Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

To be short and simple. After years being loyal to the product and doing over 100+ firestone air bag installs I would NOT RECOMMEND buying from them until such time they can get things correct. They know they are sending out boxes that do NOT come with all necessary parts. (they send a spacer if you need it but not the needed insert to the spacer) but BEST OF ALL, instructions are NOT correct and Firestone acknowledges this and sends out the product anyway. 4 calls & several emails and THEN i am told the correct install procedures. They did send the spacer insert on first call and got it quickly. Didnt help until days later getting the correct install procedure for several more days.

The parts were not packaged verry well. All the hardware and small pieces were loose in the box I am missing 22 fasteners and one spacer. The other large parts in the box are in good shape.

Wow, that is a lot missing! I sent a note to our customer service team lead and they will be getting in touch with you about this shortly. I am sorry it arrived like that!

by:

I placed an order for airbag system. The airbag system I received was not the kit that I ordered. Customer service assured me they would ship out the correct kit. I received replacement kit. Kit number was correct, but half the items in the kit were not correct. In the process of returning shipment for refund, I have one weekend before my trip so I ordered the kit from a local distributor. Unfortunately, I am paying more, but if there is an error in the shipment, I can go to a brick and mortar shop locally and get the correct kit. If I was not in a time crunch, I would wait for the cheaper kit from etrailer. I understand Firestone changes their numbers frequently.

This does not fit 2022 F350 properly! I called etrailer first and they referred me to Firestone. I got ahold of a technician there and he confirmed the instructions wouldn’t work with the 2022 F350. He told me to flip the bottom bracket and let it rest on the jounce tongue. I did this and still didn’t like the way it was set up.I pumped 80 psi in it and didn’t like the way it looked.I took it back off and used the bracket that was supposed to rest on the axle and modified it and welded it on the end of bottom bracket to the outside of the jounce tongue to give it more support from twist. Now it looks great when 80 psi in it. Long story short, It wasn’t a quick install.

by:

Half the parts in the kit were packaged wrong. when I called to get the right stuff they figured it out and were helpful but would not expidite the shipping. Great customer service staff but poorly managed

2021 FordF-350 Super Duty

2020 ford f350 single rear wheel truck. Everything went together very easy. Had a minor hiccup with the spacing between the upper and lower bases but after calling firestone support they reassured me that the angle and spacing was fine and its better to have the bags "stretched" a little than compressed. After the install along with a compressor/tank kit and height control valve i have had no issues with the truck so far

by:
2017 FordF-350 Super Duty

Air Helper Springs were backordered and took approximately 3 weeks until I received them. The box arrived intact and all parts were inside. Due to various truck suspension configurations, I found it a little difficult to follow the instructions as some of the pictures did not properly show the parts and how everything went together. There are no torgue specifications except for one bolt. I researched on-line and found only a few details so I tightened everything to the best of the information I could find. Some of the assembly steps could have been streamlined but overall I figured it out. I feel I am very mechanically inclined and have installed many components on many vehicles. The installation time of 1-2 hours is highly optimistic unless you have installed these before and have every tool and a vehicle hoist. I have 95% of the tools necessary but used a creeper and ended up taking 8 hours because I had difficulty comparing the instructions, pictures, and making sure everything went together correctly. Some of the increased time was due to properly routing the air lines up, over, and around everything to keep them away from sharp items and keep the bends gradual. Not a difficult install but definitely took way more time than I anticipated. The first airbag took hours to figure out, the second one less than one hour. Now I will go test them out!

by:

Shipping packages damaged on a regular basis. They need to invest in some better packaging materials.

I generally don't do reviews but this company "e-trailer" and it's staff, Maria K. Martha O. George J. and Carol C. communicated continuously with me to ensure I received the correct product and as rapidly as possible. Would never hesitate to do business again.

I installed this about two weeks ago. I don’t have a lift so spent a lot of time on a crawler. Thank goodness there is sufficient underbelly height on my Silverado 2500HD.

I bought these just to remove a bit of sag when I hook up the fifth wheel. Installation was pretty easy and the instructions were fine. Although I learned from my mistakes doing the first one, which made installing the other much smoother. I haven’t had the fifth wheel hooked up yet, but I don’t think there will be any issues. I have had them inflated to 10 PSI and the haven’t lost any pressure yet. That’s with an empty bed, so we will see how they hold up with a load.

Since I didn’t get an air compressor kit with them, I was able to use two spare TPMS sensors that I had on hand to monitor the PSI of the air bags.

So far so good. etrailer service was great as usual.

by:

The Ride-Rite air helper springs work great. If I'm pulling a heavy trailer or loading my truck with a heavy load, I can add air to adjust the ride and level my truck. They really help the ride.

by:

They do not fit. The kit claims it bolts right on the 2018 transit 350HD and it does not. First thing I found is you need to drill holes in the frame, even though the packaging says bolts right on. I put the top bracket on the frame with the bouncer bolt to line up to drill the hole and found the bracket is not even the correct size - it extends too far back and hits the cross beam on the frame. see pic. I spoke with e-trailer and they confirmed I have the correct parts according to Firestone. I am sending this back and going with sumo springs .....

I install this for a customer that I have on the recommendation of etrailer as being the one that was necessary for this vehicle. On receiving the product was having problems as the truck was not set up the way that the illustration showed the truck was bought new by the original owner and had 50,000 miles and have never been modified spoke to fire stone about that at the recommendation of a trailer other parts were necessary, it turned out to be quite a mess. Mini phone calls hours of trying to make something work. The system failed at about 500 miles customer was very upset. I spoke to eat trailer no help at all referred me to fire stone no help at all. It was just to say the way things go sometimes and they were very sorry. I ended up having to give the customer his money back very expensive for me all the way around very poor recommendation on what I should’ve bought for this vehicle very poor product service by a trailer and fire stone both so end result after turning the truck back to stock, I haul the airbag system that I purchased to the dump

  • Where Should I Install the Compressor System for my Air Bags on 2020 Ford F-350
Our installation techs typically mount the compressor from a system like the Air Command II Compressor System w F3 Wireless Remote, Xtreme Duty Compressor, Tank, Hose - Dual # F2592 on the frame rails of the truck. These systems are designed to withstand the elements and the frame rail keeps enough debris from the vents that it won't affect the operation of it as long as you're not taking the truck through heavy mud and not cleaning it off.
