Video Transcript for Flint Hill Goods Truck Bed Extender Review - 2022 Ford Maverick

Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Flint Hill Goods truck bed extender and seeing how it fits and works with our 2022 Ford Maverick. Now obviously the Maverick has a pretty short bed and while that can be very limiting for the types of cargo we might be carrying you can have a solution for it and that is a truck bed extender. It's going to slide into our 2" by 2" receiver tube and give us a way to extend the truck bed. It's got a couple different positions though so you can have it extended in the truck bed like this or if you have a ladder rack like we'll show you in just a bit it'll work with that too, allowing us to more evenly support any of these extended loads like lumber, ladders or a kayak like we have here. Now the extender is height adjustable.

We have it in the lowest position right now and you can see with where it sits in our hitch at that lowest position it does sit just a little bit taller than where the bottom of our bed is. So you're not gonna get a perfectly level extension but for our kayak right now, it's working just fine. I think the same can be said for any sort of lumber or ladders that you might be carrying on this as well. The extender has integrated tie down points at the top of these sidebars so we can adjust these to support our load and use our ratchet straps. They are sold separately to tie down in those spots.

Up front we're using the Maverick's factory tie down points in the bed and on our kayak with these two straps we are getting a super solid hold. Everything's pretty secure on here. I will say that the carrier does rattle around a little bit in the hitch. It doesn't come included with the hitch pin or clips so you will need to supply your own and I would maybe recommend adding on an anti-rattle device as well just to bind that up a little bit more and reduce a source of movement. As far as visibility goes, you do have reflectors on all sides of the extender plus an included flag that can attach to these adjustment pins so you can get it attached and let people know that you've got an extended load so you're hauling safely.

Some of those adjustment points we can kind of check out now are that height adjustment that I mentioned earlier. Now for me, I'd probably just be using this at the lowest height most of the time just so it's as level with my truck bed as possible. But the options are there. Something I think is maybe a little bit more useful for adjustment is the sidebars. So these can be in a little bit more or extended outward on both sides by quite a bit.

So depending on the load we have we can get it extended out here. So if we've got a lot of lumber that we wanna load up and have all of it supported side to side, we have that option. And then probably secure this pin with the quick clip on the bottom like that so it's not interfering with our load up top. Something I found really interesting is the fact that in its widest position here, it's pretty much as wide as our truck bed. It certainly extends past where these cutouts for our wheels are. So if we have anything within these two inside edges it's gonna be supported with the truck bed extender really easily. Now from our open tailgate I wanted to measure to the extender itself and that's going to be 26" from the tailgate to the inside edge here and to the furthest out point it'll be about 28 1/2"". So it does extend quite a bit from the already opened up bed. So if you have something longer, it's gonna have a good support. Now if you have a ladder rack and you want to use this with the ladder rack, it's really easy to get it swapped. So we're just gonna take out this pin and remove that height adjustable piece completely and then get this removed from our hitch. Again, remember that hitch pin and clip isn't included and then we just need to flip it around taking this end and flipping it up like this, resecuring it with whatever hitch pin and clip that you've chosen And then taking that piece we just removed and adding it up top. Now this is where your height adjustment becomes a little more useful because if you have an adjustable ladder rack or even if you have a fixed ladder rack, you can find the height of this that matches what you have already, right. There's looking pretty good for us, get it clipped in and again, an anti-rattle device would go a long way here but after we get our load strapped down, it should be a lot more stable. And now we've got a little bit of extension to our ladder rack and in this position it works really well to make sure that any extended load doesn't extend too far over our cab. Maybe we're carrying something and we don't want it to catch wind and maybe make contact with the roof. We can extend it a little bit past the end of the bed, have it supported out here and then it's not coming so close to our cab. The one thing I would point out is that depending on what you're carrying, just watch out for the antenna because with where it's placed on the Maverick, it is dead center and kind of in the way. So I'd suggest removing it if you are gonna carry anything that does extend out a little bit or depending on the height of your ladder rack, that might not even be a concern. Determining the height adjustment in this position is probably a little bit more important because depending on the ladder rack you have, you wanna make sure it's gonna work. So for those measurements, we're gonna go from the top of the shank to the top of the load bar. In its most retracted position, it'll be 55 1/8" and then in its most extended position, it'll be 63 1/4". So use that to determine how tall it's gonna sit on your truck and see if it matches up with your ladder rack. In this position though, I'd say it's working really well at keeping our load supported out here and making sure that nothing's moving. The extender is gonna have a 350 pound weight capacity and be constructed of a black powder coat steel. The powder coat's gonna help it resist rust and corrosion over time, and although it doesn't make it rustproof, it does definitely help and it gives it a nice finished look too. Overall, I think it's going to be a really solid addition to your Maverick. Like we mentioned before, the bed is not the biggest and depending on what you're carrying, a lot of times you're gonna need some sort of extra support for those elongated loads, whether it be lumber, ladders or a kayak or any other thing you might be hauling. Something like this that can be adapted to fit a ladder rack or your truck bed and give you good tie-down points is something invaluable to have. I think it works really well with the Maverick and it's something that I would certainly consider for my own truck depending on what I'm gonna be carrying. Thanks for watching.

