The Montague Paratrooper Pro is a full-size mountain bike that offers all the features of a regular mountain bike with the added benefit of the folding design. This means you can take it with you nearly anywhere you go, and you don't need to buy a hitch or bike rack to take it to the trailhead. The Pro is Montague's classic Paratrooper mountain bike with upgraded components, 3 more gears, and adjustable suspension with full lockout. Off-road riders, campers, singletrackers, and all-day adventurers will love it for its trail-ready tires, adjustable suspension, and included cargo rack. It also has a DirectConnect latch that ensures the bike won't fold up and collapse while you're riding. And, unlike a regular bike, you can store a folding bike in a closet or compartment so it's out of sight in your home or RV.

Quick and Easy Folding Design

Montague Paratrooper Pro Folding Bike Being Folded

The Paratrooper Pro takes approximately 20 seconds to fold up. You can do it in 4 easy steps. Undo the latch on the back of the seat post and rotate the cargo basket under the rear tire to convert it to a bike stand. Open the quick-release latch on the front hub and pull the spring to remove the front wheel. Open the CLIX DirectConnect latch under the top tube, and fold the bike in half. Use the included hook-and-loop strap to secure the front wheel to the folded bike.

The bike weighs just 31 lbs so it's convenient to carry wherever you go. It's easy to haul up and down stairs or place in your trunk or hatch for weekend excursions or after-work getaways.

Montague Paratrooper Pro

Montague Paratrooper Pro Folding Bike

  1. Shimano Acera 3-Speed Front Derailleur -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Front Derailleur
The Shimano Acera 3-speed front derailleur shifts the top part of the chain between the 3 front sprockets. It works with the Shimano Deore 9-speed rear derailleur to give the drivetrain a total of 27 speeds for you to choose from. The top swing derailleur creates a small profile so you can mount a water bottle to the seat post without obstruction. It's also dual pull, so the shifter cable can be routed to the shifter from either the top or the bottom of the derailleur. Routing from the top is great for mountain bikes because it helps prevent the shifter cable from getting hit by a rock or covered in mud.

  2. Shimano Deore 9-Speed Rear Derailleur -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Rear Derailleur
The Shimano Deore 9-speed rear derailleur shifts the bottom part of the chain between the 9 rear sprockets. It has a low-profile design with a short pulley cage that provides clearance above rocks, weeds, and other objects that you could potentially hit when riding hilly terrain. The lightning-quick action is perfect when you need to make sudden gear changes. It's constructed of lightweight aluminum that is great for off-road riding, and it's designed to help prevent chain drop and chain slap. It works with the Shimano Acera 3-speed front derailleur to give the drivetrain a total of 27 speeds for you to choose from.

  3. 26" Kenda Slant Six Tires -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Tires
The 26" Kenda Slant Six tires are constructed of a lightweight, dual rubber compound that is designed for riding trails. A hard compound in the center tread reduces rolling resistance so they're fast on packed surfaces. A softer compound on the corners improves grip and lets the tires float over loose terrain. They also have materials under the tread and between the beads that prevents punctures caused by rocks and other trail hazards. The wheels have double-walled rims that provide increased support when compared with single-walled rims so they're better suited for off-road riding. The tubes have Schrader valves with cores that are easy to remove.

  4. RackStand Cargo Rack and Kickstand -
    Montague Allston Cargo Basket
The RackStand is a sturdy steel cargo rack over the rear wheel that lets you carry your gear. This eases your burden so you don't have to carry your gear in a clumsy backpack. You can convert the RackStand into a kickstand by simply opening the latch that attaches it to the seat post and rotating it underneath the tire. This also give you support under the bike for cleaning and maintenance. The fender for the rear wheel is also integrated into the RackStand.

  5. Mountain Aero Saddle with Center Gap -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Saddle
The cushioned Mountain Aero saddle has a center gap that helps reduce pressure on your sensitive areas. This helps make it comfortable to ride on even for long periods of time. It's also easy to adjust to accommodate your height, and you can do it in seconds. Just loosen the quick-clamp, slide the seat post to your desired height, and close the quick-clamp.

