Why Choose A Folding Bike?

Dahon Mariner Folding Bike Being Folded

A folding bike is a great alternative to a standard bike. It's compact and lightweight so you can take it with you nearly anywhere you go, plus there's no need for a bike rack, hitch, or even a bike lock. Unlike a regular bike, you can tuck it away in your RV's storage compartment, set it by your desk in the classroom, carry it on a bus on your way to work, or put it in a closet so it's out of sight. Simply put, a folder stores in places a standard bike can't.

Quick and Easy Folding Design

Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike Being Folded

The Mariner D8 takes less than 60 seconds to fold up, and you can do it in 4 easy steps. First, open the safety latch on the seat post and lower the saddle, with it angled slightly to the right so it won't interfere with the top tube when folding. Second, fold the pedals in. Third, open the safety latch on the handlebar post and fold the handlebars down. Lastly, open the safety latch on the frame and fold the bike together. There are magnets on each wheel that help hold the bike together in the folded position.

Boaters will love the Mariner for its corrosion-resistant components and accessories. The included cargo rack is great for carrying purchases made while touring seaside communities, and the front and rear fenders help prevent water and mud from splashing up. Its compact size and light weight make it easy to carry on and off your boat. And, unlike a regular bike, you can place this bike in a storage compartment on your boat so it's out of sight and out of the way.

The Dalloy aluminum frame has a brushed coating that adds an extra layer of protection against corrosion, so it's great for use around salt water. This makes it a great bike to carry on your boat for touring seaside communities. A quick-release, ViseGrip latch on the frame and handlebar post hinges keep the frame locked tight and ensure the bike won't collapse while you're riding. For extra security there is a DoubleLok knob that pivots over each latch to keep it closed.

Video Transcript for Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike Review

Hey everyone. Today we're going to take a look at the Dahon Mariner Folding Bike. Now this bike is going to be a great option for any commuters out there who may be limited on space. You might live in an apartment, and you just need a compact and lightweight bike to be able to get you from point A to point B.Now the biggest appeal for this bike is going to be that it folds up into a compact size. That's going to make it very easy to store. It's going to make it very easy to transport as well.

The thing that kind of sticks out about this bike when compared to other folding bikes is that the handlebars actually fold down like so. It's going make it a lot easier to make it compact. You're not going to have to worry about taking the handlebars off or just them being in the way. A little tip, you do want to make sure you turn your seat sideways. It's going to make it easier for when it folds up.

We'll fold the folder pedals in, and then the magnet is going to make sure that it holds it together very well. One small detail about this bike that does go a long way and is noticeable is that the seat post tube comes straight down and makes contact with the ground. That kind of forms a tripod along with the two tires, making sure it can stand up on its own. You're not going to have to worry about leaning it up against a wall or anything like that. And it's going to be just as easy to get it unfolded and ready for use. Both the seat post tube and the handlebars are going to be adjustable in height. This is going to give you full adjustability so you can make it comfortable for your ride.

Really, if you're just within the range of 5'4" to 6'3", you're going to have a comfortable ride. And it's also going to have a weight capacity of 230 pounds. The handlebars are going to have really good grip to them. So even if you're riding it some wet conditions, you're still going to be able to keep a hold of them and maintain control of your bike. We're going to have breaks on both sides for the front and the rear. It's going to have some great stopping power, like I said, even in wet conditions.

And then on the right side you are going to have the Shimano trigger shifter. It is going to have an optical readout to let you know which gear you're in, and then with your index finger and thumb you can change gears. You are going to have eight speeds on this bike. With that shifter you are going to have the Shimano ALTUS Derailleur. This is going to make for easy and smooth sifting between your gears. That's important because you want as little delay as possible when changing gears. Both of our pedals are going to be able to fold up just by pulling in on the inside. Brings it up. You're going to conserve about four to five inches per pedal when folding it up. The alloy aluminum frame is going to be very durable and lightweight. So whether it's folded up or folded out like this, it's going to be very light and easy to handle. And it's also going to be very resistant to rust and corrosion. So this is also going to be good for if you're a boater and you like to ride your bike around when you dock at certain places. We are going to have a cargo rack just above our back wheel with the included elastic strap. It's going to make it very easy to secure any small bags that you would like to take with you on your trip. Pull it across, bring it down, and hook it in in place. The Citizen Touring Tires on our Dahon are going to grip pavement much better than your standard bike. This is going to make it great for if you commute in the city or other urban area. The fenders on both the back and the front wheels are going to do a great job of making sure that it doesn't throw up any mud or of water on you while you're riding.Well, thank you all for watching. That's going to do it for our look at the Dahon Mariner Folding Bike.

These bikes are light and easy to load on or off our boat. They give us a many mile range from each marina we visit. With the 8 gears, we can handle any terrain. Easily fold up or fold out in 30 seconds. And they are real head turners. We are 68 years old and feel like kids on the bike paths!

Unboxed my Mariner D8 and really couldn’t be happier. I wanted a trigger shifter, heavy duty puncture protection enhanced tires, adjustable handlebars and Shimano components.
I’ve taken the bike for a short spin on packed dirt(my driveway)and had no problem getting used to 20” wheels. I have a plethora of bikes but wanted something quick and easy for camping.
I’ll be testing the bike on my next camping trip - 3 National Parks in one exciting road trip.
I ordered my bike on Saturday and received it today, Wednesday - can’t believe how fast etrailer got my order processed and sent. Couldn’t ask for more. Happy cycling!

Good quality bike. Good customer service at etrailer. The only problem is the lack of quality control.
I suggest that etrailer open the box & inspect for missing parts. Mine came with one part missing. It took weeks to get the part. It took almost a year to get my first bike—but etrailer updated me regularly. Thank you for that. For my second bike order, it took a whole year. Again, etrailer kept me well informed. Folks, if you plan to order a bike, give yourself a good six months, the minimum. Overall, it’s a good bike—the people at etrailer are outstanding.