Just what I was looking for to improve the kayak hauling experience with the short Ridgeline bed, and less bulky to store than some alternatives. Also my upcoming lumber projects. The assembly was straightforward and the rack seems durable.

by:

Actually we are using the bed extender as a brush sprayer boom support. It fits the receiver on the UTV and extends out under the bed where the sprayer sits, then hoses mount to broadcast sprayer nozzles on the uprights. Cheaper than buying a UTV boom.

I’ve been looking for this type bed extender for a while, and decided to order this one from etrailer. After using it twice, I’m very satisfied.

by:

The bed extender works great. Very useful for carrying Kayaks.

by:

The bed extender was easy to assemble and has been very useful caring lumber that's longer than the truck bed. It makes it easy to secure the end of the wood and keep things from moving around.

Very happy with the MaxxTow MaxxHaul truck bed extender. Quality and workmanship is very good, everything went together easily right out of the box without any need for me to make adjustments. I have a Honda Ridgeline which has a short bed with storage under the bed. This extender is perfect for my situation because it makes the bed more useful and the hitch breaks down into smaller pieces making it easy to store when not in use. That is one of the main reasons I bought this specific extender. Fits easily into my trunk space so its always handy. My only regret is I waited so long to purchase, I could have used it many times already.

Works great for my canoe with a few additions. I have a shortbed truck and even with the tailgate down and the canoe in diagonally, there is still too much overhang to keep the canoe situation as securely as I’d like. So I took a chance and bought the MaxxTow truck bed extender and have been very pleased.

I like how versatile it is. I can use it with roof rack on another vehicle or with my truck. All in in all it seems solidly built. It went together so easy didn’t need to refer to the instructions but I did anyway just to make sure I didn’t miss anything.
Tossed in the canoe and went to the lake. Spent a few hours and came home after dark. Since my canoe sticks a few feet back of the extender, I had tied a flag on it. Flag helps in the daytime but not much good at night but it does have the nice reflective stickers to help out.

To help out at night (and during the day) I bought a set of magnetic trailer lights and put on it. They make a huge difference for the visibility both day and night. I also went to a home improvement store and bought some pipe insulation and wrapped around the crossbars and vertical bars that the canoe will contact. All in all, including the extender, lights and insulation I have less than $100 in it all. Incredible bang for the buck.

Two kayaks, two bicycles, and a loaded truck going from Arizona to Colorado. The extender worked great with double hitch adapter for bike rack and extender. Still need to ratchet and tie everything down to control play in units.

by:

Product is exactly as described. Assembly was super easy. My application is construction materials and canoe hauling. I loaded my canoe by myself easily into the bed of my f150; tie-down was easy and the width and height adjustments worked fine.

great, stands up to all the things a farmer can throw at it.

