Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These pewag ladder-patterned chains are great winter weather chains for your SUV, truck, or 4WD vehicle. Not only do the grooved square links dig into deep snow and ice better than rounded or standard square links, but the reversible design of these chains also allows them to wear under standard use much longer than other chains. And if you're partial to American-made products, you'll be happy to know that these are made in Colorado.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

Twist cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Recheck tension

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Thanks again Quinn!!!

Chains worked as designed. We use them in our trips to our farms in Montana and Wyoming when roads are open of course. Truck and trailer do not slip or fish tail.

Pewag PWE2228SC chains are nothing fancy. Good old traditional design. Came in a canvas bag with no closure. Successfully mounted them on P165/70R17 tires. Have not tested them in real-life snowy conditions. After chains are on, should drive vehicle 1/4 to 1/2 tire revolution, then tighten chain hooks further. Adding additional tension cords almost a must. Picture shows chain loosening at 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions after driving only a few feet. Consider adding threaded chain link to tie down extra free links to prevent them from flopping around when driving. Flopping chains are know to cut brake and ABS lines and cause other damage to the vehicle, especially if chains are installed on front tires. Thule XG12 Pro may be a better choice for front tires, because nothing flops around on the medial side of chains.

  • Availability of Tire Snow Cables to fit 33x12R18 Tire and Wheel
The Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, # PW3029C, that you referenced are a ladder style cable that uses hardened steel rollers to provide traction on snow and ice. Unfortunately, the Glacier Cable Snow Chains are not available in the size tire that you referenced. Tire chains and cables are fit by the size of the tire. According to my fit guide we have tire chains that will fit a tire size of 33x12.5-18. You may want to double check the size of your tire to make sure it is 12 inches wide...

I recommend The Pewag Tire Chain - Zig-Zag Pattern # PW94FR for your 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty with 295/65R18 tires. The zig-zag pattern provides the maximum traction in snow, ice, and mud and mounts easily with a hook and lever. We do not offer or our competitors do not offer a V-bar style chain for 295/65R18 tires. I like the zig zag pattern over the other tire chains that we offer for you size tires because it helps deliver a smoother, and more stable ride than traditional ladder patterns....

  • Recommended Pewag All Square Link Snow Tire Chains for 285/60-20 Tires on 2020 Ram 2500
I don't show the # PWE3229SC as being a fit for a 285/60-20 tire. The correct Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains for that size would be part # PWE3231SC. The square chain links will give a really good bite on snow or ice for superior traction, and the cam tighteners allow the chains to get a snug fit on the tire. These would be an excellent choice for snowy roads in mountainous areas. If you click the provided link, you can see a product demonstration video featuring the Pewag # PWE3231SC.

For your tire size of 285/60-20 on your 2016 Ram 3500 we have the Pewag Tire Chains part # PWE3231SC which are a confirmed fit. When it comes to using tire chains on any vehicle the auto makers get the final word, so I suggest your first move be a check of your owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding the use of tire chains on your particular Ram 2500.
