Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Breakaway Kit C52025 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a replacement charger for the Curt Soft-Trac one and two trailer breakaway kits. This replaces the charger that came with your trailer breakaway kit. It works with the Curt Soft-Trac and Soft-Trac two breakaway kits, part number C52040 and C52028. This can be added to a trailer breakaway kit that did not originally come with a battery charger, and it hard wires to your vehicle's power source into the battery in your breakaway kit. It's a really nice design. It has a couple little mounting tabs right here so it can be mounted permanently for a more secure mount.

It's a three-wire design, so the red wire is for the breakaway battery. The blue wire is for the breakaway switch, and then the black wire is for 12-volt power. That's going to do it for today's look at the replacement charger for Curt Soft-Trac one and two trailer breakaway kits.

  • Recommended Battery Charger For Trailer Breakaway Battery
You do need to keep the breakaway switch battery on your trailer tongue charged, but you will not want to charge it with your Progressive Dynamics charger. Instead you will want to use the Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac I and II Trailer Breakaway Kits # C52025 which will get wired into your 7-way connector and charge your breakaway battery when the trailer is connected to your tow vehicle. You will wire the red wire to your breakaway battery, the black wire to the 12v power wire...

  • How Does the Curt Breakaway Battery Charger C52025 Work
The Curt Breakaway Battery Charger part # C52025 only charges the breakaway battery while the trailer is plugged into the vehicle and the vehicle's battery charge line circuit is active (it could be constant on or keyed with the ignition). Once the trailer is connected and the circuit is active, the charger will provide a trickle charge to the breakaway battery. There is a shutoff feature built-in to prevent overcharging. The breakaway battery should not have to be hooked up for the charger...

  • Where Does the Red Wire Attach When Installing Curt Replacement Charger for Trailer Breakaway Kits
When installing the Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac I and II Trailer Breakaway Kits # C52025 the red wire that has the spade terminal pre-crimped on it will be the only thing on the battery positive post. If you have an old wire on there you can remove it. I have attached an installation and review video for your reference which shows all of the steps and where each wire goes.

  • My Breakaway Switch Reads 7.6V Does That Mean It Is Defective?
Yes, you should be receiving 12v with your Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac I and II Trailer Breakaway Kits # C52025 installed. A voltage reading of 7.6V is a definite indicator that there is something causing a power drop somewhere in your wiring. The usual culprit is a corroded or broken wire somewhere along your wiring. I recommend tracing the blue wire and inspect it for any breaks, frays, or pinches. Additionally, there may also be a possibility that the circuit board part...

  • Can Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac # C52025 Work without Blue Wire Connected
Yes, the Replacement Charger for Curt Soft Trac # C52025 that you referenced will still charge without the blue wire connected to anything.

  • Wiring Instructions for the Curt Soft Trac Charger
You are correct that the Red wire from the Charger for Curt Soft Trac I and II Trailer Breakaway Kits # C52025 is connected to the Battery, the White is connected to Ground, the Blue is connected to the Breakaway Switch. The Black wire that you are asking about will be spliced into the 12V Power wire on your trailer. This should be the wire connected to the pin in the 11 O'clock position on your trailer's 7-Way connector (see attached picture). You can test this out by connecting your trailer...
