2011 Subaru Impreza

I have no complaints about the hitch itself, but installing on my 2011 Impreza hatchback has been a massive headache and some important details for my car were not well covered in the videos. Fishing the bolts through the frame rails was a breeze once I enlarged the holes, and attaching the hitch itself is straightforward if you have someone hold it steady for you. But getting the exhaust out of the way and putting it back in place was much more of an issue on my car than the videos make it out to be, especially with the car on jack stands rather than a lift.

I watched the '09 Impreza video many times and followed it carefully. When I thought I had everything done and just needed to reattach the exhaust, I realized there was no way to get it back into position because it was blocked by the hitch. As another reviewer mentioned but I didn't pick up on until now, I needed to raise the muffler along with the hitch when installing (you can see this in the video, but they don't say anything about it). So I had to undo what I thought was nearly a finished product and am now stuck with a non-drivable car until I can get someone to help do it all over again, and then take on the task of squeezing the exhaust back into all its hangers.

If I could go back, I would no doubt have my local shop install this for me, even though it was going to cost $300. At the time that seemed exorbitant, but now it sounds worth every penny...

This hitch was easy to install. My primary use for the hitch will be for the use of a bike rack and cargo tray. I installed it by myself with the aid of jack stands. One tip I have to make the installation easier if you are installing this without any help is to use zip ties to hold the bolts in place. I took zip ties and notched them towards the head and then zip tied them to the bolts sticking out of the frame. This kept the bolts from accidentally getting pushed back into the frame rails. Once I had the nuts loosely threaded, a good tug on the zip ties broke them loose.

The trailer hitch is holding up well. I use it mainly to attach a cargo rack and a bike rack, which is in need of replacement. The finish is still like new. Thanks for checking back with me, that’s great customer service.

This was installed on a 2011 Subaru Impreza outback sport. It fit well. A bit of the exhaust needed to be loosened to get it into place. The installation required the bolts be fished thought the frame. (that was difficult) an alternate easier way is to open the well in the trunk. From above the frame, drill out one hole on each side to enlarge it to just fit the bolts. Drop the bolts in from above using the supplied spring wire tool. Picture 1 is the hole enlarged. I should have used the drill bits in picture 2. Do not over size the holes any more than needed.....

2009 Subaru Outback Wagon

etrailer pricing, ordering and delivery were first rate. This hitch, promoted as a custom fit for my 2009 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, was installed by my regular auto body shop, a highly experienced and very reputable outfit. It was they who recommended the Curt model purchased. Hitch installation time was advertised as 30 minutes, but the shop said the installation was a bit tricky and took over an hour due to the complexity of using the fishing wire, lowering the exhaust, expanding some holes and making sure everything remained in place. They installed successfully and were happy to do so, though it gave them a story to tell. The hitch appears very solid. I'm looking forward to attaching a hitch mounted bike rack, the RockyMounts Monorail Solo, to take my e-bike with me to great riding places.

2010 Subaru Impreza

Excellent product. Once the plugs were out, just had to enlarge the holes closer to the front of the car. Fishing the items through wasn't tough, except that I made a little mistake and basically 'overthreaded' the bolts onto the fish wire. By doing this (luckily it was on the last bolt) a piece got caught on the underside of the frame rail and I had to yank it out (basically rending that fishing wire useless). So although you want to make sure the fishing wire is threaded, be sure not to overthread either.

Actually getting the bolt to pull through the plate was rather easy. When it came to fishing the bolts closer to the front of the car, these were a piece of cake due to the larger hole and that you only needed to fish the bolt right back through the backing plate.

On our 2010 Impreza wagon we did have to cut off one of the exhaust hangers (the one closest to rear of the car on the driver's side)as it just wouldn't fit once we had the hitch bolted on. There were 3 other exhaust hangers (and the one by the rear axle) so no worries of the muffler hanging down.

It is a quite heavy piece and you want to be sure not to push the bolts back into the frame rails, so I had a helper assist me while it was on the lift to make sure we had it lined up (we did one side at a time and hand-tightened the bolts). We then tightened them as per the torque specs in the install guide and put the muffler back on.

