Unfortunately, my otherwise reliable friend decided to elope earlier this month, and will be gone until late July. So, I set about installing this Curt C12170 by myself, slowly and carefully. My CX-5 is brand new; I was very careful. I used the Lisle muffler removal tool and silicone spray. (Don’t buy a cheapie muffler tool – they snap. Go for the Lisle or better). After two days, I gave up. I made it to Step 7, but lifting the receiver into position is a two-man job. I could not lift it, move the electrical wires out of the way, and pull the bumper cover back all by myself. The Good News: My nephew dropped by July 13 and helped me install the hitch receiver. It took us about 20 minutes to lift the receiver into position, fish the bolts through, and put the front bolts into the frame finger tight. It took me another 45 minutes to tighten and torque the hardware, zip tie the electrical cables, and rehang the muffler.

Now that it is installed, it looks great. I have mounted a Draftmaster trike rack and they function well together.

I managed to complete the install without drawing blood!
I installed it without help and without the cx5 off the garage floor. It wasn’t as easy as it would have been with a helper but I got it.
All the holes aligned perfectly and all the bolts were exact.
Now I need the wiring harness which I thought came with the hitch I ordered but not so. I’m sure I read things wrong or simply ordered the wrong one.

Thats awesome about the install - bet it feels nice to do that yourself! Glad it went well! Also, wiring harnesses are sold separately. Part # TK85VR is what you would need if you still need one.

Pretty straight forward installation. A little maneuvering required and minor interpretations to directions depending on vehicle year. This is on a 2015 Mazda CX-5 and will be used for a bike rack and luggage rack. Very pleased with my purchase.

Still going strong. I has been used with a cargo carrier and regularly carries a bike rack.

I'm a healthcare provider with minimal mechanical experience and was able to follow the videos and instructions to complete the installation without issue. The hitch on my 2016 CX-5 has towed my 16' aluminum boat well and I couldn't be more satisfied.

2024 MazdaCX-5

I just bought a 2024 Mazda CX5 Premium. I was going to have the dealer install the Mazda Class I hitch. The hitch and wiring installation cost was going to run over $1100 + tax. I had installed a similar hitch from etrailer 10 years ago on my Chrysler 200. That install went smoothly so I figured I'd do it again. Ordered the class II a few days ago and it showed up yesterday. Installed it today. At age 70 and installing this thing solo definitely took longer than I anticipated. I had to be creative in the process but the end result is terrific. etrailer provides exact fit hitches that look great, out of the box and after installation. I am thoroughly pleased with the service and products from these folks. Two thumbs up to your company.

2023 MazdaCX-5

This is a very nice hitch & the directions were very good. But it took me at least 2 hours to install. The hardest part was getting the holes lined up and the carriage bolts through. It's possible that I didn't have all of the tape cut away so threading it through the hole was difficult.

by:
2017 MazdaCX-5

First time self installer without professional equipment (car lift, power tools, etc.) should anticipate more than 20-40 minutes installation time. Well built, quality product that fits perfectly. I ordered the hitch through their customer service. Vanessa was very knowledgeable, answered all my questions and was helpful in making the right choice. The hitch arrived promptly. The etrailer video installation instruction was very helpful which I followed over the factory instructions. I installed the hitch in my garage, on the floor and by myself which took about 90 minutes. I would recommend having a helper which would likely reduce the installation time.

by:

My order came quickly via UPS; the package was in good condition at delivery. The hitch was packaged carefully and all the parts were there. The instructions were complete but could have had more clearer illustrations that were easier to read. The install wasn't difficult and I was able to do it in an hour with a set of extra hands. Overall, the product is well made and worth the money spent. I also purchased a Tee wiring harness. I either missed the description or it wasn't there but a note about whether you need a POWERED or unPOWERED connection depending on your needs would have helped. I fortunately purchased the correct one.

by:

Purchased this specifically to mount a platform bicycle carrier on a Mazda CX-5. I did not install it myself so cannot speak to the ease of install, but I have had no complaints as a user over the past year.

by:

Very pleased with the look and quality of the trailer hitch receiver from Trailer. The hitch was delivered 2 days after I placed the order. Etrailer earned my future business as they were very professional and responsive.