  6. Kalloy Aluminum Frame with 5-Layer Brushed Coating -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Frame
The 18" frame is made out of 6061 aircraft-grade Kalloy aluminum tubing that is lightweight yet stronger than standard steel tubing. It's great for riding over rocks, through ditches, and navigating other off-road hazards. It also has a 5-layer brushed coating that helps prevent corrosion so it's great to use in wet conditions.

  7. Seat Post Hinge with CLIX DirectConnect Latch -
    Montague HInge
The large hinge on the seat post connects the front and rear parts of the frame, keeping the point of articulation off of the top tube. This prevents the frame from developing a potential weak point as can happen with other folding bikes that are hinged on the top tube. It features a CLIX DirectConnect latch that automatically secures the hinge in place when the bike is unfolded. This prevents the bike from accidentally folding up and collapsing while you are riding.

  8. Shimano Rapid Fire Plus Trigger Shifters -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Trigger Shifters
The Shimano Rapid Fire Plus trigger shifters are located on the right side and left side of the handlebars next to the hand brakes. They let you easily shift gears up and down using your thumbs and index fingers without having to move your hands off the grips. The shifter on the right shifts between 9 speeds on the rear derailleur. The shifter on the left shifts between 3 speeds on the front derailleur. An optical display on each shifter lets you easily see what gear you are in.

  9. Handlebar Brake Levers -
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Brake Levers
The handlebar brake levers are located in front of each hand grip so you can steer and brake without having to move your hands. The right hand brake lever stops the front wheel and the left hand brake lever stops the rear wheel. The soft, ergonomic handles are easy to grip so your hands won't slide off them while steering.

  10. SR Suntour XCM30 Adjustable Suspension Fork with Lockout -
    Montague Paratrooper Suspension Fork
The SR Suntour XCM30 coil spring fork lets you manually adjust the suspension so you get the smoothest ride possible over rocky trails as well as smooth pathways. The blue Speed Lock knob on the right side lets you adjust the level of travel. You can open it for full travel, or close it so that travel is completely locked out. In lockout mode the suspension is turned off so that there is no travel. This helps reduce the amount of energy you spend when pedaling up steep inclines or accelerating on smooth surfaces. The black PRELOAD knob on the left side adjusts the stiffness of the compression. For pathways, turn the knob clockwise to increase compression damping so that the fork has little bounce. For rough terrain, turn the knob counterclockwise to reduce compression damping so that it bounces easier. The fork also has a quick-release latch that lets you remove the front wheel in seconds so you can fold the bike up fast.

  11. Tektro Novella Mechanical Disc Brakes-
    Montague Paratrooper Pro Disk Brakes
The Tektro Novella mechanical front and rear disc brakes provide greater breaking power and are more suited for hard trail riding when compared with rim V-brakes. They have 160-mm drilled and slotted rotors that attach directly to the wheel hubs and squeeze the pads from both sides of the tire. This ensures your brake pads are always effective, even when hitting large holes and riding in wet conditions. And they won't put wear and tear on your tire's rims like V-brakes do. The single-piece bodies are made of aluminum that resists the heat build-up that many disc brakes can develop with extended use. They also have wear indicators on the pads that identify when to adjust them or replace them.

  12. Front and Rear Fenders -
    Montague Fenders
The Paratrooper Pro is equipped with fenders over the front and rear tires. They help prevent water, mud, and road grime from splashing up and soiling your clothes or splashing onto the clothes of your fellow riders. They also help reduce the amount of grit that can get into your bike's moving components. The front fender is constructed of lightweight yet durable plastic that won't break when hit with rocks or other road debris. The rear fender is integrated into the cargo rack and will be located under the wheel when the rack is rotated for use as a kickstand.

