Amperage Draw of Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Kit For 2012 Volkswagen Touareg
Question:
Hello. I was wondering if you can tell me how many amps the Powered ModuLite draws? I would like to T off my 12v power right above the right tail light bolt on the inside of the vehicle behind the panel. It is a constant 12v not switching. Also with the car off does the Powered ModuLite draw any power when hooked up to a constant power source like your video shows under the hood? It is a diesel with a monster battery however sits for long periods of time and need all the power I can get to start in the Minnesota winters. Thanks for your help.

The amperage rating for the Tekonsha trailer wiring harness part # 118668 that you referenced is 4.2 amps per each stop/turn circuit and 7.5 amps for the running light circuit. While I certainly understand how tempting it is to power the wiring kit from a more convenient circuit to access than the vehicle battery you really have to make sure you use the vehicle battery only as it's only method that won't void warranty.
The reason it draws from the battery is so that it can totally bypass all of the vehicle wiring circuits which allows it to keep the vehicle as safe as possible since a short in the trailer wiring wouldn't damage the vehicle wiring. With the vehicle off the converter box does not draw any amperage so it would not prematurely drain a battery.
I attached an install video for this kit on a similar 2012 Touareg like yours for you to check out as well.
