2020 Kia Optima

Installation of the Curt trailer hitch receiver for my 2020 Kia Optima SX was very similar to the video shown on etrailer.com for the 2018 Optima. The main difference was the dual exhaust on my model. I elected to remove the exhaust hanger brackets from the frame verses pushing the rubber off the hangers. I had some difficulty reinstalling the exhaust brackets to the frame as they were binding against the hitch surfaces even after several attempts to adjust hitch frame and exhaust hangers. I removed some material from the metal brackets of the exhaust hangers by grinding and they seated properly, (see arrows in photo). I’m no spring chicken so the installation took me about 4 hours, excluding beer breaks, and I was working off the ground. I didn’t have to remove or trim the underbody panel or trim the muffler heat shields for this Curt hitch installation, (see photo). The most time consuming part of the job was filing the frame holes for spacer block/carriage bolt installation into the frame. I am very happy with the look and basic installation ease of this hitch. Thank you etrailer and Curt!

Its been over 1.5 years since installation of the Curt C11402 trailer hitch on my 2020 Kia Optima SX and all is well. Ive only utilized it a couple of times to haul my small pop-up camper but it functions perfectly. I would post a picture of the finished hitchcamper configuration but there isnt a provision to do so in this follow-up review. If you look in the Curt Easy Mount Bracket for 4- or 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector - 1-14 Hitch Item # C58002, it is shown there.

@DaveA We're glad your # C11402 Curt receiver hitch is working well for you!

by:

The installation was straightforward, most especially because of the excellent installation guide/materials, which eliminated any guesswork or uncertainty.
I’ve had a bike rack mounted on this hitch for most of the past year, and regularly hauled one or two mountain bikes on it. Ground clearance can be a bit of an issue, but that has much more to do with the hitch being installed on a Hyundai Sonata and much less to do with any issue of the hitch itself. Obviously hitches on sedans will naturally have significant limitations.
All told this hitch has performed as expected without any issues so far. The bolts have stayed tight and I haven’t had to perform any maintenance or adjustment to the assembly since installation.

Excellent quality trailer hitch receiver!!! I'm glad I purchased everything from here for both my vehicles!!! It's only to pull a small mc trailer but absolutely no issues and no complaints from me!!!

2016 Hyundai Sonata

Just got done installing on our 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited. Looks great. Installation video was a huge help. Couple of pictures attached for those that have a hybrid (vs what is depicted in the video). One with the exhaust lowered and all shields removed & ready for the hitch (before holes were enlarged) and two of the installed hitch - from below and behind.

Couple of hints and comments -

1. You will need to enlarge the hole for the bolts to about 1 1/8". Our step drill didn't cut it - had to go heavy duty and since our largest heavy duty bit was 1", had to "wobble" it a bit to get large enough hole. Also, steel is tough so wasn't nearly as easy to drill as the video would have you think!

2. Still not sure why the instructions (written and video) have you remove the center plastic underbody panel only to put it back (with some difficulty/care so as not to damage all the tabs) once the hitch is installed. Perhaps needed on some models but didn't appear to be necessary for ours! (the plastic underbody panel on the driver side did need to be trimmed to fit around the hitch)

3. The heat shield needed some "adjustments" to get it back on over the hitch. We got it to bend a bit as needed so it could be bolted back up with careful use of a bit of 2x4 and a mallet!

Overall appears to be well designed hitch and was not too difficult to install (thank goodness we had the use of a car lift!)

A year later and still good. Only issue so far has been that it can drag/scrape when making a turn into a steep driveway. But quick adapted by either going slower or using a different driveway!

by:
2017 Hyundai Sonata

Quality of the hitch is great and installation was pretty easy. The only part that slowed me down was the purchase of a step drill bit to enlarge the holes in the car's frame to fit washers through for bolt attachment. 2017 Sonata hybrid.

This hitch has worked out well for my 2017 Sonata hybrid. I use it for my bicycle rack. It oes sit a bit low to the ground so I need to be careful when entering steep grade driveways as it will scrape if I enter too quickly.

Watched etrailer's videos online which helped me choose between this and the Draw-tire brand for my application. Ordered it and it shipped fast. Very good installation instructions but also the video installing instructions on their webpage that I watched before it even showed up. All and all it took me 1 hour to install. I will say I also have a lift and a shop so that probably sped the process up a bit. But from order to delivery it was a good experience all together and I will definitely use them to order the hitch for my wives van.

1 Year later and this system is still holding up awesome. Works great for my mountain bike set up but also use it to pull a non running vehicle in and out of my garage. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone in the market for a hitch. They really seem to have it figured out.

by:

Installed on 2015 Sonata. Took about 45 minutes because I veered from the instructions. The instructions call for widening a frame hole to feed the bolt through. However, if you remove the rear bumper cover you have the access you need without introducing guaranteed rust spots on your undercarriage.

by:

I love the hitch and it has served me well. It may be a case of my not reading the description well enough, but I thought it would have everything with it to install it. I ended up having to buy the light kit and the ball and hutch separately.. But the hitch is great!

