Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 40185 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness. This product is going to fit a 2005-2008 Ford F150. It's designed to replace the 4-pole trailer connector that was or is on your truck. Each vehicle's specific connector is going to be pre-wired. It's going to use the original OEM connectors for a watertight protection, a guaranteed fit, and a factory look. When installing this, you don't have to worry about cutting or splicing or taping any of your wires. The unit is going to be constructed of 16-gauge wiring.

It's got tape going all around the the wiring, so it's going to stay grouped together. The plugs on the harness right here are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. You do get the 4-pole connector on this end. It's got an easy-grip design. It's going to come with the dust cap to protect the connections points when the plug is not being used. On the packaging, it's going to have detailed, easy to follow instructions.

This can be used with 5-pole, 6-pole, or 7-pole adapters. Again, really simple installation. Unplug and remove the currently or previously installed 4-way flap. Then plug in these ports to the connection points. Then you got your new 4-way connector. It's going to come with a couple of zip ties.

That way you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring. It's going to come with your terminal grease. That gets applied to the electrical connections on the vehicle side and the 4-pole connector side to help prevent corrosion to the connection points. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness.

  • Replacing Factory 4-Way on 2006 Ford F-150 with 4-Way/7-Way Connector
Yes! The Hopkins Plug-N-Tow # 40185 is a plug and play solution for replacing the factory 4-Way on your 2006 Ford F-150. To add a 7-Way/4-Way connector you would then need the Hopkins # 37185. This connects directly to the 4-Way and then has additional wires that you can connect to wiring run to the rear of your pickup for it to be fully functional. You can mount the Hopkins connector with part # C57202 to avoid drilling into your trailer hitch. If you want to permanently install this...

  • Recommended 4-Way Harness and 4-Way to 7-Way Adapter For 2008 Ford F-150
For your 2008 Ford F-150, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-N-Tow (R) Vehicle Wiring Harness # 40185 and then use # 37185 to give you the additional wiring features. I recommend using # 10-2-1 for wiring sold by the foot. This will allow you to add a brake controller like # 90195 to your vehicle using wiring harness # 3035-P. There should be a blue (brake) and orange or red (12V) wire at the end of the drivers side frame rail for easy connection. I've attached a video to assist. You may...

  • Ford F-150 STX 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Installation
Wiring your 2007 Ford F-150 STX for towing a trailer with a 4-Way flat connector should not be too hard. If you look under the truck along the inside of the driver's side frame rail, you may see a connector that has wires running to it. If so, use a circuit tester, item # PTW2993 if needed, and make sure the trailer lighting functions are working to this connector. If the circuits are live to this connector, then the Plug-N-Tow (TM) Vehicle Wiring Harness, item # 40185, will work on your...

  • Troubleshooting 2005 Ford F-150 Taillights Not Functioning After Trailer Wiring Install
The Plug-N-Tow # 40185 that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for your 2005 Ford F-150 so if installed properly it should work just fine. Normally when what you described happens the problem is that the wiring harness just isn't making a good connection and would just need to be double checked that it is plugged in properly. Since you were having issues with your trailer wiring prior the problem could be something else related to the lighting of the truck. However, typically...

  • Troubleshooting 2018 Ford F-150 W/ 4-way Connector That Has Power But Doesn't Power Trailer Lights
Since your 2008 Ford F-150 has a 4-way connector and you tested it and it has power but your boat trailer lights are not working I would check that the connector does not have corrosion/debris on or in it causing a connection issue. It sounds like your truck came with the factory 4-way connector, and if that is the case then it does not have the correct connector to just replace the connector with a 7-way. Instead you would need to use the # 37185 which will plug into your factory 4-way...

  • Trailer Left Turn and Tail Light Not Working on a Trailer Towed by a 2006 Ford F-150
What I think may be happening is there is the absence of a relay that will not allow certain functions to work on the trailer lights if the load on the system is great enough. I would consult the owners manual, find the location of any relays/fuses associated with the trailer wiring, and make sure they are in good working order or add the ones that may be missing. Another issue could be a faulty ground somewhere since your ground test did get it to partially work. You will want to check...

  • Parts Needed to Add 7 Way Trailer Connector to 2007 Ford F-150 with 4 Way
In order to add a 7 way to your 2007 Ford F-150, you can utilize the existing 4 way connector like the # 40185, but there will be some additional wiring that you'll need to run in order to add it and have a functional brake controller. You will need to run a wires from the 7 way to the battery for a 12v power supply and into the cab of the truck for the brake controller wire. You'll want to use the # ETBC7 which comes with everything you need to install this including breakers and wiring;...

