Recommended Bike Rack for Step-Thru Electric Bike on 2013 Chevy Volt

Question:

I am looking for a trunk mounted bike rack for a 2013 chevy volt. I have a step thru electric bike. Is there any trunk mounted rack that accepts a step thru bike without an adapter? Or at least one that the adapter is mounted once to the rack instead of mounting to the bike each time. Can you still open the trunk with the bike rack installed with a bike installed - I realize the trunk will be heavier and the bike hanging over head will limit access? Can you open the trunk without a bike installed? Since the installation describes the lower bar resting on the bumper its not clear if you can still open the trunk. Thanks

None of the trunk-mounted bike racks that fit your 2013 Chevy Volt will allow you to open the trunk with the rack on. Each would also require you to use an adapter bar - which attaches to the rack - for a bike with a step-thru frame. Additionally, trunk-mounted racks are not a good option for electric bikes because they do not have the weight capacity necessary to support an electric bike.

That said, there is a way for you to avoid using an adapter bar and have access to your Volt's trunk, though the catch is your electric bike cannot weigh more than 60 lbs. To do this you would need to install Curt trailer hitch # C11221, which is the only available hitch for your 2013 Volt. This is a Class I hitch that has a tongue weight capacity of just 100 lbs, which means the most your electric bike and bike rack can weigh is 100 lbs.

The lightest wheel-mounted bike rack (which will negate the need for an adapter bar) which has enough capacity for an electric bike is the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 1 Bike # KU64FR, which is compatible with a Class I hitch, weighs just 26 lbs and has a weight capacity of 60 lbs.

The Transfer will also tilt down, even with your bike loaded, with a simple push of a foot pedal, which is going to let you open your trunk to access your cargo. It has an built-in anti-rattle mechanism to keep the noise minimal while driving and integrated cable lock for your bikes. It comes with a simple pin and clip to secure the rack to your hitch. But, if you'd like extra security, I recommend adding the Kuat hitch lock # HLT. I've added links to video reviews of both the hitch and rack for you to check out.
