Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

diagram comparing the number of parts in drum brakes and disc brakes

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.

In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your camper or trailer out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

mounting bracket supporting disc brake

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure even bolt pattern

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Video Transcript for Review of Kodiak Trailer Brakes - 13" Hub/Rotor 8K Raw/E-Coat Disc Brakes - KOD72FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13-inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes. Having the two assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single Dexter axle with an 8,000 pound capacity and the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and as you can see, we've got the eight on six and a half-inch bolt pattern. So these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.

Our calipers and our caliper mounting brackets are E-coated so they're gonna resist rust and corrosion. They've got a 250 to 350 hour salt spray rating. So these are gonna provide adequate rust protection for your campers, your utility trailers and your car haulers, those kind of trailers. If you're looking to upgrade to disc brakes for like a a saltwater boat trailer or a trailer that's gonna come in contact with a lot of road salt throughout the year, I would recommend more of a Dacromet finish or a stainless steel construction. Those are gonna hold up better in those kind of environments, but if your trailer's not gonna come in contact with that much salt, these are gonna do a great job for you.

It'll be just fine for a long time to come. So upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is gonna give you several different benefits as far as performance goes. It's going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance, and it's going to provide a more stable, consistent and controlled ride for you. So you won't experience that push and pull that you're used to experiencing with your drum brakes. These do have the ceramic brake pads that help to increase the stopping power, and you can't see it, but there is a large two and a half-inch diameter stainless steel piston that provides fast responsive braking.

So it is going to be a big improvement as far as performance goes. And then in addition to better performance, these are also going to require less maintenance than your drum brakes. So it's going to help save you time and money over the long run. Having that one-piece hub and rotor assembly is gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. And we do have the vented design here that's gonna help dissipate heat faster to help prevent premature brake pad wear.

And overall these are high-quality automotive grade construction, so they are gonna be very long lasting for you. So, like I said, it will save you time and money over the long run. Now, one caveat with disc brakes is that they do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes. So you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1,500 psi or higher in order to activate your brakes here. Now, obviously, those are not included. We do sell them separately here at etrailer.com, but this isn't gonna be a complete kit if you don't already have those. Now, this is going to include your two cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight 5/8 inch diameter pre-installed wheel bolts. You're also going to get the sixteen 5/8 inch diameter lug nuts so that you can. got that on backwards, that you can make sure that your wheel is going to be secured onto your trailer. We're also going to have the two E-coated cast iron calipers here that are going to apply those brakes for us as well as the two E-coated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets here on the back side. So you can see these do have the four bolt brake flange configuration, so it's gonna be very easy to get this mounted onto your axle. Now, you can see I've got this mounted on top currently and that's just for display purposes for balance and whatnot. When you actually go to install these, they are gonna be mounted on the side and having that side support design actually puts the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. So it's gonna help your bolts last longer. And so that's a nice design there. You are gonna get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts as well. And then the rest of this kit is going to include your races. Your inner and outer race are pre-installed. You'll have your inner and outer bearings here that will fit in there. And then this kit is oil lubricated. So you're going to get the two oil seals for the inside, two oil caps for your outside and then one bottle of eight ounce. It's an eight ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil. So, again, if you are wanting to upgrade from drum brakes to disc brakes or if you're just needing to replace your disc brakes, these are gonna do a good job for you. Like I said, more for your trailers that aren't gonna be experiencing a lot of contact with salt and corrosive materials, but they are gonna provide that better performance that comes with having disc brakes. So that concludes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
