Will Flexco Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The Flexco pull-out steps from Stromberg Carlson are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Mounting Bracket Stromberg

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 28-1/4" wide and 14" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 21-1/16" wide to 28-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Entry Height Stromberg

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 3" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom steps to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket width measurements in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Mounting Bracket Width Entry Height Part Number
21-1/16" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1120
23-5/8" 19" - 22" SMFP-2120
24-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1220
25" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1100
26" 19" - 22" SMFP-2100
27-1/8" 30" - 33" SMFP-3200L
28-1/8" 26" - 29" SMFP-3100
28-1/8" 34" - 37" SMFP-4400
28-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1200

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with carriage bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware tight

Video Transcript for FAQ Trailer Step Measuring

Hey guys, this is Jake here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna go over some details and the measurements that you're gonna need to take if you're wanting to replace your fifth wheel or your travel trailer steps. If you're looking to replace your motor home or your RV steps, we're gonna have a separate video made just for that. Now, a couple of reasons why you might want to replace your steps. One of the biggest reasons is because people don't like these pull out steps because they're uncomfortable and makes for a not pleasant experience on the inside of the camper if they're folded out because they hover above the ground. When somebody steps on 'em, it rocks the whole camper.

So that might be a reason why you wanna upgrade from the pullout style steps to the fold out style which will fold up into the door of your camper. The nice part about the fold out is that they're going to be rested on the ground, so all the weight from the person walking into the camper is gonna be pushing on the ground and not pulling on the side of the camper. With that being said, a lot of people like this style because it's not gonna take up space on the inside of your door. So regardless of which kind you would like to go with, there's gonna be different measurements for each. There's gonna be a measurement for the pullout style if you wanna replace just the steps you have outside already.

And then there's gonna be different measurements for the fold up style, to be able to measure, you know, you're gonna have to measure from the ground to the inside and then side to side in the door. So, it's gonna be different because they're gonna be located in a different spot. Now, here we have a different set of pull down camper steps. The reason why I switched from my camper to these is because my camper, the bracket's actually welded in. If that's the case, you're just gonna have to cut it out.

But the reason we're showing you here is because these are bolted on and I'll be able to give you the proper measurements to replace 'em. So, first measurement you need to take is from this bracket, the bracket that's actually attached to your camper, not the step bracket, from the inside to the inside of these two brackets, which for us here is gonna be 27.5. And then what you need to do is you need to measure the depth of this bracket. So from this outer edge here to the trailer frame. Good for that.

We get about 13 and 3/8. And then the last measurement is from the ground. Now you wanna make sure you're on level ground and your camper is level from the ground to this bolt right here on the outside. So that. we're getting about 26 and 1/4. Now, if you're looking to upgrade to a set of fold-down steps that actually store inside of your camper, the two measurements that you need to take is from inside flange to inside flange, not the inside of the actual door frame, because it's gonna need to fit in between these flanges. So for us measure right up against there and we get about 24.5. You can see there. The other measurement we need to take is from the ground, again, being on level ground from the ground to the top inside of the threshold itself. So for us, it's going to be about 35. And the last thing that you need to do is you need to match up the measurements that you've taken, whether you're replacing your steps that came on your camper or you're replacing them and upgrading to the fold up type. You just need to match up those measurements to the measurements on our product page for the steps that you're looking for. Well, guys, hopefully this information was helpful in helping you to find the right information and the right measurements you need to replace your camper steps. If you have any questions, please leave 'em in comments below and we'll see you next time..

Perfect exact replacement of our step to our horse trailer. Alex was very helpful and knew what we needed and actually had it shipped to us a day earlier than expected. Great customer service and will use for all further trailer needs.

by:

Step was just what I needed for horse trailer tack room. Had to do some fabrication to get it to mount up but expected this. The step is simple to use and true 24" wide foot bed.

Works great couldnt be happier

My new enclosed trailer does not have an inside step as our last one did and the step up from grade level was a bit too much. I added this step with a couple of hours' time, using aluminum angle to back up the channel of the aluminum trailer. Stepping into the trailer is a lot safer now.

The steps meet my needs and have provided a big improvement in access to the side door of my trailer. Quality seems good and I have had no problems with them.

by:

Great product and terrific customer service to go with it. I installed this on my cargo trailer so I welded it to the undercarriage frame. The metal was thick enough so as to make welding it a breeze. I didn't know there were still companies such as etrailer that still have 5 star customer service. Keep up the good work!!

