Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

They are fantastic! Easy installation and work flawlessly. I would purchase them again.

by:

The suspension kit works great and installed perfectly

by:

First impression are the parts look and feel top quality, excellent packaging and delivered on time. The install was somewhat difficult on the first side, trying to get the blind nuts inside the frame lined up to start threading the bolts in, but second side took 1/4 as long. Aired up the bags to about 15% to take a test drive, very impressed with the solid smooth feel of the rear suspension along with a quiet ride. Ready to tow.

by:

Product was as described. Installation video was most helpful as were the written instructions. Bending the bolt plates was absolutely necessary and was the most difficult part of the installation. I dropped one inside the frame, after retrieving, 30 minutes later, I drilled small holes in the handles and put a piece of wire thru them so they could be easily retrived if dropped again. Tested as recommended with 70 lbs of pressure and the truck's rear end popped up about 4-5 inches! Can't wait to try then with the trailer!

by:

Quick install. watch the video that is available on etrailer it is much better than the directions that come with the product. 9 Just Ordered Another One For My Neighbor.

2011 Ford F-150

Everything installed with no real problems other than the 4 bendable plates that are supplied to install the mounting bracket on the top are a POOR design. All 4 fell apart when i tried to tighten them up. Definitely need a redesign on those.

by:

Easy to install and works great!

by:

Bought to install on my dads truck. He likes to use his halfton like a one ton. Saved on tire and suspension wear and improved steering and braking while loaded. Cant complain.

Ford F-150

My first time ever-mounting the F252 in any vehicle I own. I was dubious as to whether I could install the item myself. And truthfully, installing the first (left) side took about an hour and a half. I have to say without the instructions being as clear and precise as they are, I would have given up and sent them back.
The (right) side was, I will say a "Snap". Thirty minutes more and the set was in and ready to pressure test. In conclusion, following the instructions and the will to get the job done has given me a feeling of being safer when hauling heavier loads with my F-150. The stability the F252 adds to hauling cargo and distribution of load from back suspension to front suspension makes hauling a much safer and sounder way to drive as well as carryl loads on my trailer.

Super in every way. After installing the first one the second was installed in less than 12 an hour.Mind you rhis was my first do it yourself install. Quality in performance has been very satisfying. It is recomended that 5 of air be a constant when not being needed. An ocassional check of the minimum requirement of 5 pressure keeps the air helpers functioning with no bumpiness.

by:
2013 Ford F-150

Just about everything about buying, installing and using the air suspension is 5 Star. As a novice at these things, I did have sort of an issue. I could not seem to get uniform pressure in the bags. I would think I was at say 25 and the next thing I knew it would be 15. I emailed etrailer.com and they immediately provided me a phone number for the manufacturer. One call later, I pulled out the valve stems and let some minuscule debris come out (likely from the tube cutting) and they have worked perfect every since. For the cost and effort involved, I will never be without an air suspension again.

A year,? It was somewhat over that. Anyhow the F-150 was replaced with a F-250 and new Firestone air springs were ordered in time for the newer bigger Toy Hauler. Maiden voyage to Ben Avery Phoenix and the Clark County shooting complex Las Vegas went awesome. Always do air springs and always use etrailer.

2014 Ford F-150

Good quality, easy ordering, easy install. Thankfully we had a hoist, other wise it would have been really tough.

by:

Good quality product, instructions are clear and kit was complete.

The frame-mounting with the tabs is cheezy, and quite difficult on the driver side where access hole to the frame is obstructed by wiring/hydraulic lines. I recommend a solution that only uses access from outside of frame -- like a toggle bolt... after all the torque was only 20 ft-lb.

Rcerne

6/12/2013

I agree with Rob B on the frame mounting tabs. Definitely a two person job lining up the tabs with the bolts. Other than that it was an easy install and well worth the money. If you are going to haul a heavy trailer this is by far the way to go!

Installed a set today on my 2013 F-150. Nothing about this product is cheezy. I owned a repair shop for 35 years and was impressed with the quality of this kit. A toggle bolt would not replace the steel plate firestone uses for the bracket mounting inside the frame . All in all, a first class problem solver. Lloyd Church Powell Butte, Oregon

2013 Ford F-150

The product was as advertised and installation was straight forward, especially with the video on the website. The only reason it's not 5 stars is one of the Schrader valves to fill the bags was broken In the box.the box was not packed well and heavy metal parts rolling around in the box during shipping broke the valve had to rig up a new one from a fleet store in town, which means they don't match and the no drill bracket had to drill a bigger hole to fit the new part.

