Can You Carry Two 50 Lb Bikes on a 2012 Chevy Volt with Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver
Question:
Good morning, I want to buy a Curt 11221 hitche and in the specifications it says that the maximum weight on the tongue is 100 lbs. can I put a 50 lbs bike rack and 2 bikes of 50 lbs each?

Expert Reply:
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11221 which is a fit for a 2012 Chevrolet Volt only has a 100 lb tongue weight rating so you can't haul two 50 lb bikes since the weight of the rack which also needs to be included would exceed the hitch's rating. That said, we do have another option for you with higher rating in the EcoHitch Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7180 which has a 300 lb tongue weight rating. I know it's quite a bit more expensive but it also has a unique feature in that you can remove the receiver when not towing for a factory finish. It also has a larger receiver, 2" versus the 1-1/4" on the Curt which will give you a lot more bike racks to choose from such as the Kuat NV 2.0 Base Bike Rack for 2 Bikes part # BA22B or the more cost effective Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes part # KU84FR.
