2013 Chevrolet Volt

This hitch did not work for my application. I have the Thule T2 Rear hitch rack and it isn't safe with this receiver. These are the reasons I say this.
1. It sits too low even with the MaxxHaul 80875 1-1/4" to 2" Hitch Adapter With 4" Rise and 3-3/8" Drop. I bought that to raise it up so rack wouldn't drag. It also gets it around the rear bumper.
2. The hitch receiver itself drags on any low bump or backing down drive if you live on hill. I had both these problems.
3. Once you load up one 28lb MTB and drive the rack sways and jostles around
feeling like it has too much leverage giving a very unsafe feeling. I didn't even try to load on 2 bikes.
4. I bought Winnerwell Anti Rattle Hitch Tightener for 1.25" and 2" Hitches
to try to take out the slop. It did a fantastic job of stopping the extreme
swaying I was getting.
5. Even with all these improvements I still think this set-up isn't safe for regular MTB's. I wouldn't even consider using it for a 50lb eMTB.
I'm unhappy with it because it's mounted now and I do not want to use because I worry it will damage or actually break with two 28lb bikes on it.
My solution and what I should have originally bought is to suck it up and pay twice the price for a really adequate hitch like this one. EcoHitch Invisi Trailer Hitch Receiver Custom Fit - 2". It looks harder to install but looks much more robust and is mounted to the bumper structure.
I would suggest spending more and getting the proper receiver. I feel like I now have a useless (for my uses) receiver attached to my car.

Nice solid hitch receiver. Straight forward install the only problem I had was the crud in the weld nuts. I have a 2012 and neither of the hex bolts would thread by hand. I wish the brush was included because it took me over an hour to spray and work the bolts in very carefully. Maybe a newer model year Volt wouldn’t need the brush but 8 years and 100k miles really gunked up those threads. I’d recommend watching the video on this install as well, because the diagram for cutting the trim wouldn’t have resulted in such a nice fit. It’s not dead center on that screw like in the instructions.

Super happy with the hitch for my 2013 Volt. I see all the other Volt people looking in amazement as I tote my bikes around ;-D

by:

Love the hitch, now I can use my bike rack!
Fits perfectly as shown on video/instructions. Total installation time, took me about 2 hrs.

by:

I'm not very mechanical but this was a breeze, just a few screws for bumper removal and drill 2 holes for trailer plate and your done!

by:

Great Tow hitch, no issues after 1 year

2014 Chevrolet Volt

Everything was in the hardware kit and it was easy to install. The instructions on cutting the plastic cover must have been written for the 2011 Volt. My 2014 cover required cutting in several places not the two shown.

Still working well, very good engineering.

Absolutely love my hitches, I ordered one for a 2011 Chevy volt, and one for a 2021 Prius Prime. I use them daily with bike racks. My husband installed them in the driveway without a ‘hitch”... get it? Anyhoo, happy happy happy 100% recommend.

2013 Chevrolet Volt

Installation not too bad. I was in no hurry and it took a couple of hours. Of course the instructions didn't tell me everything. The interior pan took some wiggling and forcing to come loose. The splash panel underneath had two screws holding it that weren't mentioned, in the right rear wheel well. I would have had to remove the wheel to get to them, so I left them in and worked around the loose panel. It was a little frightening drilling a big hole through the steel pan, but the all four bolt holes lined up well. The instructions showed two areas for trimming the splash panel, but I found that just one area for the receiver was enough. I'm confident the hitch will support my bike rack. It's pretty solid. I'm a little concerned about low clearance, we'll see how that goes.

I have had my trailer hitch for a year and had no trouble with it. I have only used it for a bike rack so far, but it seems to be doing fine.

by:
Chevrolet Volt

Results in a very attractive and functional hitch for bikes.

I would provide the following tips.

1. The holes in the frame of the Volt with the threaded nuts are inside the body pan so you won't see them until you remove the body pan.

2. I would not measure and drill the fourth mounting hole. I would mount the hitch using the three holes that do not require drilling, adjust the hitch so it is dead center on the rear backup light and square. Cinch up the hitch so it won't move and use the fourth hole in the hitch as the drill guide. You will have to drill from the bottom up but you will perfectly locate the fourth hole this way.

3. Trimming the bottom cover plate is intuitive enough for the receiver cutout but not so for the other cutout that clears the hitch frame mounting plate. The pictures are hard to interpret and actually seem reversed. It may be easier to cut out for the receiver then put the pan back in place to see what needs to be done to cutout to clear the the hitch mounting plate.

