Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Fairly straightforward install. A lot of bracing bolts to remove and put back if you have a convertible. Hardest part is getting under the Mustang. Barely noticeable, pulls small 4x6 trailer and carries the mountain bikes like a champ.

After one year, hitch is still working as promised.

The hitch works great, have used it on one vacation to carry our bicycles. I do have to be careful on driveways that have a dip, or the hitch will drag on the pavement. Considering how low my Mustang is to the ground, this was to be expected. I am also satisfied with the installer recommended by etrailer.

by:

Adam was great to deal with, confirmed the correct hitch for my Mustang. He had it shipped the same day and received it a week faster than was planned
2022 Mustang GT convertible with active exhaust
Installation was about 90 minutes

by:

Excellent. Super fast shipping. I screwed a 2x6 to the bottom of hitch with deck screws,so I could set it on my jack without having it tip over. It worked awesome!

Ford Mustang

The fit is great and does what I bought it to do. I use it to hook my bike rack to the back of my Mustang for weekend rides and it's super convenient. Similar reviews have captured my same sentiments better than I could in regards to install difficulty and shipping packaging quality. If a bolt falls into the frame while trying to thread it through, it adds quite a bit of time trying to get it back out, so budget accordingly like any maintenance project.

The tow hitch itself is great, but etrailer customer service, as well as shipping and handling, is sub-standard overall. The original tow hitch I ordered was delivered in a damaged cardboard box with numerous holes caused by the tow hitch sliding around during shipment. My local auto shop tried to install the hitch, but was unable to do so, as it was bent; presumably during shipment. I called etrailer to request a new hitch, and to their credit, they promptly shipped a replacement. The new hitch also arrived in a damaged box with holes; but fortunately, was otherwise undamaged, and was installed with no further issues. As for the return of the damaged hitch, etrailer notified me via e-mail late on the evening (9:00pm) of June 22nd, that UPS had the return label, and would attempt to pick up the package for 3 consecutive days starting on June 22nd. I left the package in my driveway starting on the morning of June 23rd. No pick-up attempt has been made, and my local UPS delivery driver even left a note on the package stating "Needs label". I have e-mailed etrailer several times in the subsequent weeks, and each time, they have assured me it was being worked. It is now July 19th, and the return package has been sitting in my driveway for nearly a month. Bottom line, good quality product if it arrives undamaged (a big "if" with poor packaging), and below average customer service. Recommend you purchase directly from the OEM, if possible.

2018 Ford Mustang

So I have a fully loaded 2018 Mustang GT with the active exhaust. This exhaust does create an additional obstacle to installation and will require you to remove the control leads for the active exhaust system. It also reduces the amount of clearance you have when maneuvering the hitch into position.

After many prayers to the god of the f-word, we were able to juggle it into place and bolt the thing on pretty much exactly as described in the super helpful installation video that is given with this hitch. I don’t think I could have figured it out without the video so top marks there guys.

Note that you will need an 11/16 socket for the hitch bolts themselves. Considering everything is metric these days I think the manufacturer should just give metric bolts instead of SAE. But it’s not a big deal. It’s a 13mm socket for the exhaust hanger bolts.

Also it’s worth investing in a 90 degree electric ratchet for the very top bolt at the back for the exhaust hanger. Once the hitch is bolted in that hanger is basically impossible to get at and your arms will fall off trying to manually do them up in the tiny cavity that is left above the hitch. I did one bolt then went to Horrible Fright and bought one and my arms are thanking me.

It should be noted that while the hitch is rated to 2000lbs the vehicle itself is only rated to tow 1000lbs as per the manual.

For my application, towing a motorcycle, it’s bueno. The hitch is solidly constructed and well designed and thanks to etrailer for making sure I had the right parts.

This hitch is great for our Mustang! We purchased it to haul bikes, worrying that the bike racks that strap over the trunk can damage the paint over time, and are a pain to take on and off. I was going to do the install myself as the instructions seem easy enough and I have the proper tools, but I do not have ramps or a lift so getting under this low profile car would be next to impossible. An auto repair shop installed it for me in about an hour, and they told me that there is a little bit extra work to install it on a convertible due to having to remove a support member before dropping the exhaust. We're very happy with it - but take note: If you have a sloped driveway, this hitch might scrape the pavement when you are backing out! It happened to my wife the first time she backed out of our driveway. Going slow and at a slight angle solved the problem.

by:

Had a friend install the receiver, took about an hour. The receiver and Thule (2) bike rack are very good quality. I installed the hitch in about 30 minutes...3 bolts and you are done.
Janice at etrailer.com was a breeze to deal with. Everyone needs 10 people like Janice to make their business run smoothly. Thanks Fred

Hitch arrive a day earlier than expected. How the hitch was received is only reason I did not give it a five star. The package box had no cushion and the hitch was literally sticking out of the box. A few dents and missing paint but the product was made good enough to not bend. The job was easy. Took about 3 hrs since I have a convertible. Not bad for a solo job with no power tools. The over all look looks really good mounted. FYI the phone scan option in the directions for step by step pictures don’t work.

by:
2016 Ford Mustang

Received my order in about a week, and everything was in excellent condition. Took it to my Ford dealer who quoted me about 6hrs@$120/h. Asked a friend for help instead and we got the receiver as well as the wiring done (neatly) in under 3 hours. I know she needs a wash (it's monsoon season!), but I've included a photo to show the clearance. When viewing from a standing position you wouldn't even know it was there.

by:
2017 Ford Mustang

Just installed the hitch, it's a two man job if you don't have the right tools. I like the way the item looks and cannot wait until I tow a trailer to see how the hitch handles.

by:

The hitch fit perfectly on my 18 convertible. Install was easy due to great directions on the website. The only issue was getting it into place as I installed it by myself. Propped it up on the jack as the hitch was strapped to a 2x4
.

by:

Installation went well. On the convertible there is a brace that stiffens the chassis that has to be removed to do the installation. It's reinstalled after the hitch is in place.

by:

This hitch was difficult to install. Threading the bolts through the frame of the Mustang is dicey at best. It is very difficult to work with, holding up the parts while handling the threading wire. If the bolt falls off the wire you are in trouble because there is no way to retrieve it. I Was careful, read the instructions and watched the video several times before trying it and still lost one of the 6 bolts when the wire stretched and the bolt slipped out. No way to retrieve it nor could I send in another as that bolt blocked the path for the new one. I use the hitch sparingly only when needed because of this.

Oh no, Im sorry to hear that the installation was difficult. We recommend that you get the missing bolt at your local hardware store. When purchasing the replacement hardware, make sure that you are using grade 8 hardware. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to get in touch with you on this matter.

Its the only hitch for my 2015 Mustang GT and its awesome! I now can haul my bike wherever I want to ride!

by:

I love etrailer! Fast shipping, great pricing and amazing customer service!

by:

Bit of job to put it in. It took a few hours to do, the frame has to be removed somewhat and reinstalled. Some of the mounting bolts don’t want to go back in straight. Had to use a tap to clean up the holes 2 different times. The paint scratches easily and rusts inside. Would’ve been nice if powder coated. Speed Bumps are a menace now! When a speed bump now hits it (often) or sounds like thunder and terrible. Not a fun job, Woof. But fit is good.

Thank you for your review! While this hitch is powder coated, a good way to prevent rust from forming where the hitch has scratches is by applying rust resistant paint. I linked an article that has more information that may be helpful to you.

by: 05/24/2021

Seems to be a good product.
Could let
people know that you have to enlarge the holes in the frame to get back piece in.
But it should work just fine.

I am 100% satisfied with my receiver hitch! It’s sturdy and easy to use. I was excited to find a product that would accommodate my Mustang and my bike rack.
The only concern is its proximity to the ground. Since my car is already a lower vehicle, you have to take care on steep driveways and such so that it won’t drag the ground. It’s not an issue with regular driving conditions.

  • Ground Clearance with Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installed on a 2016 Ford Mustang Convertible
With Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24928 installed on your 2016 Ford Mustang Convertible the distance from the ground to the bottom of the receiver will be approximately 7 inches. Not a whole lot of space. You didn't mention which Hollywood Racks platform rack you were interested in but I recommend either the Sport Rider SE, # HLY84FR, or the Trail Rider, # HR200Z, both of which have a good amount of rise in the shank to help with ground clearance at the bike rack.

The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-bike platform rack for 1-1/4 hitches # SH12G (Gray) # SH12P (Pearl) # SH12B (Black) will be compatible with your 2016 Ford Mustang. These racks when folded up will...

The only size of trailer hitch receiver for a 2018 Ford Mustang is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24928. This is likely because these cars aren't made for towing and don't have the support needed for a larger hitch, so the 1-1/4 inch is all that is available. Keep in mind that since this is a Class I hitch, your accessories all need to be Class I compatible as well, including a bike rack. So if your current rack is not Class I compatible...

Unfortunately, there is not a larger 2 inch option available for the Mustang line.
