Safety Chains Recommendation For Trailer Carrying Kayak

Question:

What is the best safety chain set up for my kayak trailer? Only one chain came with my trailer. Should I have two chains?

If you are talking about safety chains that act like a backup if the trailer should become disconnected, I recommend the Laclede Safety Chain , part # 2118-348-04. This chain is 48 inches long and features 7/16 inch hooks on both ends. They are rated Class lll and have a 5,000 lb minimum breaking strength.

If you are asking about tie-downs for your kayak on a trailer you tow behind your vehicle you will want to make sure the bow and stern are both secured.

When kayaks are carried on a roof mount rack most of the time there are two straps that secure the kayak to the carrier and bow and straps are also used to secure the kayak to the vehicle. I would want to make sure the kayak was held in place and would not risk using just one tie-down.

To prevent damage to the kayak's finish I recommend using straps like part # Y04031 instead of using chains. Chains can be abrasive and could scratch or damage your kayak. The # Y04057 includes ropes, pulleys, S-hooks, and straps.