The extender worked great on my Chevy Colorado with a 5' bed. It was simple to assemble and has a rugged & adjustable design. It worked perfect to transport my two kayaks and camping gear. One kayak is 12 feet long and the other is 9.5 feet long. My 12' kayak rested on the cross bar with a 2-3 foot overhang.....perfect. I then strap it down to the cross bars. My 9.5' kayak gets pressed and strapped up against one of the upright bars of the extender, so no way is this 9.5' kayak moving back. This hitch makes loading and unloading the kayaks much easier than a 'over the cab' kayak carriers that mount the kayaks about 7 feet off the ground. This hitch extender puts the kayaks at chest height for me now which is much easier.

by:

From 16' lumber to a pair of kayaks this item fits the bill. Easy to deploy and easy to stash when you are done.

by:

Was looking for an affordable bed extender to add kayak racks to. It allows me to easily load and unload two 12' kayaks from my short bed Toyota Tacoma. This rack does the job perfectly! etrailer is great to work with.

by:

Quality, fit, finish and packaging were excellent. Shipping rates and service were fantastic. Communication has been very good. I cannot offer any reasonable suggestions for improvement. I definitely recommend this company!

Thanks for a decal - now installed. Photo is of your bed extender with a 2018 Honda Ridgeline and Hobie tandem Eclipse kayak. That is a long kayak and the extender works great.

This product was everything advertised. I rarely order online. Probably the most inpatient person in this world. So when I'm telling you this. It's really how it was. Shipping seemed a little long for me. In reality, it probably was ahead of time. Approximately 10 days to my porch I do believe. Assembly was a breeze. Would recommend this sight to others. I hate hooking up to a trailer all the time. This will allow me to pick up longer lumber and carry bigger ladders with just my truck.

by:

Easy to assemble and hitch up to my Ford Maverick for hauling a kayak. It's an inexpensive solution to a short pickup bed. I do plan to add an anti-rattle device to cut back on the vibration. I'm pretty happy with this truck bed extender.
Also: I really like the videos etrailer makes. Very helpful!!

by:

Great way to haul big ladders without breaking the bank. Well built, easy to assemble, and easy to adjust.

by:

I’m impressed with the design and simplicity of your product. I definitely feel like I got a good deal for the cost of the Maxxhaul. Thank you for making a worthwhile product !
My daughter had to put it together just to show me she could ! LOL !!!

by:

Fast delivery, and product arrived as described. Easy to install. Well made. Works great for my 12ft ocean kayak.

by:

Very good hitch extender-easy to put together with everything fitting well. I added 2 lock washers to the lower bolt attaching the end uprights to be sure they didn't work loose. Haven't and probably won't haul anything heavy with it, but for the money it's great!!!

by:

Bought this to haul our tandem kayak. Works like a champ. Also used for lumber, ladders, timber, pipe and other materials finishing a home build. Who knew? It was a good purchase for a lot of reasons I never even considered.

My opinion is the same, a great purchase for a lot of reasons. Used it last week with the kayak and its perfect. It makes our Tundra more flexible and carries long loads more safely and securely. Get one. YOu wont regret it!

by:

Love it! Can load low or high. Very versatile! Easy installation and storage. Couldn't be happier!

by:

Arrived quickly and was just what i needed to haul a 17 foot canoe in the bed of my truck. The pieces that pin together have a little slop in them but once strapped down it doesn’t affect its performance. It’s pretty stout as well and I believe it’s capacity is advertised correctly.

by:

Easy to assemble and take apart, very solid construction and do simple to adjust... Very happy

Still working awesome, highly recommend this product

by:

Love the product. They shipped it out quickly and it arrived intact. The instructions were clear, although it’s not a terribly complicated assembly. My only complaint and why I didn’t give it 5 stars, is that the critical Steel Hitch Pin was not included. For the some inexplicable reason, this non-optional pin has to be purchased separately. So instead of heading to the lake for an afternoon of kayaking, I’m off to the big box store to see if they carry a hitch pin....

As stated in the product description, the hitch pin is indeed sold separately.

Really well! During this time of social isolation, being able to get our kayaks out on the water is a God send.

by:

Great product easy install but 1 washer was too small for the bolt
