Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid to Use for Bike Rack or Light Trailer

Question:

Hi, I have a 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid. I would like to install a hitch primarily to serve as a bike carrier. A couple of times a year I might pull a small trailer with a 400lb ATV on it. Most of the hitches I see for the Kia Optima Hybrid, have a large ugly bar hanging down. I am looking for a hitch that is as minimalistic as possible. I would like a hitch that is almost/practically invisible. Which hitch and wiring can you recommend?

There are just a couple trailer hitches available that are confirmed to fit your 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid, both of which will feature an exposed crosstube that sits below the rear bumper. Between the two available options, I recommend the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch # C11402. This is because it has a round crosstube design that's a bit more pleasing to the eye when compared to the square bar on the Draw-Tite # 24965.

This Class I hitch will give you a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and has a towing weight capacity of 2,000 pounds and a tongue weight limit of 200 pounds. Also note that Curt does recommend that a stabilizing strap # 18050 be used with any non-trailer load like a bike rack. I have attached a short video demonstration on this product so you can see exactly how it is used. I have attached the installation instructions for this hitch that you can also take a look at.

For a trailer wiring harness I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118453. This custom harness is confirmed to fit your Hybrid model and will plug into factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights (inside the trunk). This will give you a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.

To tow a trailer you will also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains exactly how to choose the right one for your setup along with a link that will take you to our available selection.

If you are still looking for a bike rack, you will just want to make sure that the rack you choose is compatible with Class I trailer hitches. Also keep in mind that the most bikes a Class I hitch can safely support is 2. I really like the Kuat Transfer V2 # KU74FR. This platform-style rack uses ratcheting hooks to hold your bikes by the wheels without any frame contact and has a foot pedal that will let you tilt the carrier back (with the bikes still loaded) for easy rear cargo access.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this bike rack and a link that will take you to our selection of Class I bike racks that you can look through as well.
