Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings, rear scuff panel, side trim panels, and tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Everything was intact. Looked up the video instructions and they were very clear and easy to follow. Haven't had a chance to do the installation yet. Plan to soon.

2014 Ford Escape

Easy installation

by:

Plug and play plugged right into existing wiring harness works great

by:

Came a day early .It will be a while until I get it installed. Have both pieces and excellent rating for quality. Should be a good fit , will let you know when complete.

by:

Product installed easily. Only recommendation is to let users know in instructions that power can be obtained from the rear fuse panel with a spade connection. No need to run wire all the way to the battery for power.

2013 Ford Escape

Worked great for a month or 2 then I lost my brake lights and blinkers. All I'm left with are my running lights and sometimes even those don't work. I've looked at my ground and all of my connections and they're all completely fine. And I would go through fuses like crazy. I was changing the fuse almost every time I hooked up to a trailer

I wanted to see if I could help trouble shoot and I have a few questions that I wanted to ask. When the harness was installed did you run the power wire to the battery? Have you tested the 4 way with a circuit tester to see if the signals are reaching the 4 way? Please see the FAQ that we have below. It is very helpful in helping to identify the issue or determine if a new harness is needed.

This Hitch is great was a breeze to install with some help from a good friend and there are no complaints here fits just a specified with no issues
I have had this for a year On My 2013 Ford Escape
Use it for taking trash to the Dump, as well as got a nice 5X8 Trailer for hauling my tractor and motorcycles and other things.....Not disappointed

by:

It died after 1 year and now all I see is lights on all the time even when the car lights are off.

The harness may still be able to be saved. It sounds like that the harness may have a grounding issue or it may have been overloaded. Both are testable and possibly can be fixed. Please see the FAQ below and take a look at method 3 and method 5 for testing the harness.

The wiring still working great and no problems yet. East to hook up and the instructions was very understandable. Very good product after a year!

2003 Jeep Wrangler

I put this in my 2003 Jeep Wrangler along with Break Buddy Stealth. This harness connected in perfectly. The flat tow system is working great one year and ~10k miles latter. etrailer is always best support, pick up the phone and they guide you though buying the right product and installing it.

by:

It's worked out great with no issues.

by:

I like it, I'm glad I bought it. My son and I put it on in about 45 minutes and I put the wiring harness on in about half an hour. I've used it only once so far; it works well. I would buy it again and would recommend it to others.

I like it. Its reliable.

by:

Although everything works great and the kit is complete, I was disappointed to see that The connectors for my 2013 escape were outside of the car. I determined the installation would be more waterproof by cutting off the connectors and splicing the traditional way with tap splices behind panels in the trunk.

Otherwise you have to make huge cuts in rubber gaskets to pass the connectors through to behind the tail lights, I didn't want to take a chance of water entering the cabin.

Thus, I would recommend a universal kit for any modern Ford escape.

by:

We backed out of installing this unit after reading the troubleshooting guide. Weren’t comfortable with the possibility of a malfunction in the control box damaging the Escape’s circuitry or driving without functioning tail lights and not knowing it. We’ve installed plenty of hardwired harnesses without this concern.

by:

Perfect, great instructions

by:
2014 Ford Escape

Took several hours to install, not because of the kit itself necessarily, it snapped in fairly easy. Problems were due to vehicle itself and difficulty accessing areas necessary behind panels and taillights. Installed the power lead wire going through the interior of the vehicle, just didn't feel comfortable with it going down the underside at all. Had to google recommendations for that since it was not covered at all in the directions. Speaking of, directions could be a little clearer, and small dark printed photos don't help as much as they should. Would also recommend you get your own butt connectors with built in shrink wrap for a few dollars more. May just be personal preference, but have never liked those cheap ones that come with kits like this.

by:

As with all custom wiring harnesses from etrailer, this one worked immediately. It was used to replace a similar/older one that had been damaged in a rear-end collision, unfortunately. Everything works as it should, and the Customer Service from etrailer is always the best.

by:
2014 Ford Escape

First, I will say the service was great. I had a problem with a wire that came off, and was able to speak to a tech, and he sent me a new one. This probably would not have happened if the product were designed better for my 2014 Ford Escape. You have to put a large object through a very narrow passage under the tail lights. I changed the design by installing my own wires leading from the tail lights down to the bumper area, so all you have to do is fish these wires through, and re-attach. Much simpler and cleaner than the original. Just had to splice a few wires.

by:

Good product but there isn’t the sufficient length of wiring to complete a normal installation. Had to go to [auto store] and buy additional wire to add the proper length needed.

