivery every time.

by:

Have not use the Actuator yet. However it came in a oversize box. No packing material to protect it. It was damaged when I opened the box. Scratches and damage cable

by:

Fit was seemless to replace an old actuator with the impossible do get landed hitch latch. Changed brakes from drum to disk, and all new lines. What a difference in smoothness (and effectiveness) while braking. Electric lockout in reverse is also a nice feature. Just plusses all around. If you are replacing the same components be very patient with the bleeding process...it will take some time and a lot of pumping.

by:

The product is as expected and an exact replacement for my trailer. The exceptional part of the transaction was the speed my order was filled and shipped.

by:

I have not got it on the trailer yet can't wait to use it it looks awesome hope it works as good as it looks

by:

I’m very satisfied. I always check out etrailer for all my trailer needs and this time was no different. In under 2 hours by myself I changed out the old with the new ( pictures) and ready to bleed the brakes. I always let people know to contact etrailer with there needs. Thanks

by:

Fantastic product selection excellent customer service

by:

Product arrived quickly (as always, thanks etrailer!) bolted direct to my shorelandr trailer without issue. it did not come with the reservoir cover or the manual lockout which was expected given it was a full tongue assembly. Also did not come with the manual (and specifically the spare breakaway clips in case the emergency cord is pulled). Save old lockout and reservoir cap if replacing a busted tongue!

by:

Ordered brake actuator from Etrailer after several attempts from EZTrailee with no response. Wished I had checked out Etrailer sooner. Received notification at each billing, shipping.
It was easy to find the parts got fast shipping with working brakes now, can enjoy the boat again. This is the third trailer you helped me repair with correct parts, fast shipping
Many thanks guys

by:

I slipped this into my boat mate trailer for 2001 moomba. Took about an hour to hook up and bleed the system with a buddy. Works great! If you can use simple tools and are mechanically savvy this is a no brainer.

by:

Perfect fit. I had to notch one corner where my wiring came out of the box tubing. Really nice compared to the original that was on there

by:

This was an easy replacement and has worked very well

by:

Great replacement for a damaged actuator. A plan came together and it don't get much better.

by:

works perfectly

  • Replacement Surge Brake Coupler For a EZ Loader Boat Trailer With Disc Brakes and Obsolete A-50 Coup
Thank you for the pictures of your coupler. You are going to need to replace your entire surge actuator coupler as the A-50 is obsolete and we do not have any parts to repair it. We have the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX73FR which you can have welded in place of your current actuator. Or we do have the Dexter DX7.5L A-60XL Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX43FR which would be a better option since it will prevent the brakes from being activated when you drive in reverse. • Difference Between Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuators
Hi Bill, So the difference between the two DX7.5L A-60 brake actuators is just that one is for trailers with disc brakes and the other is for trailers with drum brakes: - Drum Brakes: Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX53FR - Disc Brakes: Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX73FR So you'll just want the one that is for the type of brakes you have on your boat trailer. Disc brakes require more psi from the master cylinder in the actuator than drum brakes, so that's what the internal...
