Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

The kit I received had mismatched air fittings: one was a 3/8npt elbow instead of the required 1/8npt elbow. etrailer sent a replacement elbow and I was able to source a reducer to complete the install as I await the replacement. Glad i checked my parts before I started.

The install is pretty straight forward and the instructions are clear. The fasteners are difficult to access if you are doing the install by yourself. Must have tools include quality hose cutter and two 1-1/8in sockets.

The bags added 1in of lift to my unladen 2023 Tacoma Trail Edition at 5psi; 1-1/2in at 10psi; and 3in at 70psi.

At the 5psi minimum pressure the ride is firmer than stock. On acceleration the back end no longer “stuffs” wich is fine with me.

First, my order was processed and shipped on a Sunday. There's not too many companies doing that outside of Amazon. Awesome! If not for UPS delay in Sparks, NV, I would have received my order in less time then mentioned at check out.

Second, my Firestone kit came complete. I was skeptical due to some reviews stating they received the wrong size air hose connector. Not this one. Seems they've worked it out. Kit is installed and doing exactly what I expected.

Hauling 4400 lbs (dry) camp trailer
Reduced squat from 2.5" to 1" at 25psi for comfort. Can easily level, but I prefer slight squat at the tounge.

Over, great experience!

I mounted the Firestone airbag system on my 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup. It was not as easy as the video makes it look (especially on the drivers side) but, it it turned out great. I mounted the compressor in the compartment behind the passenger seat behind the driver (see pic). I mounted the gauge and switch in the compartment between the driver and passenger (see pic). The airbag pictures are when they were holding 70 lbs pressure checking for air leaks. The first picture of the pickup is with 5 lbs air pressure in the bags and the second is with 50 lbs air pressure in the bags. When driving with 5 lbs in the bags it has the normal smooth ride and does a good job at 30 lbs of keeping the back end from sagging when I pull my boat.

Everything is still working great without any leaks. I would highly recommend them for any Tacoma owners.

by:

The OEM air bags on my truck developed a leak and my truck was riding by on the frame. The install was an easy install and my truck had an instant better ride. My truck was level and looked like a truck again.

by:

After receiving the wrong air fittings, the replacements I received are also wrong. I will be submitting an RMA and sending the kit back.

by:
2020 ToyotaTacoma

First impression was negative - the package had obviously been opened and partially installed before being re-packed and returned. The 'safety seal' had been cut, a few of the parts were mildly scraped, and there was an extra part (2nd heat shield).

After going over everything carefully, I decided to install the product. The install went exactly per instructions. I've been quite happy with the actual product. One improvement would be a better brace for the valves.

If I had received an unopened box, I would have given this 4 stars.

by:

My Tacoma's rear end would droop with the truck bed packed full of racing gear and the car trailer loaded up in tow. Steering would get very light on hilly roads and the trailer safety chains would drag. As shown in the picture, these air springs easily fixed this undesirable towing condition and she rides level and stable with these air springs at 65 psi.

by:

Shipped missing parts necessary for the install. The air fittings at the top of the bag are the wrong sizes and no 5/8” lock nuts. Derails the entire install process and wasted my day now since no one around me stocks the necessary air fittings.

I’ll adjust the rating here once I get the correct parts with the kit - but you’d think with ALL these reviews mentioning the missing parts would make these folks notice and correct the problem.

by:

After a year these have held up great. They hold air consistently and still give a plush ride. Maintenance free!

Ride-Rite solved sag problem. When pulling our travel trailer, the Tacoma sagged. The Firestone Ride-Rite has leveled the truck and trailer beautifully. By adjusting the air in the bags, I can fine tune the lift very easily. I am very happy with fit and performance.

by:

I have had the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs for several months now and haven't any issues. They do a great job in lifting and leveling my truck. Great product!

by:

One of the air line elbows leaked. Had to contact Firestone. They sent me new fittings and air line. Very good customer support from Firestone. I did have to essentially do the installation twice :(
They work great. Essential for a small truck carrying a wide range of loads and/or pulling a trailer.

I installed these on my 22’ Tacoma as soon as the UPS guy out them in my hands. Install took 3 hours with floor jacks. *photos include Day Star cradles.

by:

Fairly easy to install with a second person. A couple bolts were difficult but manageable. Ride is definitely what I was hoping for pulling a camper with a loaded Tacoma!

by:

They work perfect!

2023 ToyotaTacoma

Bought these from etrailer in 2018 for my '12 Tacoma. I liked the bags and etrailer so much that I'm back for a set for my '23 Tacoma.

Install is easy. If you're going to haul or tow anything with a Tacoma these bags are a must.

by:

They work extremely well, can't recommend enough

by:

easy install, work great for what I nee ded.

by:

Unfortunately, I have installed the air bags but are unable to use them as they were provided with the incorrect size air fittings. Therefore, my truck is currently incapacitated waiting for the correct size fittings. I have been advised that the correct fitting kits have been requested, however I was also advised that they are running behind and it may be a few days before they can be shipped. That is not a very encouraging response.

by:

Wrong sized air fitting in hardware bag. Sent 1/4" NPT fitting, should have been 1/8".

Called customer service for etrailer. Quick answer, quick response to the issue. Unfortunately it sounds like the Tacoma kit has had this issue before as customer service rep indicated 3-4 other orders with this same issue. The part is not in stock either so not sure how long a replacement will take to receive.

etrailer did confirm that if I can locate the correct part locally, with proof of receipt, I would be refunded/credited that amount. Frustrating on the manufacturer's behalf, thankful etrailed is honestly and responsive.

If corrected in timely manner will update.

I think the kit will work well once I can actually get it hooked up. Using to improve suspension with truck camper.

Unfortunately my Firestone airbags arrived with the wrong fittings for the airline to airbag connection. I needed to have them installed asap for a road trip the next day. Lots of running around town to find the right parts was what it took to get me on the road the next day. Giving it 3 stars because once set up they do work good

by:

Easy install and works as advertised

by:

This was obviously a return from a previous customer and looks like they installed and used it prior to returning it.

I am glad our customer service team is sending you a brand new pair. I am sorry you received a used product! It is not our policy to sell used items like new.

by:

They are not a cure-all; but do help when hauling heavy loads, or towing a travel trailer with my 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Pick-up.

Working fine after a year. Had a problem with leaks and pressure drop at first. Had to cut and re-install air lines and connectors at the airbag end, several times. But eventually got them to hold pressure. Now only slight air loss over several days.

They really helped to prevent sagging rear end, and minimize bucking when towing a small travel trailer with my Toyota Tacoma.

I still finally had to go with a load distribution hitch with anti-sway device to completely minimize sway while towing.

by:

The quality of Firestone products are great. These airbags seem well made and the kit is super easy to install.

  • Comparing Air Bags and Weight Distribution for Towing with a 2007 Toyota Tacoma
The best option for leveling while towing/hauling is an air bag kit because there is no additional setup like a weight distribution system and they can be adjusted easily to get the perfect mix of comfort and support. I recommend the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2407 if the axle is located below the leaf spring pack or part # F2410 if it's above. The air bag kit can then be combined with a weight distribution system if you want, may others use this combo because the...

The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2407 which are a fit for a 2015 Toyota Tacoma are designed to attach to the leaf springs so any modifications to these springs such as add-a-leaf could render the system incompatible so I cannot recommend this. It does look like the lower bracket of the Firestone Ride Rite kit part # F2407 has changed. • Can an Air Bag Kit Replace a Weight Distribution System When Towing a Trailer
For your 2012 Toyota Tacoma the # F2407 has been confirmed as a fit and will take out the rear suspension sag you are experiencing when towing your trailer.