2023 MazdaCX-5

Fit perfectly. The step by step video guide is most helpful and I knew exactly what to expect before I started the job. Thanks for the help

by:

The hitch arrived very poorly packaged with holes in nearly every side of the box. The hitch itself was covered in scratches and the corners that were hanging through the holes in the box were dinged with the coating worn through. It’s a shame because the hitch itself seems to be good quality but it was packaged very poorly with no padding. So much for having a corrosion resistant coating.

Thanks for reaching out. I will have Customer Service reach out to you about the scratches on the hitch. If the hitch is needed right away, I recommend touching up the hitch with a rust resistant paint like Rustoleum.

Quick install and good instructions. Fifth one I’ve done so far.

My CX-5 has the optional trim on the rear valence. I thought this might need to be removed based on comments about Grand Touring trim needing to be removed. It fit fine.

My Curt Hitch is perfect in fit, finish and application. It solves the
problem of transporting and launching a 15' Alumacraft fishing boat. etrailer's price and advice are better by far than others, and include
excellent instructions plus videos if needed. This is a well engineered
product sold by very detail orientated professionals. I can honestly
say that I'm thrilled to find etrailer and highly recommend them.

2022 MazdaCX-5

I just installed this hitch on a Mazda 2023 cx5. It came just after lunch and my wife and I installed it in just little over an hour. Even though web page did not show it fitting a 2023 I checked with the Mazda dealer because I had the same hitch on a 2020 cx5 and they said no frame changed so I gave it a shot. No issues. I ordered it on Monday from trailer and install on Wednesday. Dealer is great to work with and their install video's are great.

Very fast shipping and delivered earlier than expected. This hitch fits my 2016 CX-5 perfectly. Had it installed by one of the recommended installers. If you're from Orange county in CA, bring your hitch for installation to Taylor's Trim. Tell Bobby Roy sent you (I hope he'd remember me).

Fit my Mazda cx-5 perfectly. Great service & website.

by:

After a year it looks good as new. Awe some!

by:

I installed this trailer hitch to my new 2020 CX5. It took about 2-3 hours to install the complete hitch and wiring. I followed the video on installation and how to wire. No special tool require other than a torque wrench. now you may think this was a long time to install. but I am older than 75. Great Hitch!

by:

Having had a Curt custom hitch on my previous vehicle, I ordered one for my new 2020 CX-5, expecting similar quality. As before, the installation instructions were clear and easy to follow. The hitch fit perfectly, holes lined up exactly where they needed to be, and the finish seems to be even better than my previous one, appearing to be a heavy, baked-on powder coating. After a year it still looks great and although I don't pull a trailer frequently, it's nice to have it there for when I do. I couldn't be happier with this product!

  • Best Hitch and Cargo Carrier for a 2021 Mazda CX-5
I would be happy to help you find a cargo carrier and set your 2021 Mazda CX-5 up with a new trailer hitch. It is our must subtle looking hitch after install and the sleek design leaves only the receiver visible. The crossbar is concealed behind the rear trim for a factory look. There are a few differences between the Curt Hitch - 1/4" # C12170 and the Curt Hitch - 2" # C13315 for your 2021 Mazda CX-5. First off, we need to consider the hitch opening sizes. The # C12170 has a 1-1/4 inch opening while the # C13315 has a 2-inch opening. This is important because the opening determines what accessory compatibility you will have (since accessories are compatible by hitch receiver sizes). This also contributes to the difference in weight capacity for both hitches. The...

It's a warranty situation for the Curt hitch. It's not that the Draw Tite is necessarily stronger than the Curt it's just that they approach the idea of carrying a non-supported load more cautiously than Draw Tite. The only thing is that for your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 there is only the Curt hitch part # C12170 that is confirmed as a fit so you would have to use the # 18050 with a bike rack. Realistically Draw Tite will eventually have a hitch fit for your vehicle, but at this time we are still...