You have to install the wiring harness exactly where the directions say to put the wires or there will not be enough. It shouldnt be loose around moving parts.

by:
2013 Ford Escape

I have not installed this yet but I did open the package to review the installation it appears to be very easy to install one thing I did not realize is you have to run a wire from the back of your car to the battery compartment to power up the lights for the trailer which makes sense so you don’t blow the fuse for your cars brake lights if a problem occurs on the trailer

Wiring Harness, the 'Curt' Hitch and Brake Module mounted and Worked Perfectly on my 2014 Ford Escape ,,, Shipping was Fast and Complete. Thank You, Ken H.

2016 Ford Escape

I don't usually work on cars. I installed this in my 2016 Ford Escape in my garage with no help except the video and 1 jack stand. It took me 3 1/2 hours. Everything fit like it should, all the parts were there. Fishing the power wire to the battery took most of the time. The guy in the video could stand under the car! I would rate this kit excellent.

by:

Wiring harness worked flawlessly from the getgo. Nearly broke my fingers pushing the plugs through the rubber grommets!

by:

Shipped right away. The instructions were clear and installed without issue.

by:
2014 Ford Escape

This wiring harness for my Escape is just what I needed. The factory wiring quit working so I replaced it with the S56335 harness. It cost much less than the Ford replacement parts, and works as well or better than the factory equipment. The installation instructions that came with it made it very easy to install. I definitely recommend this Curt wiring harness.

  • Installing a Brake Controller in a 2014 Ford Escape
To install the Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller part # 39510 in your 2014 Ford Escape you will need to splice into the cold side of the brake switch with the red wire of the controller. I attached a video that shows a brake controller being installed on a very similar Ford Escape as your 2014 model. In case you aren't sure what parts you would need you also would need a 4-way to start. For that you would want the # C56335. Now to convert that to a 7-way and install the brake controller...

  • Could Amp Wiring be Used to Power Trailer Wiring for 2016 Ford Escape
Technically yes you could use the amp wire you have now to power the Curt trailer wiring connector part # C56335 for your 2016 Ford Escape. That said if your amp is being pushed really hard and at the amperage draw limit of your 4 gauge wiring your trailer lights might stop working. Most likely you'd see them fade in and out. If your wiring is way overkill for your amp like most are you'd never run into this problem. Be sure to run the included inline fuse on the wiring before it gets...

  • Why Does Curt 4-Way Kit part # C56335 Store In Interior of Vehicle
Having the 4-way run out of the back hatch is actually the preferred method although it seems like it wouldn't be. Having the 4-way stored inside the cab of the vehicle keeps it protected from rain and moisture to prevent corrosion and keeps it protected from damage to the wiring or connector by rocks or debris that might be on the highway. You can run the wire through the vehicle if you wish but just keep in mind that this does take more time and you may end up needing additional wire...

The Draw-Tite part # 75758 will fit both the 2013 and 2014 models so I would recommend it for you. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. If you've already checked all of your connections and found them to be in proper working order then you'll want to check the control module like what you said. • Are Tail Light Connectors Only Available By Themselves for Trailer Wiring on a 2013 Ford Escape
The connectors from any trailer wiring harness are not available by themselves. You could buy the harness and cut them off but if you were to buy it you might as well install that one and return the hardwire harness to the dealer. Or I could help you install the hardwire harness. It is actually pretty easy. You just need a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the vehicle tail light wiring. On the driver side you will need to find the left turn signal wire and the running light wire....
