Video Transcript for Curt Heavy Duty Forged Ball Mount Review C43JR

What we're looking at here at etrailer is the Curt heavy-duty forged ball mount. So these are gonna come in a couple different configurations when it comes to rise and drops. This one has a drop of 4 inches and it's gonna have an optional rise of 2 1/2 inches. So if we wanted to, we can take this ball off, flip it upside down, and then flip the whole entire ball mount, just depends on what you're really hauling. Comes with a 2 5/16 inch ball. So just make sure that lines up and is the right size for the coupler on your trailer, and we're gonna have a gross trailer weight capacity of 20,000 pounds.

So this thing is pretty beefy, comparing them to some of the other non-forged ball mounts. That's what really sets this apart from some of the other ones on our site, it's really, really heavy and it is extremely tough. So for those heavier trailers that you may be hauling is gonna be the way to go. But since it's not a hollow piece here, it's just all forged, we're not gonna really be able to put any anti-rattle threaded hitch pin or anything like that in there, and it doesn't come with a hitch pin. So when you do pick one, just make sure it's a 5/8 inch in diameter, because there's not a whole lot of play whenever we get this in there, so we really want that pin to be nice and tight in there so there's not any play and that's just going to prevent any unnecessary wear.

But if you did want to prevent that, which is just the rattling, there is one thing we could do and it's pretty much just an anti-rattle device that kind of wraps around and puts pressure down on our hitch, so you're not gonna hear this whenever you're going. But on our Ram right now, sometimes the bumper kind of gets in the way, but just know we do have an option for you if you did want to completely secure this to the inside of your hitch so you don't hear that rattling down the road. The ball comes with it and it is already installed on the ball mount. It's already torqued to spec. So if you did want to swap this around, you're gonna have to put this thing in a vise, loosen this, swap it around.

But if you did want to change sizes, if you had a 2 inch coupler on one of your trailers, all you need to do is the shank that goes through the hole, we wanna make sure it's gonna have a diameter of a inch and 1/4, nothing more, it won't fit, and anything less, there'll be a little bit too much play, so it's not gonna be the safest on the road. But we do have a lot of different balls on our website, so just grab the one that fits in the hole properly and you'll be good to go. This one right here is chrome plated. So over time, if you don't really grease this, I have seen them start to rust away over time. So keep that in mind.

You might see it if you don't maintain it. So we do have grease on our website as well. So grab some of that if you wanna keep it nice and shiny for its life. Another thing that gives us such a big capacity and a 2000 pound tongue weight is there's not a whole lot of distance between our hitch and the center of our ball. So from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the center of our ball's gonna be about 8 3/4 of an inch. It's pretty short. So that is gonna help keep that larger capacity we're really wanting with this truck. This is a good entry-level ball mount for your truck. If you have a 2 1/2 inch hitch, that's all you really need to be able to use this ball mount, and 2 1/2 inch hitches, typically the trucks that they're on are a little bit taller, so I think the 4 inch drop is pretty much perfect. The truck that we're on right now has a stock suspension and stock wheels and tires and it still sits up a little tall. So with the 4 inch drop, I think it's gonna be a great option for you. If you really wanted to go to the next level, a more premium option, I always like the B&W Tow and Stows. They usually have one or even three different size balls on there and it only takes a pin and a couple minutes to get it all adjusted and swapped around. With this, we're gonna need a vice and we have to take this off and then torque it back down to spec. It's kind of a lot of work. So if you are one that hauls different trailers with different size couplers, you might want to go with the more premium option and B&W is my pick, but when it comes to this, I think it's gonna be a great option for you. It's a very entry-level way to do it. And I do think that the rise and the drop with the capacity is a great choice for whatever this truck's gonna be hauling. And that's pretty much it for our look at the Curt heavy-duty forged 2 1/2 inch ball mount..

  • What 4" Drop Hitch do You Recommend for a 2-1/2" Hitch and a 2-5/16" Ball Coupler?
Yes! We have the exact 4" drop ball mount you need for your application. For the perfect fit, I recommend the Curt Heavy Duty Forged Ball Mount for 2-1/2" Hitch - 2-5/16" Ball # C43JR. To go along with the mount, if you need a great locking hitch pin to protect the mount from theft, that is the etrailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" and 2-1/2" Hitches - Flush - 3-5/8" Span # e98881.

  • Can Curt Ball Mount with Mounted Hitch Ball be Used in Rise Position
Hey Fred, yes you could remove the ball of the Curt ball mount part # C43JR, flip the ball mount over, and then reinstall the ball to use it as a rise ball mount instead. For basically the exact same thing but for a 2 inch hitch you would want the Curt ball mount part # C45332.

  • Ball Mount that Works with Chevy Multipro Tailgate Folded Down
Based on how tight of clearance there is between the MultiPro tailgate and the rear hitch of the new Chevy trucks I can tell the Curt ball mount part # C43JR would not work with it. Best option is the B and W Tow and Stow part # BWTS20066BMP which was designed to work with the MultiPro tailgate so it for sure will easy work. I attached a picture that shows the clearance it provides. We don't have any fixed ball mounts at this time that were designed to provide the needed clearance.
