Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great tire. Fast shipping. E-trailer is great.

by:

Great product and again SUPER SERVICE from etrailer I bought this tire and rim for a spare on our camper and only problem I ran into was trailer has aluminum wheels on it now and I bought the steel wheel and tire so after I received it (in only three days) of course I had to try it out finding that the aluminum wheels have a bigger shoulder on the lug nut and actually too big for the steel wheel so I had to run to parts store for regular lug nuts but no big deal. So glad I tried it before I actually needed it. This had no reflection of my high opinion of etrailer as they sent me what I ordered and they will be my first call when I need more parts

by:

Exactly as described on the website. Size, ply rating and mounted all correct for application. Timely product delivery. Reasonable price for quality received.

by:

As advertised.

by:

Fast and quick service. Perfect!!!

by:

I ordered this tire/wheel assembly for use as a second spare for my triple axle toy hauler. When I received it, I checked the date stamp which indicated the tire was already 3 1/2 years old.

I contacted E-Trailer's customer service via e-mail and received a quick response form Caleb H who apologized for shipping a tire of that age. He immediately shipped a replacement and arranged for a R/A and pre-paid return label for the old tire/wheel.

I received the replacement tire/wheel assembly today and it has a date stamp of mid 2016 which is very good in my opinion. I shopped around before ordering and found E-Trailer's pricing far better and with FAST free shipping, it's a win-win for me.

Thanks E-Trailer! You guys (and gals) rock!

by:

They are round. What more can I say.

Exactly what I ordered, great delivery time!

  • What is Overall Weight Capacity of Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Black Mod
Yes you are correct. Since the wheel weight capacity of the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Black Mod Wheel # AM34834 is lower than the tire you would be limited to the wheel capacity as the overall capacity of 3,050 lb instead of 3,500 lb. If there were a total of 4 of these used the capacity would be 12,200 lbs like you mentioned instead of 14k.

  • Recommendation to Replace LT215/85-16 Tires with Special Trailer Tires
The closest tire size that we have available to the LT215/85-16 tires on your trailer are a 235/80R16 like the Kenda Karrier # AM34834. This tire will be only about 0.4 inches taller in diameter and a less than an inch wider when compared to your existing set. These are also Special Trailer (ST) rated tires, which are specifically designed for the heavy load that trailers provide and will perform better than the LT tires on your trailer. This particular tire and rim combo is a black mod...

  • Can 15 inch Trailer Tire be Replaced with 16 inch Trailer Tire
The 16 inch size you mentioned isn't a standard trailer tire size so if the plan was to install a passenger vehicle tire on the trailer that would not be recommended at all. The closest trailer tire size we have to what you need is the 235/80-16 which is 30.9 inches in diameter and 10 mm wider than what you currently have. As long as the additional size wouldn't cause a clearance issue and your old wheels have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern a wheel like the Kenda Wheel and Tire part #...

  • Can 6 Lug 15 inch Trailer Wheel get Replaced with 16 inch Wheel and Tire
Yes, a 16 inch trailer wheel and tire can easily fit in place of a 15 inch 6 lug wheel and tire like with the part # AM34834. This is the size ST235/80R16 which has a weight capacity of 3,500-lb maximum load at 90 psi and has an overall diameter of 30-7/8 inches.

  • What PSI Rating Should My Trailer Tires Be Set To
Trailer tires are constructed with stronger sidewalls and are designed to be fully inflated to their max psi, unlike your vehicle's tires. The psi rating for your tires will be listed on the sidewall. Since tires with the same dimensions could have different ratings I can't say exactly what yours will be rated for, but typically it's around 80-90psi. For example, the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Black Mod Wheel # AM34834 requires 90 psi.

  • Will 235/80-16 Tires Fit Older 16.5" Wheels
Thanks for reaching out! For your application you'll need to use entirely new wheels and tires. Your current wheels are 16.5" while the 235/80-16 tires use 16" wheels so the tires won't be able to fit around your older wheels. I recommend checking out the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" Black Mod Wheel # AM34834 which has a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern, a load range of E (3,500 lbs at 90 psi), and a max speed rating of 81 mph. • Will A Wheel With A Larger Pilot Hole Still Fit If The Bolt Pattern Is The Same
As long as your wheels are not "hub-centric" and use conical-styled lug nuts your wheel will be centered by the lug nuts and still be compatible even though the pilot hole of the # AM34834 is bit larger than you need. Because the pilot hole is different you would need to use a different center cap than your original wheels if you choose to install a center cap.

Using a wheel and tire combination like the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" black Mod Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E # AM34834 on a tandem axle trailer would give you just over 7000 lbs per axle capacity at your tires. Your load capacity of your trailer will be limited to the weakest component in your system, so even though your tires/wheels will have that capacity you will want to look at each other component to determine your max capacity of your trailer.

For a similar white wheel version of the combo that you referenced you would need to purchase the tire and wheel separately, We would have the want the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Wheel # AM20785 or the Dexstar Steel Spoke Wheel.