I've been using this hitch for a year with no problems. Installation was very straightforward. Using a trailer to tow a boat is so much easier than car-topping. I wish I'd done this sooner!

by:

Always been happy with E-Trailer. Ordered a half dozen hitches over the years for various vehicles... always good instructions and spot on design. Thanks!

Good product but will need a lift of some type to get under a volt for installation.

After one year the hitch has worked great for carrying my bike.

by:
2012 Chevrolet Volt

Arrived quickly and was well packed. The instructions were clear, but the diagram of where to cut the underside panel were reversed, but easy to figure out. Installation was pretty easy. I did it by myself and it was awkward to lift the hitch and get the nuts threaded. With a helper, it would be very easy. Very satisfied.

by:
2011 Chevrolet Volt

Interesting design in itself. The odd shape is due to the fact that one side mounts on the unibody frame and the opposite side ties into the trunk pan. I recommend ensuring your Chevy Volt has the weld nuts in the unibody frame on the passenger side before purchasing otherwise this job will be far more difficult. Installation took approximately 35 minutes.

Thank you

The trailer hitch I got for my Chevy Bolt fit and has performed flawlessly.

by:

Easy install, my only complaint is the ball mount does not have enough of a rise

by:

Installation video was very helpful and the hitch has held up well for the past year.

by:
2013 Chevrolet Volt

liked the product, there were few minor inaccuracies but those did not deter me from installing the hitch smoothly. four bolts make it secure enough to hold the bike, I'd recommend.

by:
2012 Chevrolet Volt

Product was as described, arrived quickly and went on with a minimum of fuss. As others have described, there is more than one place the bottom facia panel will need to be trimmed for it to align correctly for proper re-attachment.

by:

Excellent product and timely delivery. Only problem was the pictures demonstrating the 2 cut outs on the under panel were mirror images of the actual panel, and I had to use my imagination to reverse them in my mind.

by:

Fantastic supplier, web site and produc t.

by:

Fit well and installed easily with the video

by:

Excellent price. Fast Shipping. Good fit. Easy to follow instructions.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2011 Chevrolet Volt
The correct trailer hitch for your 2011 Chevrolet Volt is the Curt # C11221. This hitch receiver is a Class I and has a gross trailer weight of 1,000 pounds and a tongue weight of 100 pounds. If you also need trailer wiring the correct harness for your Volt is # C59496. For a ball mount # C45521 and for a hitch ball either # A-82 for a 2 inch or # A-80 for a 1-7/8 inch. Finally, # F-4 for a pin and clip.

  • Curt Hitch Fit 2011 Chevrolet Volt
The Curt Class I Receiver Hitch # C11221 is confirmed to fit your 2011 Chevrolet Volt. This trailer hitch offers a 1-1/4 inch receiver, with a 100 pound tongue weight and 1,000 pound towing capacity. Drilling is required to install the hitch and then the hitch will bolt to the frame with the included hardware. The Curt warranty for this hitch requires all non-trailer loads to be supported with a support strap, # 18050.

  • Trailer Hitch Installation on A 2013 Chevrolet Volt With Rusted Weld Nuts
When installing a The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4 inch # C11221 on a frame that the weld nuts are rusted out will require some special attention. First you should spray a penetrating lubricant like WD40 into the nuts and allow it to work overnight. You can repeat this step for a few days if you have the time. Then you would need to use a tube brush # 814113 to help clean out the threads. This may require several solvent applications and brush cleanings to...

  • Installing Hitch On 2011 Chevrolet Volt When Frame Rail Weldnuts Are Missing
I am not sure if I would label it lucky. I called my contact at Curt and they told me that they have some cases where the car manufacturer did not have the weldnuts on the frame rail. Please note that there will only be weldnuts on the passenger side and not on the driver side of the Volt to install the # C11221 trailer hitch. There is a way you can install the hitch. You would need to go to your local hardware store and get a couple 7/16 inch x 1-3/4 inch long grade 8 carriage bolts,...

  • Location of Curt Class I Hitch # C11221 on 2012 Chevrolet Volt For Hitch Bike Rack
We have not had the opportunity to install the Curt Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # C11221, on a 2012 Chevrolet Volt at this time. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Curt hitch that will show good pictures of where the hitch is located on the Volt in relation to the backup light. It looks like it is located right underneath the backup light. If you will be using this hitch to carry a bike rack you will need to make sure and choose a bike rack that is designed...

  • Can You Carry Two 50 Lb Bikes on a 2012 Chevy Volt with Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11221 which is a fit for a 2012 Chevrolet Volt only has a 100 lb tongue weight rating so you can't haul two 50 lb bikes since the weight of the rack which also needs to be included would exceed the hitch's rating. That said, we do have another option for you with higher rating in the EcoHitch Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7180 which has a 300 lb tongue weight rating. I know it's quite a bit more expensive but it also has a unique feature...