Still no regrets. They hold pressure forever. Help ride quality even when NOT towing

by:
2013 Ford F-150

It was easier to install the ride rite air helper springs than to remove the wheels from my ford f 150. Note. The nuts are a type that need no lock washers. so they go on with a degree of effort. You will need an air ratchet with at least 80 fp lbs torque. Or a very large forearm. Follow the online instructions and with average mechanical skill and basic tools installation is not too difficult. Faster an easier with air tools. Shipping from E Trailer.com was better than expected. One day ahead of scheduled delivery. Ran a road test with my 29 foot trailer and felt noticeably more solid. Excellent product and supplier. PS. Get a 9/16 deeeep well socket.

2014 Ford F-150

Works great, install was relatively easy, videos from etrailer.com were a huge help. Someone asked the question if the Ford rear wheel well liners (aftermarket accessory) were compatible with this product. I can confirm that yes they are compatible, but you will need to cut about a 2" x 7" strip out of the liner around the upper frame bracket. It will be very obvious what you need to cut, and it is very simple to do (a sturdy pair of scissors or a pair of tin shears will work to make the cut). Once the frame bracket is installed and the wheel liner pushed into place above it, you won't even be able to tell it has been cut.

2013 Ford F-150

Product was as described, It arrived on time and etrailer.com did there job well with helpful videos and advise.
I would advise having a good lift to install these air springs I didn't and it was a challenge and took much longer than expected. I installed the air springs on a 2013 F150 4x4 super cab and jacked the truck up and did it from a creeper on the floor. It just took longer than I had hoped but the installation and instructions were fine and the product seems of good quality.

by:
2014 Ford F-150

After one year of owning the Firestone air bag kit I couldn't be happier!! I should have put them in before I picked up my 28 ft travel trailer. Much improved handling and very little bounce over big ruts. They never leak down. I definitely recmmend them.

by:
2009 Ford F-150

Everytime I order from eTrailer the products arrive faster and the installation gets more enjoyable. I used the air bag system to correct trailer sway and vehicle sag on my '09 F150. Putting these brackets on the suspension was awsome with only three common hand tools and the results are wonderful. I needed the adjustability of air ride to compensate for light loads when empty and of course heavy trailer weight when pulling a 20ft enclosed v-nose. This system allows me to maintain level vehicle travel with just a portable air tank and a low pressure tire PSI gauge.

by:

Installation was well documented in the instructions. It probably took me longer than some because my wheels had bonded to the hubs and would not easily release. After installation was completed, they worked very well. When not carrying a load I lower the air pressure to about 10lbs and the smoother ride is restored. I use them primarily for towing and have been very happy with them.

The ride right air bags on my f150 were great for the purpose I purchased them for was extra weight in bed of truck, 1st pair lasted 9yrs in Minnesota snow & salt also plow with this truck so I was quite satisfied with them. I have since putting on the second set of air bags sold the truck, but I know it is still performing for the new owner.

Great product, easy to install. Going to put to put them to use next weekend.

2013 Ford F-150

The product is very high quality, well built and designed. Installed easily in about an hour and a half. Watching the online video helped. Inflated them to 40 psig to start with trailer attached, still had a little bounce so I went to 50 psig. That completely cured the problem. I used a bicycle pump with a built in gauge it worked great to accurately set the pressure. Not much pumping because it is a low volume of air. It did make the ride much more firm. Set the air back to 5 psig when not towing feels like they are not even on the truck. Made the towing experience much more enjoyable. No sea sick passengers.

You will need to switch the single path gauge on system # AL25690 to a dual-path gauge to be able to control each air bag individually. You can use Firestone kit # F2145. It comes with the gauge, additional hose, fittings, and wiring plus accessories. Use it in place of the existing single-path gauge.

Please keep in mind that it is very rare for the fitting itself to leak. The leak you are referring to is generally caused by an incorrectly cut airline.
