Adding Modern Hub/Drum/Brake Assemblies to 1965 Vintage Trailer
Question:
I have a challenging project: I have a vintage camping trailer 1965 with vintage wheels with unusual dimensions: 13inch five bolt 4.75 bolt spacing. Its 13foot long overall length with hydraulic brakes. Rims dont appear to be available. Though the existing rims may still be serviceable, they show signs of aging. It appears that one viable solution is to replace the hub/drum/brake assemblies to your more common 5 bolt 4.5 bolt spacing. Am I correct in this? Am I missing something? Please advise. Your helpfulness and expertise are appreciated.

Because it can indeed be a challenge to find replacement parts for trailers like yours that are of a substantial age, your easiest route will likely be to replace the axle along with your hubs/drums/brakes. This way all components will be fresh and known to be in good condition. They will also have the same working life. Replacing the axle/spindles will also simplify the process of finding the other items and of maintaining the updated trailer in the coming years.
You will need to determine the weight rating and length of the axle you need (this should be indicated on the axle itself or on the camper). You can then use the link provided to select an axle. We offer some axles complete with hub and electric brake assemblies, in case you want to convert to electric brakes. You will also need to know the measurement from spring seat center to spring seat center and the distance from the hub face on one side to the hub face on the other side.
An example of this sort of kit is part # 35545E-ST-89, which is an 89-inch axle rated for 3500-lbs that comes with 5-on-4-1/2 hubs and 10 x 2-1/4-inch electric brakes. You can use the filters in the left-hand margin to narrow the results based on the characteristics you need.
I have linked an article on how to add electric brakes to a trailer in case this interests you.
