Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the lower interior trim panels and the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Tail light diagram

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed within the side storage compartment.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Modulite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because your vehicle runs on a multiplex wiring system, the wiring needs to be converted to be compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

I like the connections and distribution box as well as the instructions/video. Two points I would add are that there is a ground bolt when you open up the left side panel to get at the tail light. Probably better to use that than a self tapping screw that might lose its continuity.

Next, it’s difficult to run the wire through the suspension/frame in the left rear. I zip tied it to the top of that, keeping it away from any moving parts. Lots of zip ties and making sure to trim off any loose ends. Running it through the sill is no problem but when you get to the end instead of going up into the engine bay where it’s difficult to zip tie and is close to the exhaust system, you might want to run on the inside of the felt in the wheel well. You’re already taking off two of the T 25 screws when you go forward through the sill and reach the end, so all you need to do is remove three more T 25 screws at the edge of the wheel arch and two 10 mm plastic nuts. Then you can pull the felt away from the wheel arch and run the wire up and underneath a foam block that is at the top. Up in the engine compartment, that comes out just forward of the positive lug, underneath the metal that the lug is bolted to. It might help to place the wire up underneath the foam as far as you can and then reach back from up in the engine bay to fish it forward. I think either way you do it you can get a clean install and a working connector. Just food for thought.

After a year, and many trips to the dump with my little trailer, as well as some U-Haul rentals, I haven’t had any problems with the wiring.

I received the shipment timely and the updates while in transit were excellent. However, the shipment had minimal packaging and was in bad shape when it arrived. Fortunately, there does not seem to be significant damage to the hitch and I located all of the parts for the wiring kit.

by:
2016 Volkswagen Touareg

love how fast delivery was thank you. the parts here are very good

by:

As far as vehicle installations go, this went about as smooth as possible. Even if you are only slightly mechanically inclined, you should be able to tackle this install. All of the connectors fit right up on my vehicle as expected. Nothing unexpected. The How-To video was VERY helpful and guided me the entire way. 10/10!

2013 Volkswagen Touareg

I purchased a trailer wiring kit for a 2013 VW Touareg. It was the easiest trailer wiring Kit that I have ever installed. etrailer.com has complete & easy to follow on line instructions. The best part is that the kit, 118668 has tail lite plug adaptors for a quick and EASY connection.

by:
2014 Volkswagen Touareg

I installed this wiring harness at the same time I installed a hitch on my VW Touareg. The video provided online was a huge help and complimented the very detailed, application specific instructions provided. There was only 1 part that I thought could be more specific and that was when it came to getting the long black wire that gets routed to the engine compartment, out of the rear of the vehicle. I ended up popping out a round rubber gasket from the wheel well and routing the wire out there. The video indicates that you can feel around and find a "vent" for the wire to exit through. Either way, I was able to get everything connected, and even though it took a bit of time, it was relatively simple. I'm only "handy" not a mechanic or electrician, but after watching the video I realized that this would be pretty simple and wasn't anything that I couldn't handle.

by:

Very easy to install with instructions and video showing how to do. Need to have some mechanical and electrical knowledge thou to complete this work.

by:

Worked great! Easy instal and most likely saved me a bazillion dollars not going to the dealership. Great installation videos also. Thanks!

by:

This was an easy install; especially with the helpful installation videos provided by E-trailer.

2014 Volkswagen Touareg

by:

Nothing but quality!! All you need to complete the wiring for your trailer.

by:

by:
2012 Volkswagen Touareg

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2011 Volkswagen Touareg for Towing Travel Trailer
We have trailer hitches that fit your 2011 Volkswagen Touareg that have more than enough towing capacity for towing the travel trailer you mentioned like the Draw Tite # 75950 but none of the hitches we offer for your vehicle can be used with a weight distribution system as they were not rated for this application. So you'd still be able to tow your trailer but not be able to use the WD system. For trailer wiring you'd want the part # 118668 which is a custom fit kit for your vehicle and...

  • Left Turn Signal And Brake Lights Not Working On 2013 Volkswagen Touareg
It sounds like it could be a weak ground. Check to make sure your grounding point on the vehicle is on a nice piece of metal that is clean and free of rust or paint. It is also a good idea to check the connectors coming off the vehicle with a circuit tester # PTW2993 to verify they are in proper functioning order and is receiving the correct voltage. I have attached a help article to aide you in your troubleshooting.

  • Brake Controller Recommended for 2015 Volkswagen Touareg
Due to the sophisticated nature of the wiring system of your Touareg, I believe the Curt Echo, part # C51180 would be your best bet. Instead of mounting to the underside of the dash, the Echo installs at the connection between the vehicle and trailer connectors. Going this route would ensure you'd have no worries about banging your knee getting in and out of the vehicle. Instead of physically tapping into the vehicle wiring, the # 119250KIT uses sensors that snap around the individual brake lamp, turn signal and running lamp circuits without piercing the wire. I've also linked to a demonstration video explaining how the Spectrum Brake Controller works.

  • Does Power Wire Need to Be Run to Battery for T-One Wiring Harness on 2013 Volkswagen Touareg
The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118668 which is a fit for a 2013 Volkswagen Touareg requires a power wire to be run from the converter at the rear to the battery in the engine bay per the instructions. This is the only way to ensure the circuit is rated appropriately for the power demands of the trailer lights.