All in all a great product, and took about 1.5 hours to put in (I took my time and referenced the video a few times).

by:

Excellent trailer hitch, and relatively easy to install with a few caveats:
1. The fishing of the bolts through the frame is a little hair raising at times, and would have been helped by having the car jacked up.
2. It is more than a 50 minute install and requires more than one person to lift and hold the pretty heavy (see solid) bumper into position.
3. Bolts are pretty tight and require nimble hands to fish them in around the exhaust and piping.
Otherwise the product performs just as advertised and I am a very happy camper. Great product.

Subaru

This was a great buy and exactly what I needed! Super durable quality and only took about an hour to install by myself. I purchased this to haul motorcycles behind my little Subaru and it works great.
Top tip: use a floor jack to hold it up if installing alone. makes the job very safe and easy.

by:

So far so good. I haven't actually used it yet but it sure looks good. I was planning on doing the installation myself but had no ramps so I had Uhaul install it for $55 - well worth it. I did, however, do all the wiring myself. Took me a few hours but everything went smoothly.

The product arrived ahead of schedule. I had it installed by rack solid. It is great for my bike rack.

Subaru Outback Wagon

I ordered a hitch for my subaru outback Impreza sport. My costumer service experience was great. All the information I needed to know was discussed before hand to be sure that I was buying the right hitch. I ordered the hitch and it arrived at its destination less than 5 days of ordering it. I would definitely do business with Curt again and highly recommend them.

by:
2010 Subaru Impreza

I am happy with this hitch now that I have it installed. However, it is worth noting that for the 2010 Subaru Impreza (non-wrx), the hitch needs to be installed simultaneously with the muffler, and if the muffler is ever removed the hitch will have to come out. I suspect that other hitches with sides that are more straight down will not have this problem. I have no idea what other vehicles will be like, but suspect they will be the same unless they have a narrower muffler.

by:

Product arrived safely and on time. Installation was easy to do with a helping hand. Looks great on my car and i'm very excited to attach a platform bike rack. Thank you, etrailer!

by:

You can buy these hitches anywhere but etrailer has exceptional price and service! This is my third one from them. (Different vehicles). All fit perfectly I always go with Curt.

Great fit and finish, looks great on the 2008 subaru impreza hatchback. Thank you etrailer for great customer service and the videos help a lot when installing. I will order from you guys again!!

Hve not mounted th hitch yet. Will have it done professionally to avoid mistakes. Came very quickly., Delivered two hitches due to an oredering glitch from the billing department. Factory sent UPS return for free. All personnel courteous & professional. I'm confident that I'll be happy with the product.

by:

Hitch went on very easily. The only difficult part was re-attaching the exhaust hangers. I was suprised at the weight of the hitch and the build quality appears to be very good.

  • Trailer Hitch for 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon Special Edition
Curt offers two different hitches for the 2009 Subaru Outback, the Class II # C12284 you referenced which fits all models of the 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon with the exception of the Sport Model. The Class I # C11315 will fit 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon Sport models with a single exhaust. Curt has no other fit exclusions for the 2009 Outback. As long as your 2009 Outback Wagon SE isn't a Sport Model with Dual Exhaust, there's a hitch availble.

  • Trailer Hitch for 2011 Subaru Outback Impreza Sport
The Curt receiver hitch item # C11315 you were looking at will fit your 2011 Subaru Outback Impreza Sport so long as you have the single exhaust. This hitch receiver is custom fit, designed specifically for your vehicle, and requires no welding. It has a 2000 lbs towing capacity and a 200 lbs max tongue weight. If your Subaru Outback has the quad exhaust, I recommend the Curt receiver hitch item # C11120. This is an equivalent hitch receiver from the same manufacturer it just accommodates...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport
For your 2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, # C11315, that you have referenced, because it has a slightly lower install difficulty than the other available hitches. We base install difficulty on how long it takes to install a hitch and the Curt hitch is a 5 out of 10. This means for a novice it should take about 50 minutes to install the hitch. This is a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening capable of 200 pounds tongue weight capacity...

Since you have stated you want access to your rear cargo area on your Subaru Outback, I would suggest a hitch mounted bike rack. I would recommend the Curt 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount - Tilting # C18085. You will need to get a new hitch for your 2013 Subaru Impreza, the Curt Hitch # C11315 that you referenced is only designed to work on Imprezas from 2008-2011 so it would not work for your 2013 even though they look similar. I would recommend the Curt Hitch # C11286 if you have a hatchback with single exhaust, Curt Hitch # C11120 if you have a hatchback WRX with quad tip exhaust, or Curt Hitch # C11317 if you have a Sedan WRX.
