Determining Correct Replacement Axles For Tandem Axle Trailer With Bent Axles

Question:

Hello, I have a tandem trailer , originally set up for car hauling, 7000lbs. I over loaded the trailer last year and bent the axles, both are towing out at bottom. Running on the inside of the tires. Both axles have brake assembly, Can I replace just the axles?? If so do I measure from the brake backing plates and center of leaf springs to insure the proper replacements? Thanks,

You will definitely need to replace both axles due to them being bent. With that said I would also go ahead and check the frame of the trailer and the suspension components for damage to make sure the trailer does not have any structural damage due to being overloaded enough to bend both axles.

To measure for the correct replacements you will need to measure from hub face to hub face, and from spring center to spring center as shown in the included diagram.

In addition you will need to verify the weight rating of the axles you have. You can do this by looking for the axle tag on each axle which with have the weight rating listed, or take the GVWR and divide it by the number of axles to get a good idea on the rating.

Since you mentioned the trailer has a 7000lb capacity it more than likely has two 3500lb axles.

We have quite a few options in this range like the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" Long - 3,500 lbs # 35545E-ST-89 which has an 89" hub face to hub face measurement and a 74" spring center to spring center measurement as shown in the included diagram.

If this matches your current axle this would be a great option as it includes all new hub and drum assemblies, along with new braking assemblies.

If your axles have different measurements just let me know.

I included a video of the # 35545E-ST-89 for you to take a look at.
