Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Note: Axle does not come fully assembled.

Pre-Greased Hubs

A trailer hub with the grease cap taken off shows greased bearings

The pre-greased hubs in this kit come with the bearings, races, and seals already installed, which makes for a faster install time and less mess to deal with. After you've put on the grease caps and lug nuts (included), you'll be ready to roll.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I used these axles to upgrade my travel trailer suspension.they Seem to be a good quality item. Good paint job on the axles. Compared to axles that came with the travel trailer. Which helps living on the coast.

by:

The axle seems good. Nice that the ball bearings were grease. We will see over the miles if all goes well. The delivery, besides the break assembly was quick. Not sure why the break assembly was not shipped with the rest.

I ordered two axles to upgrade my trailer capacity to what the frame is rated for, 12,000lbs. The axles have great bearing seats and backing plate studs. The backing plates are fully assembled and ready to connect to the wires already installed into the axle tubes. The hub assembly went smooth and only one set of break shoes needed adjustment. A good buy along with the 5 fully assembled tires and wheels.

by:

Exactly what I ordered packaged nice and pregreased bearings.

by:

etrailer is the best. I've been dealing with them for years. The orders are always right. The products are top-of-the-line.
Delivery was fast and free.. I have ordered online and I have called and spoken to the sales staff there who were very helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you have trailers and you don't give a trailer look, you are missing out.

by:

Great value. I upgraded a 3500lb trailer and with the added brake it really helps. I use it to haul tools around so it handles the weight much better. Towing is a breeze now. Installation was easy as well. I will be buying more axles and parts in the future.

by:

Aside from not received complete order the first time, I will still recommend etrailer for all your needs

by:

The axle fit perfectly. No instructions but not the first axle I've changed. Backing plate assembly should be pack a little better to keep them from being knocked around. Stellar service, fast shipping. Thanks

by:

Everything was going great on my new axle install today, until it wasn't. You shiped me the wrong lock washers for the brake backing plate. The correct nuts but the washers are to small. I'll have to pick them up because the customer is expecting the with to be done be today.

by:

looks like exactly what I needed, It is always challenging to find trailer parts, so many different types and sizes, the web listings and videos made it very simple, the items arrived very quickly. everything fits properly.

Very Happy!!

by:

I was worried about ordering trailer parts from a new company online. Product showed up fast and on time. Beat most other product pricing. A courtesy email was sent when product was delivered, making sure I was satisfied, giving me a direct contact incase I had any issues.
I haven't used the product yet but everything looks good.
Will order trailer product again in the future.

by:

Best thing I did was change axles to these. Went from 3500lb to these 7000lb with brakes on both. Tows and stops incredible.

by:

I wish I could give negative stars. My order arrived on time, but it was the wrong axle. The axle I ordered and paid for was a 3500 lb drop axle with electric brakes, they sent a bare 3500 lb drop axle. $[XX] difference. I immediately contacted customer service who required pictures of what I received. When I supplied them, they did not respond and even removed my order from their website so I can't track it to see if they're trying to make this right. They won't answer emails either because Ive sent a few. I'll try to get my credit card to refund me since they won't respond.

by:

Piece of cake to install. Pull out the old snapped axle install new axle. Bearings come pregreased.

by:

Was sent an 83 inch axle.

by:

I am missing the axle tubes for the 2 axles. I called and spoke to Paula on Saturday about this issue. I expect that UPS left it at their facility Thanks.

by:

Wrong axle sent did not need the 4" drop down.

by:

Super fast shipping, excellent packing to protect the product. I have not opened all the boxes yet but plan to work on the install in the morning.

by:

Looks good so far. Have not had time to put it all together.

by:

Product was exactly what I was after and helps me too get trailer back to work faster.

by:

The guys and gals at etrailer are the b est!

  • How To Find The Axle Information For a 2020 Lance 2465 Travel Trailer For a Replacement Axle
Unfortunately, I have no way to look up the parts installed on your 2020 Lance 2465. Based on the trailers weight it appears you are going to have a 4,400LB axle which we currently do not carry in any size. If you can provide me with an image of the axle tag on the rear section of your axle I can let you know if we have any larger axles you can use in its place as an upgrade.

  • How to Determine if Trailer Axle e73SR Can be Used as Replacement
Yes, so long as your current axle is 6,000 lbs and has the same measurements, if you are switching to electric brakes you can use the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - Easy Grease - 6 on 5-1/2 - 86-1/2" Long - 6,000 lbs # e73SR. To determine if the # e73SR will work for you, you'll need to measure your current axle from hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center. The hub face measurement needs to be 86-1/2" and the spring center measurement should be 71-1/2".

  • Who Makes the Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes 6 on 5-1/2 - 86-1/2" Long - 6,000 lbs
The Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes part # e73SR is made by AxleTek. If you're looking for a more well known manufacturer, we offer this same setup from Dexter as well, the Dexter Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes part # 8327826-EB which is also made here in the USA. These are both great options with similar specs, one just from a little more well manufacturer. It's really no different than going to a grocery store and seeing the store's brand and the more well known one. The Trailer...

  • Can the 6,000 Lb 86-1/2" Trailer Axle e73SR Be Flipped So the Spring Seats Are on Top
The Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes part # e73SR has a slight arch to it which is designed to flatten when the trailer is loaded so you cannot rotate the axle to shift the spring seats on top. It's setup from the factory for underslung applications. In order to use this axle in an overslung application you'll need the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit part # K71-385-00. This allows for a bolt-on swap without any cutting or welding required.

  • Replacement for 5,100 Pound 86-1/2 Inch Long Overslung Dexter Axle
When choosing a replacement axle you want one that is the same length. Since you have a hub face measurement of 86.51" a better choice would be an 86-1/2" axle. The # e65SR is an 89" axle so it is several inches longer. Also, you don't need a 6k axle, a 5,200 lb axle is fine. You can use a 6k axle but you need to keep in mind that this will not increase the capacity of your trailer. For an axle that is equivalent to the # e65SR I recommend the # e73SR, or if you just need the axle itself...

  • Are Brakes of etrailer 86-1/2 Inch, 6,000 lb Axle Self-Adjusting
The electric brakes of the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - Easy Grease - 6 on 5-1/2 - 86-1/2" Long - 6,000 lbs # e73SR are not self-adjusting, they are manual-adjust. To get the same axle with hubs and self-adjusting electric brakes you'd need the Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles - 86-1/2" Long - 6,000 lbs # e33GR, Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K, Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting # AKEBRK-7-SA, and Mounting Hardware # BRKH12.

  • Do you Have a Trailer Axle With 85" Hub Face to Hub Face For 3,500LB Trailer Hubs?
The closest axle hub to hub width we have to 85" is our 86-1/2" 5,200LB Axle # e73SR. This axle will not fit your current hubs you purchased but it does come with brakes and hubs already. To use the Hubs # AKHD-655-35-K & # AKIHUB-655-35-K you purchased and mount to the 85" hub face you would need to replace your axles with the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR3500S05. Otherwise you would need to visit a local axle dealer to have custom axles ordered. The Timbren has its own...
