Video Transcript for Review of CURT Electrical Tools - 7-Way LED Circuit Tester - C73NR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt 7-Way to RV Socket LED Circuit Tester. Now this 7-way connector tester is going to plug into your vehicle's wiring harness to confirm your lights are functioning properly. You can see we do have a color-coded and labeled set of LEDs here that are going to make it very easy to distinguish your vehicle's signals. So, if we work from the bottom here, you can see we've got our TM for our tail lights.

We've got our LT for our left turn signal and our RT for our right turn signal. Those will both light up for our brakes, so we can check our brakes. We've got the BU for our backup, BK for our electric brakes, and then our 12V for our auxiliary power. So this will be very easy to operate. Just plug it right in, apply your turn signals, brakes, electric brakes, that sort of thing.

It will light up to indicate that it's functioning properly. We can loosen this screw on the backside that will allow us to twist that LED head so that we can get that lined up in whatever orientation is gonna be easiest for us to view as we are testing those out. So we'll just take a little bit of backing out of that screw there, and then we can twist the head to whichever orientation is gonna be easiest for us to see, and then tighten it back down so it always be able to make sure that we have a very easy time just to plug this in and then operate those signals, make sure that they're working properly. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com.

Thanks for watching.

This has been a reliable and useful product thus far. I use it every time before I tow. One time I had a blown fuse in the tow vehicle for the trailer lights and caught it before I made the trip to pick up my trailer at an offsite location.

by:

This tester is a must When troubleshooting trailer electrical problems. Just plug it into the 7 way socket and get the big picture of your harness output circuit condition. Quickly and easily verify the performance of your tow/running lights, brake tights and hazard lights. Must have tester for all Rv and trailer owners!

by:

Identified the electrical issue with the wiring.

by:

I had an electrical issue with my 5th wheel connector and needed to troubleshoot it. I immediately thought of etrailer and had the tool delivered to my campsite. Problem solved.

by:

It works, but I really haven't had a need for it.

by:

Arrived on time and in good condition. Seems to be good quality. Have not used it yet.

by:

After struggling with erratic trailer lights checking ground connection, light bulbs and possible shorts, I finally decided to check my truck connection. The curt 7-way tester revealed my trailer circuit breaker to the running lights was blown. Replaced it and problem solved. Took less than 5 minutes with the curt 7-way tester to reveal my problem. If I had already purchased this tester before checking out my trailer it would have saved me the 2 hours I spent diagnosing the trailer first. Outstanding product and a big thank you to etrailer for carrying this product. Plus the video provided by etrailer on their website does a great job explaining how to use the device.

by:

Swift and smooth experience

by:

Just what I needed to figure out why our lights weren't functioning properly! Worked perfectly.

by:

The product arrived on time. Work's like it should.

  • No Power to the 12 Volt Pin on a 7-way Trailer Plug on a 2001 Ford F-250 7.3L Powerstroke
I looked up your owner's manual online and the 12V power issue is likely a fuse issue. You will want to check the 30amp fuse number 16. This will be in the power distribution box under the hood.

  • 7-Way Tester Recommendation for 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500
The 7-way tester part # C73NR would work on your 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 for all circuits unless you have an integrated brake controller. That's pretty much the only circuit we have found that doesn't like to work with this tester on the newer Chevy trucks.

  • Trailer Connector has 4 Pins But 5 Wires: What are the Functions of the Wires
Your wiring harness is what is called a wishbone harness. The white wire is the ground and is attached to the only covered pin out of the 4 on a trailer side 4-Way. The 2 brown wires are running lights; one for each side of the trailer. The yellow wire is left turn signal and brake lights. The blue wire, which is normally green, is the right turn signal and brake light wire.

  • My Camper Battery Does Not Hold A Charge
I am assuming the battery is in working order. If your are not sure, I would check the battery. If you have a battery tester, I would charge the battery and leave it overnight and see if it has a charge in the morning. If it does not, I would start with replacing the battery. If the battery holds a charge, I would move on to checking the 7-Way trailer connector. If you are using a 7-Way trailer connector you want to check and see if the 12V pin is hot when the truck key is in the ignition....

