Video Transcript for Blue Ox Tow Bar Wiring - Bypasses Vehicle Wiring - BX8869 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox Tail Light Wiring Kit. This wiring kit allows you to get the signal lights needed for flat towing without tapping into your towed vehicle's electrical system. It provides brake signal, running, and signal lights, and it runs beneath the vehicle completely and connects to your RV so it bypasses the towed vehicle's electrical system all the way. The bulbs and sockets are going to mount inside your vehicle's tail lights. To get these mounted in the tail lights you will need to use a 1" diameter hole saw, that's indicated in the included instructions. It does come with detailed installation instructions to help walk you through the entire process step-by-step. Everything here on the table is what you're going to get.

You're going to get two lights, two sockets, you're going to get your bundle of wiring, this is your main wiring harness. It's going to measure around 26' long. You're going to get a couple extra extension wires for the installation back at the tail light assemblies. You're going to get your ground screws, your butt connectors, and you're going to get your ring terminals. The product's also fully made in the USA, and again, it does come with detailed installation instructions to help walk you through that entire process step-by-step. These bulbs are going to sit in a really nice, it's like a J-socket ...

So you can push those down and release them as needed. It's going to use bulb number 2357. That's going to do it for today's look at the Blue Ox Tail Light Wiring Kit.

I needed to wire our ‘17 Chevrolet Sonic for towing behind our Motorhome. My local shop wanted over $xxx to install such wiring. Online I found the Blue Ox wiring kit and decided to do it myself. The kit and instructions were very complete and informative and it took me about three hours to complete the installation. The time consuming part was removing and reinstalling trim and panels to hide the wiring inside the car. The thing I like most about this kit is it’s independent of the cars wiring system and I’m very happy with it.

The wiring harness was great. Directions were very good and installation was fairly easy with few CNN if any real problems.

I put this base plate on with the assistance of my wife very easy to install. Do recommend the video to install

by:

Fast delivery everything arrived on time and in good condition. I installed it on my mini cooper the day it arrived. Came with easy-to-use instructions.

My 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback baseplate has worked great, no "0" issues. I've towed my car over 4,000 miles and the baseplate is as tight as the day I put it on. Great product......

This kit was a lifesaver. I did not want to cut in to my Fiat 500’s wiring, but I didn’t like the magnetic light set up either. This light set up was the happy medium and work’s great. Also, there is no drain on the tow car battery! I ran the wiring through the interior of my car for a really clean look.

Easy Install Light Kit!

by:

We bought the Blue Ox Patriot Braking System from etrailer based on their reviews and their reputation of standing behind their products and being available for questions. We also bought the Blue Ox Tow Bar and Base Plate which I installed myself on our 2016 Fiat Pop. It is such a small and light car that we could probably tow it in most states without a braking system, but we didn't want to take a chance. Better safe than sorry. The system works great. Fortunately, I did not have any issues with the tow bar install except for drilling two holes through the bumper area, however that was my fault (dull bit). etrailer is E-excellent!

by:

I ordered several items to equip my Honda CRV for towing....BlueOx baseplate, lighting kit and a receiver tube (to carry bicycles). Good prices and expeditious shipping. Can't complain about anything....was very happy with their customer service. They certainly will be my go-to source if I need anything in the way of towing or hitch equipment.

by:

Got the products quickly and with no issues. Tail light wiring kit Installation was a few days later due to schedule but the installation went well and the videos of installation steps was very helpful. Use caution when installing the bulb into the tail light assembly. The manufacturer says to use a 1" hole saw. The hole and the bulb are very close in size and can be pretty loose in the hole. You can bend some of the tabs out to make it hold center then apply the silicone sealer.
Hitch receiver and lock - excellent.