Video Transcript for Montague Paratrooper PRO Folding Bike Review

Colin: Hey everyone. I'm Colin here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at the Montague Paratrooper folding bike. Now at first you might be skeptical of a folding bike. You might be worried about how well it's going to hold up when you're riding it or how durable it's going to be during those rigorous riding conditions that you may encounter. Now Montague actually designed this bike with the help of the U.S. military, hence the name Paratrooper.

They wanted to design a compact bike that was going to be durable enough to endure those rigorous conditions and so that those air born soldiers could jump out of the plane with this attached to them, that way when they land on the ground they can get the bike folded out and ready to go.Now Montague makes a wide variety of folding bikes ranging from your more road bikes where you're going to ride it on pavement a lot more to your off road mountain bikes. Our Paratrooper pro's going to be great on off roading, but it's also going to be great for those occasional pave and rides, should you be doing those. Now it's a full size mountain bike that has that added benefit of it folding up so that you can conserve on storage space. I'll go ahead and do that for you right now. We'll start by putting down our rack stand. All we've got to do is pull up on that level, push it out, and we can let it go all the way, fall to the ground, and we're going to pick up the back end.

It's going to sit right under the tire right there. Now we're going to come up to the front tire and remove it. All we've got to do is undo their patented click system. So flip that up. I'm going to actually pull right on that cylinder and then push as well and then bring it right up and off. Now we'll set this front tire to the side for now. We'll go ahead and set the two forks on the ground real quick.

We're also going to have to fold down our fender. So we can go ahead and do that as well. Just a little silver knob right here, we'll turn that. And we just pull it out and then it folds right down like that. Now we're going to come to the middle of the frame and undo their clicks quick release system. Once we flip the lever off we're going to have to push up to get the latch to undo.