Yes, definitely pretty handy to have.

As much as you don't think you need a stair, these have been a godsend for getting in and out of an enclosed utility trailer all day long. I would highly recomend this product

After a year of wear and tear, road salt, and all Mother Nature can dish out to the undercarriage of a trailer, this step work flawlessly. Going to order two more

by:

Very handy for my cargo trailer. I had to replace it a time or 2 when I accidentally bent it due to clearance issues. This last time I added some bracing and its done great thus far.

Great! No trouble with steps operation and its a very useful part of my trailer.

by:

The steps are very sturdy and easy to use. The low profile gives meet better ground clearance than I had with my power steps. I'm very pleased with the product.

Still very happy with the steps.

Solid and sturdy. I was able to install it by myself in like 5-10 minutes. Looks great.

The steps are well made and I am sure I can install them on my camper. My only disappointment on your website was there was no clear definition of the actual mounting hole locations. It made purchasing the product a bit of a guessing game. Some modification to the camper mounting points will have to be made.

If you watch the product demonstration video, the mounting hole spacing is mentioned.

Excellent product. Easy to install and meets all of my requirements. We are using them on our train that we are making for children to ride along with their parents. Would recommend this step to anyone who needs an extra step.

Very good product for what we are using it for. The kids fine it much easier to get in and out of the train cars. I now need to order another one for our trailer for transporting the train cars here and there.

by:

I installed the step on my cargo trailer on the side entry door. It made it a lot easier to get in and out without a large step up or down. Prefect.

by:

The step I ordered was for my 20 foot enclosed car trailer. It was a perfect fit, and the quality was very good. It installed very easy, and has been working fine. I would recommend this product for its quality and design.

The Flexco step was a great addition to my enclosed cargo trailer (used for general contracting purposes). Sturdy enough to get the job done at a reasonable price!

by:

Once again etrailer provided me with another great product for my cargo trailer conversion.
The Flexco low profile pull out step is perfect, as my trailer floor is closer to the ground that traditional travel trailers.
Order confirmation and delivery were fast, as always.
etrailer is and will continue to be my first choice for trailer parts and accessories.

by:

Nice product for very lightweight and for smaller doors. These worked for
my two smaller doors as replacements to failing hinges. The doors were approx.
18" wide x 12"tall. My cabinet doors are solid Oak so they are hefty.
For my larger overhead cabinet doors I will be ordering exact replacement
hinges: H-HS100-SN, the SN=Satin Nickel.

In your online video, it might be good to mention how much weight a pair
of these hinges are rated for. The video was excellent in giving me a good
idea on how the hinges function.

I will toss my unused pair of these hinges in my "Misc. RV" box of goodies. I'm
sure I will use them later....

I received my products in three days from UPS normal ground, faster then I expected.

Thank you for a good experience.

by:

Bent within one week of installation. Bent just like the original one did. Would not recommend

by:

Haven’t installed this yet but quality is good and looks good when placed under my cargo trailer. Was worried about ground clearance while driving, but this shouldn’t be an issue.

by:

Great, my wife is having problems getting into our SUV, I added running boards but she still struggled. I attached the RV step under the running board using standard T-bolts works fantastic very well constructed.

by:

I would recommend etrailer to anyone who wants a great product and fast delivery I ordered 2 pull-out steps it on Saturday and it arrived today Thursday. I installed it in no time and another great thing is they are made in America.

by:

WELL MADE AMERICAN MADE STEP PRETTY EASY TO INSTALL EVEN WHEN THE TRAILER NEVER CAME WITH A STEP.

  • Availability of Replacement Single Step with Mounting Frame Brackets 22 Wide
The closest we have to a 22" mounting bracket spacing is the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Step # SMFP-1120 which has mounting bracket that are 21-1/16" wide. If this doesn't fit (which it sounds like it won't) then I recommend going with the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Step # SMFP-1200 and using the Outriggers # LC301704 to replace your current mounting brackets. These will enable you to get the desired mounting bracket distance.

The Flexco Manual Pull-Out Step for RVs - Single - 3" Drop/Rise - 24" Wide - 300 lbs # SMFP-1200 measures 23-1/4" center to center between its mounting holes; additionally, it is 25" from outside to outside of the mounting brackets and 22" from inside to inside of the mounting brackets. I have added a link to a video review of these steps for you to check out as well.

Both are single step assemblies but they differ in the amount of drop/rise.