This is the second time I’ve used this kit on a vehicle. On my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, the installation required removing trim pieces from the drivers side foot well, door sills, and the rear cargo area. It was more complex than my 1985 Jeep CJ7, but it’s worth it not to have to deal with diode kits etc. the key attribute with this kind of work is planning and patience. The instructions are clear, and the kit works as stated

Autum is the best..She is very knowledgeable and dedicated .Every time I call she spends so much time with me to make sure i get the right item for my project.Love her...She needs a raise... Thanks..

by:

The BX8869 I ordered is a wiring kit used for towing a 2005-07 FORD FOCUS ST. Product arrived in an expedient fashion and the installation was fairly straight forward although finding a way through the firewall seemed dubious at best. Ran the wiring through the engine bay under the vehicle up to the rear tail light housings.. Keeping the wiring up and safe was a bit of a challenge. Based on the experience on the whole I would have no hesitation recommending etrailer to family or friends for quality products at very competitive prices.

by:

This is a great kit to add rear lights to a Ford Focus because you have to remove the negative battery cable for towing. There is more then enough wire to complete the job of wiring the lights from the rear of the car to the front for a permanent installation.

by:

Blue Ox is top of the line and this wiring kit is easy to install. With the included instructions and the eTrailer YouTube video, anyone can complete the install with basic tools.

Overall, eTrailer customer service, products, and shipping is top of the line. I ordered products via phone and their website and both experiences were exceptional. There pricing is better than any other site or shop. eTrailer is now my new go-to site for anything I need. Thanks guys.

by:

I installed the wiring system on a 2015 equinox and it works great. I’m no rocket scientist but the instructions and the assistance I received from etraier made me look like one. Again it works great and I will be using etrailer again for other upgrades to my moterhome suspension system.

by:

Great way to bypass factory wiring. Ran wires through frame, drilled hole in bottom of tail light. Works great!

Still works great, replaced bulbs with LEDs. Much better

Great service. Product delivered within days. Online "How To" videos are great for the self installer! You have a customer for life...Thanks!

Working great. Definitely the easiest way to wire a tow vehicle.

by:

Finished the install this weekend of BX8869 wiring kit along with the final hookup with the roadmaster tow bar. Everything went exactly as shown in the directions and the video for the CMax. The video was exactly what I needed. Everything was working exactly as expected on our test drive.

by:

This product worked as intended. I was able to keep the car wiring separate from the motorhome wiring, electrically. In my Saturn it was relatively easy to run the wiring and drill the new holes in the back of the rear light housings. I will use these same type of parts again if I change my towed vehicle.

by:

Base plates went on after going through several drill bits. The examples for installing safety cables did not apply to my vehicle but they are on the bottom of the frame. Installing the tail light bulbs was difficult without a one inch hole saw (couldn't find one). Had to trim fascia to install wire receiver. Overall ok.

by:

the service was outstanding . very pleased with the quick service. your experts provided me with a great tow bar system when others said it couldn't be done. I am recommending you to all my towing friends. keep up the good work

by:

Very quick service. I have a few questions and they were quick to answer them. I definitely would use them again in the future.

by:

Purchased BX8869 for installation on a 2016 Veloster. Instructions provided were clear, and easy to follow. Once installed the light are not noticeable in housing.
Routed wire via channel beneath vehicle without having to go inside. Great option.

by:

Blue OX product is excellent. will use on a vehicle to be towed behind a motorhome. Too bad can't discuss eTrailer's POOR ordering and shipping procedures. Will no longer recommend eTrailer to friends.

by:

Cheapest that I've found for the Blue Ox line of products. Everything in stock and great shipping. Will be installing my light kit this week. Have installed these before and they work well.

by:

The wiring was simple and straight forward. The only issue is the 1" hole drilled for the light bulb socket is a little larger than the socket. Directions suggest using silicone to fasten the sockets. If you lose a lamp on the road it's not convenient change bulbs.

  • How to Install the Blue Ox Tail Light Wiring Kit on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler
In order to install the Blue Ox Tail Light Wiring Kit part # BX8869 in the back of the taillight housing on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler you will need at least 1" of space in order for the bulb and socket kit to work. I did some research and looked at a few of the taillight assemblies for your Jeep and believe you should have absolutely no problem using this kit. 1) Starting in the engine compartment of the towed vehicle, run the 26 ft. harness through the fire wall, under the driver's side...