Now and easy way to do this is I can just flip it around, bring it all the way around. It will just set right on top of that rack stand. Fold the handlebars in and bring it up.Then we're going to take this hook and loop strap all the way off. This strap will wrap around that front wheel. And then you can just secure them both to make that it stays together. Now from here just grab your front wheel. We'll hold it against our frame, we can pick it up and go store it wherever we need to.Now a couple of benefits to having a folding style bike are going to be one, you're not going to have to invest in a hitch mounted bike rack or a roof rack with a bike rack to be able to get your bike from point A to point B. Another is that it's going to conserve on storage space. If you live in an apartment building or a smaller house where you might not have space for a full sized bike, to store it without keeping it outside. It's going to be able to fold up into this compact size. And you can just set it in the corner of your storage facility or even in your basement. Now the frame has an aircraft grade aluminum construction. So it's going to hold up to those tough off road conditions that you might be taking it through. It's also going to be lightweight, which means it's easy to fold up and carry around to wherever you need it to be. It also comes in three different sizes. Montague has height recommendations for each size. Go ahead and check the description below to see if your height matches the size. And it's also going to have a five layer matte black anti-corrosion finish to help resist all that wear if you do leave it outside. Now one thing that makes Montague's bikes a bit superior to other folding bikes is that their hinge point where the bike folks is right in line with the seat post too. Some other bike companies might have it in the middle of the frame right here, which could compromise the weight distribution. If you think about it, when you're sitting on the bike, it's that seat post tube that's really taking all your weight when you're riding the bike. So it only makes sense to have that hinge point in line with it to make sure that the weight comes down through here and evenly distributes it throughout all the tubing. Now up top we're going to have inaudible 00:03:49 rapid fire trigger system for shifting. It's going to make for a nice and easy transitions for if you need to go up or down depending on how much power you're going to need. So just clicking it, it goes right up. It's going to change gears very effectively. In fact we're going to have a nine speed gear shift. And up front on the other side we're going to have three speeds totalling 27.Now up front we're going to have Shimano's Asera de railer. Just going to make for a nice and easy transition when you're trying to shift up or down. While on the back we're going to have Shimano's Dior de railer, again it's just going to do a great job of making sure you have nice and smooth transitions when you're trying to shift up or down. Now with the rack stand up, I can actually show you guys the efficiency of those de railers. So go ahead and start pedaling. We'll start up the front. You can just see as soon as I transition it, it goes up to the next gear. It'll go back down very quick. Just going to make for a nice and smooth ride. Now here on the back again, just nice and easy transitions. It's really important to have those transitions because when you're mountain biking and you're going up the hill, if you need more power you just go up in gear, just going to make sure that it gets there right when you need it to with no delay. Now one add on we want to mention that we have on our Paratrooper Pro is the folding pedals from Montague. Again, these are sold separately here at etrailer. Just a nice and easy way. Just fold the pedals up, conserve a little bit more space when you're folding it up could make all the difference. Now we're also going to have two fenders. One of the front wheel and one on the back. Those are just nice additions for the bike to make sure that it's not throwing up a bunch of mud and dirt on you while yore riding. It's easily removable if you don't want it on there and you can fold it down when you're folding the bike up. All you have to do is loosen that knob. It folds right down. Now the fender on the back's actually going to be integrated onto the rack stand. And again it's just going to help prevent a lot of rock and dirt being thrown up. Now we're going to have a inaudible 00:05:44 lockout suspension system. So it's going to be great for taking in a lot of that impact when you're off roading. The great thing about that lock out feature of this is that when you're going for those occasional pavement rides you can lock it out completely so that the suspension doesn't take away the energy you're using to pedal hard. For example, right here we have it unlocked right now. You can see it pushing down so absorbing a lot of the impact. As you tighten it up you can actually adjust it for the terrain that you're actually going on. So if you're going on not necessarily smooth terrain like pavement, but it's still going to be a little bit rocky. You can adjust it to where it's not going to take as much as your impact. And then when you lock it out completely for those pavement trips, you can see right now it's not taking any impact, so you're not going to be wasting that energy. Now we're going to have a set of mechanical disc breaks on our Paratrooper Pro. This is going to be a bit of an upgrade from those pad breaks. It just gives you more breaking power while you're riding through that rough terrain. And it's also going to be an advantage for if you're in some wet conditions. If you ride through a stream or something like that, those pads can get a little bit slippery and compromise your breaking power. With this breaks, you don't got to worry about that. Now we're also going to have an Arrow Mountain adjustable height saddle. So you can just undo that lever, raise or lower the height depending on what you want to be sitting at for your ride. Now I've been riding this bike around a lot today. It just proves to be very solid. The folding is not an issue with me anymore. I was skeptical about it at first. But now I just know it's going to be a very solid ride and it's really just going to get the job done.I guess one thing, if I do want to be nitpicky about it is that the seat is a little bit uncomfortable at times if you're riding it for the full duration of the day. But you could always upgrade to a padded seat, or if it just doesn't bother you then you don't got to worry about it.When I'm all done I'm going to throw it in the back of my vehicle. And I'm ready to hit the road.Thank you all for watching. That's going to do it for our look at the Paratrooper Pro folding bike from Montague.

etrailer did a fine job in shipping and me obtaining the bike quickly. Excellent communication, I definitely recommend them.

Fun bike to ride, very good quality, rackstand is quite convenient.

Montague did a mediocre job on installing the disc brakes - I expect to do some adjustment after shipping, but it was clear that the back brake was never adjusted properly to begin with. No reflection on etrailer though, since the bikes are assembled packaged at Montague.

Awesome bike. Fast shipping! I never even thought of eTrailer.com as a place to shop for a new mountain bike, but my google search led me here and I couldn’t be happier. Unlike most online bike stores eTrailer.com actually has bikes in stock and they ship immediately. My bike arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Montague folding bikes are perfect for campers like us who need to pack everything away when in transit. I love my new Paratrooper Pro!

Great product and super service. Product arrived expeditiously. I highly recommend this product and business!

Great bike so far. Getting it through etrailer saved me money via shipping, but the bike was not pre-assembled like it should of been. Had to call the number on the manual and they were able to send me some further instructions on how to fix the problems with the bike that did not allow it to lock into 1 piece...