2014 Nissan Frontier

So far so good. Easy to tow lightweight trailers. Mainly got it for my Jetski. In total my ski and trailer are probably around 800-900lbs. A little nervous about the wear and tear on my Kia. I don’t plan on using it often. The transmission and shocks are bound to have a short life I’m sure. Anyhow, I knew what I was doing before I installed everything.

by:
2015 Hyundai Sonata

The installation is pretty easy, the only problem I had was with the clearance of the mounting bracket for the exhaust hanger. The bracket had to be modified in the corner to clear the notch on the hitch. Even after trying to re center the hitch the clearance was not sufficient. Maybe the off set of the mounting holes on the hitch has be changed . Other than that the hitch looks great.

by:

This hitch is as easy to install as the product description says. I had it installed in about an hour alone laying near my garage floor. This is the third hitch I’ve installed on my vehicles from etrailer.com. The descriptions are accurate and the videos are extremely helpful. On my 2018 Kia Optima i found it easier to remove the back exhaust hanger to get the hitch loose mounted.

by:
2020 Kia Optima

Worked well pulling a small trailer. A little difficult getting the bolts in because the retaining plates required enlarging the frame holes slightly and I didn’t have access to a lift. Overall it’s a well made product that will serve as intended for years to come.

by:
2016 Hyundai Sonata

Great looking hitch at the lowest possible price.
Took about 2 hours to install by myself. The online installation video shows just how easy it is. and there were no hidden surprises.
What is hidden is the hitch in my photo, it tucks nicely under the bumper and is hard to photograph.....just the way I wanted it.

I can't say enough about etrailer dot com.
Ordered on Sunday, delivered on Wednesday and installed Thursday evening.

My Hitch for my 2016 Sonata arrive yesterday.
The
box protected the metal just fine with no scratches or damage as far as I can tell.
I plan to install the hitch next week, so I will be responding one more time after I get it installed.

Bye for now,

2017 Hyundai Sonata

Would be nice if the holes in the frame matched the ones in the car frame. Also, would it have been a dfeal brfeaker to make the carriage bolts 1/4 inch longer to make it possible to line them up. I have installed two otherss similar to this, and I have never fought or struggled to install/ Finally had to give up after wasting the entire weekend. There maay be a way to install without putting it up on jack stands, but I didn't find it. Save yhourself some agony and get some stands for the car.

by:

It's been working great. I've had no issues with it. I use it for my bike rack.

by:

Item came intact and fits as I'd hoped, but the box was badly damaged and busted out on both sides. No noticeable damage to the product.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The hitch mounted on car as per instructions provided. All needed hardware provided. No surprises there.

The surprise was in the video and the apparent ease with which the available mounting holes were enlarged. The Etrailer crew very obviously had access to much higher quality step bits than were available to me in an entire 100 mile radius of my location.

Over more than two hours, I wore out multiple sets of bits obtained in different stores in enlarging just four mounting holes on my 2018 Kia Optima...unless the Koreans make their car uni-frames from some, as yet unknown, super hard metal. I tend to think that the video was greatly edited to take out most of the grunting, pushing, and unsavory language that must have happened there... as it did at my location.

Other than that.....piece of cake...go for it...it pulls my 2003 1500 Intruder....

5/24/2020

I did not install on a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, I installed on a 2018 Kia Optima to haul a 2003 1500cc Intruder, which is a cruiser. I wonder if my original reference in my original write-up to a 1500 resulted in the Siverado 1500 error. As to the hitch....still hauling my 1500 Intruder, now but I bought a 1999 1500 Vulcan 7840 miles to haul, too. This is not the first hitch I buy from these guys. My 2009 Charger RIP had one of their hitches, I still have the 2018 Optima, and, now, bought a 2007 Corvette 46,000 miles which I have Etrailer hitched, too Yes, I DID!!!. NO problems on any of the installations. Still hauling...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2016 Hyundai Sonata
The only trailer hitches available for a 2016 Hyundai Sonata are Class I, 1-1/4" hitches such as the Curt # C11402. While the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD can be used it will reduce the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. That means the most your carrier and mobility scooter could weigh combined is 100 lbs.

  • Differences Between Curt and Draw-Tite Hitches for 2019 Hyundai Sonata
There are a few differences. First and foremost, the Curt # C11402 is a fit for all 2019 Sonata models, while the Draw-Tite # 24965 won't fit Hybrid models or models manufactured in Korea (If first digit of VIN is a 'K', vehicle was manufactured in Korea). Both hitches have identical capacities and would install in a similar manner, but the Curt model uses a round crosstube, while the Draw-Tite uses a square crosstube. Some folks consider the round crosstube to be more aesthetically pleasing. As...

This doesn't mean you absolutely cannot, but your best bet would be to consult with your local Hyundai dealership to determine what they recommend for your vehicle to make it possible. This is needed as your E-Mountain Bike is going to weigh to much for a trunk mounted rack or roof rack option. I prefer the Draw-Tite over the Curt # C11402 as the crossbar is one solid piece and is not cut in half with the receiver tube welded in. For your 2019 Hyundai Sonata the Draw Tite hitch part # 24965 is the better option for carrying a bike rack like our very popular Hollywood Racks Trail Rider # HR200Z mainly because it isn't as recessed under the vehicle as far as the Curt # C11402. This will make it easier to fit a bike rack without interference between the rear bumper and the upright portion of the bike rack. Also the Draw Tite is listed as having a shorter install time too.