  • Can Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector and Tester # HM48503 be Used as Just a Tester
Technically, yes, but Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector and Tester # HM48503 is meant to work as a trailer connector and tester. If you only need a tester to check a vehicle side connector then # C73NR would be the way to go. Since # HM48503 is open at the back I do not recommend using it as just a tester since moisture and other crud could get inside and cause it not to work properly.

  • 2007 Toyota Tundra 12V Trailer Wiring Circuit Not Active
There will be a fuse and/or relay associated with the 12 volt accessory circuit of the 7-way on your 2007 Toyota Tundra. Check under the hood of the truck for that circuit and replace as needed. Your other option is to run a 10 gauge wire from the 1:00 position of the 7:way all the way up to the positive side of the battery. You would need part # 10-1-1 for 10 gauge wire (sold by the foot), and then a circuit breaker to install on this circuit like part # 9510 as well.

  • Troubleshooting Constant Power on Drivers Side Tail Light of Trailer Connector
It sounds like you have a crossed wire after the fuse panel. Sometimes this happens inside the trailer connector, so I recommend removing your trailer connector and using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test each of the wire functions at the US Car Connection locations like you see on this harness # 20147. If this connection works correctly then you will want to replace the 7-way connector on your vehicle because it has an internal issue. If this is the case, I recommend the Hopkins...

  • Replacement 7-Way Trailer Connector For 2001 Ram Pickup
Typically the center pin of the 7-way carries the reverse lamp signal, but you could swap the wires on the connector to change the center pin to a different function if you wish. However, rather than rewiring the trailer connector on the vehicle, it's best to rewire the trailer so its connector is wired conventionally as shown the the trailer wiring help article I've linked for you. If your 2001 Ram has the factory tow package and you're just wanting to replace that factory 7-way for a...

I would first encourage you to test the 7 way connection on your 2012 Lexus RX 450h and make sure that the issues aren't stemming from some sort of damaged wiring/connection. We don't have any confirmation that the Tekonsha Prodigy RF will or will not work on your vehicle, but it could be something simple that is keeping you from using it. You'll want to make sure that all of the circuits are functioning correctly; you can use a circuit tester like the # PTW2992 to verify that each circuit...

  • Troubleshooting 12V Power Circuit on 2011 Ford F-350 7-Way
The first thing to check on your 2011 F-350 that does not have 12V power on the 7-way is the 30-amp trailer tow battery charge fuse in position 21 in the power distribution box under the hood. If you wish you can refer to page 335 of the manual. If you still do not have power at the 1:00 pin on the 7-way (see photo please) after replacing the fuse you can trace the wire for this circuit starting at the 7-way and running forward. If you have a circuit tester like # PTW2992 you can probe...

If you already installed a 4-way trailer wiring harness like the part # C56225 which comes with all of the needed relays and harnesses then to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install and use the brake controller you would need to use the part # 118267 as this will replace the 4-way and give you a 7-way that is functional. This would work well with your Prodigy P2 part # 90885 and install harness part # 3050-P.

As long as you have the basic lighting functions and the 12V power activate on the 7-Way connector of your 2005 Porsche Cayenne then the Curt Echo # C51180 will work just fine. Vehicles with certain late model European tow packages may require the use of a tester # C73NR or another truck or SUV to pair the receiver and transmitter. No. You wouldn't need to install an extra circuit breaker from the # ETBC7 or # ETBC7L for a Tekonsha Prodigy RF # TK94FR since it will be drawing power from the 12v power circuit on your 7 way, which is already protected by a circuit breaker.

The emulator that you mentioned # C73NR works only with some controllers. Sometimes, the LED lights on the emulators don't have enough draw to fully trigger the brake controller. Once a trailer has been connected, and the info screen indicates the trailer is connected, the truck will then send 12V to the 7-way. The brake output circuit is not going to be active unless you have a brake controller installed. Since you didn't mention a brake controller but tested fuses and relays I would assume you don't have one. You need a brake controller to apply voltage to the brakes as the amount of voltage that the brakes receive dictates how hard they grab.