According to Ford, a 2005 Ford F-150 SuperCab with four-wheel drive and a 5.4L V8 will have a capacity between 7,300 lbs and 9,300 lbs depending on what wheelbase it has and what axle ratio it has. I recommend finding what yours is and looking in your owner's manual, which will have these capacities. Then for a trailer hitch you can add the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C14357 for a heavy duty, Class IV hitch and if you need to add a wiring harness the Plug-N-Tow (R) Vehicle Wiring Harness...

  • No Left Hand Turn Signal On a 2006 Ford F-150
If you don't have power on the left hand stop/turn signal pin on the trailer connector for your 2006 Ford F-150 then you likely either have a blown fuse or a loose/severed wire. The fuse for this circuit is located in the engine bay fuse box, slot 42 which is a 10 amp fuse. If this fuse is good then check the wires at the back of the trailer connector and work your way back to see if any breaks are present. If you still can't find anything wrong then you may just need to replace the...

I've added a photo that we have on the product page of this hitch installed on the same truck for you to check out. • Trailer Lights Not Fully Working on a Trailer Towed by a 2007 Ford F-150 with Factory Tow Package
It does sound like a ground problem. Most wiring issues are due to a bad ground connection. But first, I do recommend checking the trailer and vehicle side connectors for dirt or corrosion in and behind the plugs. That can cause the problem as well and it is the easiest thing to check. After that, if you still have issues, start checking all of the grounds starting with the truck side trailer connector and working back to the tail lights on the trailer. The grounds should all be connected...

  • Troubleshooting Malfunctioning Turn Signals on Utility Trailer Towed by 2006 Chevy Silverado
The first thing you will need to do is to test the 4-pole connector on the truck with a circuit tester like # PTW2993. This will tell you if the wiring problem exists on the truck or on the vehicle itself. The pins on the connector fed by the yellow and green wires should light up your tester when the right turn, left turn and brake lights are activated. If you do not get any signal on the right or left turn pins, you most likely have a blown fuse. Check the fuse box under the hood. If...

  • Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way in a 2008 Ford F-150
You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 40185. Now if your trailer does not have brakes all you would need is the part # 37185 as an adapter to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. If you do have trailer brakes you would need the # 3035-p and the # 37185 and a brake controller. The brake output circuit is ran to the truck frame rail where you can easily complete it to the blue wire of the 37185. Check out the FAQ article I attached on this...

The Draw-Tite Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 41549, that you have referenced will fit your 2005 Ford F-150 long bed. This hitch has a gross towing weight capacity of 6,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 600 lbs. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Draw-Tite hitch. The # 51020 hitch is listed as a Pro Series hitch that fits 1997 to 2004 Ford F-150, so it is not designed for your 2005 vehicle. If you will be towing with this hitch I would also recommend the...

If you have the US Car Connector at the rear of your F-150 then you can simply install the Reese # 74682. • Blown Fuse & Relay with New Utility Trailer Running Lights
One possibility is that the running lights on the new trailer are simply drawing too much current and are blowing the fuses. Trailers can be equipped with either high-efficiency LED lights or standard incandescent bulbs, which draw about 10 times the power. If the new trailer has many more running lights than the boat trailer, and/or if they are incandescent types, then they may be overloading the vehicle wiring. It is also possible that the running light wiring is pinched, has a bare...

  • Boat Trailer Causes Trailer Brake and Trailer Turn Signal Fuses to Blow
There are a couple of possible reasons the trailer brake and turn signal fuses have been blowing. First, you want to make sure you unplug your trailer's 4-Way connector from your vehicle's connector before you back your trailer into the water. Unplugging these connectors can help protect the light circuits from the water. It is best to unplug the connectors a couple of minutes before you back your trailer into the water. If you already unplug your trailer connector before backing into...

  • Troubleshooting 2013 Ford F-150 Trailer Wiring that Blinkers Stopped Working
Sounds like you may have some blown fuses under the hood of your 2013 Ford F-150. Check the fuse box for trailer wiring fuse locations and replace as necessary as it sounds like the turn signal circuit fuses have blown. This circuit most likely blew from a short circuit on your trailer wiring. Before you reconnect your trailer wiring I would check the wiring for the turn signals and fix any cut or exposed wire on the circuit that could be causing the short.

It plugs right into the truck's wiring behind the rear bumper. I looked up a fuse box diagram for a 2011 F-150 and it looked like the trailer tow left stop/turn relay is at location 37 and the trailer tow right stop/turn relay is at location 38. Use a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed to test the pin. If this pin does not show power when the vehicle is in reverse, then you will need to route a wire to the reverse light circuit on the truck to get it to work. It is also possible that you will need to check the fuse on the truck related to the reverse light circuit...

The fuses are typically the place I start when troubleshooting a plug with no power, but as you have completely replaced your fuse box, that is a bit of a moot point. What is most likely causing the lack of power is damage to one or more wires. Using a tester, like the Circuit Tester # PTW2993, you will need to test the pins on the plug.