  • Differences Between Trailer Hitch Options for 2014 Chevy Volt
The 100 lb figure you mention for the Curt # C11221 is actually the tongue weight capacity of the hitch, which is the maximum amount of downward force that could safely be applied to the trailer ball. Typically the tongue weight of a given trailer is between 10 and 15% of its fully loaded weight. Given that your trailer weighs a maximum of 400 lbs, the most tongue weight you'd likely see is 60 lbs, which is well within the capacity of the Curt # C11221. The EcoHitch # 306-X7180 and #...

For the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11221 on your 2013 Chevrolet Volt, I recommend taking a look at the RockyMounts HighNoon FC Solo Bike Rack for 1 Bike # RKY87RR. This an excellent option for your Volt and retains the same wheel mount design as the Kuat Transfer.

  • Trailer Hitch Installation on a 2013 Chevy Volt
I have always liked the Chevy Volt. I like the tail lights and look of the rear end. We have not had the chance yet to install Curt trailer hitch # C11221 on a 2013 Chevy Volt. But if you are near Wentzville, Missouri we would love to have the vehicle in to do some test fits! I have included a link to the installation instructions for you though. • Recommended Bike Rack for Step-Thru Electric Bike on 2013 Chevy Volt
None of the trunk-mounted bike racks that fit your 2013 Chevy Volt will allow you to open the trunk with the rack on. Each would also require you to use an adapter bar - which attaches to the rack - for a bike with a step-thru frame. Additionally, trunk-mounted racks are not a good option for electric bikes because they do not have the weight capacity necessary to support an electric bike. That said, there is a way for you to avoid using an adapter bar and have access to your Volt's trunk,...

  • Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for a 2012 Chevy Volt
Since the 2012 Chevy Volt is not typically used as a tow vehicle there hasn't been much of a demand for a t-connector style trailer wiring harness. As of right now, and for the foreseeable future, the only wiring option you have would be a universal install harness like the part # C56496. For a hitch you would want part # C11221. Ball Mount part # C45521, 1-7/8 inch ball # A-80. Lastly, check your owners manual to see if there are any restrictions on towing with your vehicle.

  • Availability of a 2-Inch Hitch Receiver for the 2014 Chevrolet Volt for Use With a 2-Inch Bike Rack
The Curt Class I Hitch Receiver for the 2014 Chevrolet Volt, part # C11221, is the only hitch offered for your vehicle. This hitch has a 1-1/4-inch receiver opening and has a rated tongue weight capacity (the downward force on the hitch) of 200-lbs. A Class I hitch can carry only 2 bikes. There are no 2-inch hitches available for your vehicle and it is unlikely that any will be offered in the future. Hitch makers base their hitch designs on the vehicle's own frame capacity and if only...

  • Availability of 2 Inch Receiver for 2012 Chevy Volt
The Curt Class I hitch you mentioned, part # C11221 is for a 2011-2014 Chevy Volt. Due to the small size of the vehicle and the structure of the rear of the vehicle, there is only a Class I hitch with the 1-1/4 inch by 1-1/4 inch receiver opening available. A 2 inch receiver is unfortunately not available. Since the vehicle would use a Class I hitch, the best practice would be to use a hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack or cargo carrier that is Class I compatible (see link). Using...

There are only certain hitch mounted cargo carriers that will work with the Class I trailer hitch, # C11221, for your 2014 Chevy Volt. The Carpod # M2200 only fits in a 2 inch receiver found on Class III and larger hitches. Since the Class I hitch has a 1-1/4 inch receiver the Carpod will not fit but we do have other carriers that will. • Is a Trailer Hitch Available for the 2015 Chevy Volt
We do carry a trailer hitch for the 2015 Chevy Volt. The Curt Hitch part # C11221 has very low towing capacities though at 100 lbs tongue weight and 1,000 lb total trailer weight. You would first need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to see if any towing is recommended at all, but at the very least you would have to go with a lighter trailer so as not to exceed the Curt capacities.

  • 2013 Chevrolet Volt Tongue Weight Capacity With the Curt Class I Hitch
The tongue weight rating of the Curt Class I Hitch # C11221 is 100 lbs. This means the max weight of anything installed in the receiver opening is 100 lbs. For an example, with a hitch mounted bike rack, the total weight of the bike rack and the bikes cannot exceed 100 lbs. Because of the light weight capacity of your hitch and car, I recommend a rack like the NEO2 # B01748. The BikeWing has a total weight of 15 lbs. This rack can carry two bikes with weight capacity of 40 lbs per bike....
