The Montague Urban is a full-size road bike that offers all the features of a regular road bike with the added benefit of the folding design. This means you can take it with you nearly anywhere you go. Commuters will love it because you can easily take it with you on a bus, carry it up and down stairs, and store it by your desk. Shoppers will love it because you can carry a small amount of groceries or other gear on the cargo rack. Students will love it because it's easy to carry into class, a coffee shop, or store in a small dorm. It also has a DirectConnect latch that ensures the bike won't fold up and collapse while you're riding. And, unlike a regular bike, you can store a folding bike in a closet or compartment so it's out of sight in your home or RV.

Quick and Easy Folding Design

Montague Urban Folding Bike Being Folded

The Urban takes approximately 20 seconds to fold up. You can do it in 4 easy steps. Undo the latch on the back of the seat post and rotate the cargo basket under the rear tire to convert it to a bike stand. Open the quick-release latch on the front hub and pull the spring to remove the front wheel. Open the CLIX DirectConnect latch under the top tube, and fold the bike in half. Use the included hook-and-loop strap to secure the front wheel to the folded bike.

The bike weighs just 29 lbs so it's convenient to carry wherever you go. It's easy to haul up and down stairs, load in and out of your trunk or truck bed, and you don't have to worry about locking it up when not in use.

Montague Urban

Montague Urban Folding Bike

  1. Shimano Altus 3-Speed Front Derailleur -
    Montague Urban Front Derailleur
The Shimano Altus 3-speed front derailleur shifts the top part of the chain between the 3 front sprockets. It works with the Shimano Acera 7-speed rear derailleur to give the drivetrain a total of 21 speeds for you to choose from. The top swing derailleur creates a small profile so you can mount a water bottle to the seat post without obstruction. It's also top pull, so the shifter cable can be only routed to the shifter from the top of the derailleur. Routing from the bottom is standard on road bikes, but it's routed from the top on the Urban to accommodate the triple crankset.

  2. Shimano Acera 7-Speed Rear Derailleur -
    Montague Urban Rear Derailleur
The Shimano Acera 7-speed rear derailleur shifts the bottom part of the chain between the 7 rear sprockets. It has a light action for precise shifting that's perfect for road cycling. The lightning-quick action is perfect when you need to make sudden gear changes. It's constructed of lightweight aluminum and steel that are designed for pavement riding. It works with the Shimano Altus 3-speed front derailleur to give the drivetrain a total of 21 speeds for you to choose from.

  3. 700c Kenda Tires -
    Montague Tires
The 700c Kenda semi-knobby tires are great on paved or gravel roads. The wheels have double-walled rims that provide increased support when compared with single-walled rims. This makes them better at navigating speed bumps, pot holes, and other road hazards. The tubes have Schrader valves with cores that are easy to remove.

  4. RackStand Cargo Rack and Kickstand -
    Montague Allston Cargo Basket
The RackStand is a sturdy steel cargo rack over the rear wheel that lets you carry your gear. This eases your burden so you don't have to carry groceries, textbooks, and other items in a clumsy backpack. You can convert the RackStand into a kickstand by simply opening the latch that attaches it to the seat post and rotating it underneath the tire. This also give you support under the bike for cleaning and maintenance. The fender for the rear wheel is also integrated into the RackStand.

  5. Gel Saddle with Elastomer Comfort System -
    Montague Urban Saddle
The gel saddle has an elastomer comfort system that makes it comfortable even on long rides. It has a long, narrow shape that won't chafe your thighs as you pedal. It's also easy to adjust to accommodate your height, and you can do it in seconds. Just loosen the quick-clamp, slide the seat post to your desired height, and close the quick-clamp.

  6. Kalloy Aluminum Frame with 5-Layer Brushed Coating -
    Montague Urban Frame
The 19" frame is made out of 6061 aircraft-grade Kalloy aluminum tubing that is lightweight yet stronger than standard steel tubing. It's great for riding over rocks, through ditches, and navigating other off-road hazards. It also has a 5-layer brushed coating that helps prevent corrosion so it's great to use in wet conditions.

  7. Seat Post Hinge with CLIX DirectConnect Latch -
    Montague HInge
The large hinge on the seat post connects the front and rear parts of the frame, keeping the point of articulation off of the top tube. This prevents the frame from developing a potential weak point as can happen with other folding bikes that are hinged on the top tube. It features a CLIX DirectConnect latch that automatically secures the hinge in place when the bike is unfolded. This prevents the bike from accidentally folding up and collapsing while you are riding.

  8. Shimano EZ Fire Trigger Shifters -
    Montague Urban Trigger Shifters
The Shimano EZ Fire trigger shifters are located on the right side and left side of the handlebars next to the hand brakes. They let you easily shift gears up and down using your thumbs and index fingers without having to move your hands off the grips. The shifter on the right shifts between 7 speeds on the rear derailleur. The shifter on the left shifts between 3 speeds on the front derailleur. An optical display on each shifter lets you easily see what gear you are in.

  9. Handlebar Brake Levers -
    Montague Urban Brake Levers
The handlebar brake levers are located in front of each hand grip so you can steer and brake without having to move your hands. The right hand brake lever stops the front wheel and the left hand brake lever stops the rear wheel. The soft, ergonomic handles are easy to grip so your hands won't slide off them while steering.

  10. Tektro Dual-Pivot, Side-Pull Caliper Brakes -
    Montague Urban Disk Brakes
The Tektro dual-pivot, side-pull caliper brakes are great for racing or commuting at high speeds. The front and rear units mount at a single point above each tire and have arms that wrap around the tires. When the handlebar brake levers are squeezed one arm pivots at the center and the other arm pivots at the side. This type of brake is great for use on the thin tires found on road bikes. They also provide greater braking power when compared with rim V-brakes.

  11. Rigid Unicrown Fork -
    Montague Urban Fork
The rigid unicrown fork is strong yet lightweight, and it's flexible so you won't feel much flutter when riding a rough road or braking aggressively. The fork provides enough space between the crown and the tire so that a random stick or pinecone won't get wedged in and cause your wheel to stop. It's also easy to mount a water bottle cage on either leg. It has a ramped dropout with a CLIX quick-release latch so you can easily remove the wheel and fold the bike up.

  12. Front and Rear Fenders -
    Montague Fenders
The Urban is equipped with fenders over the front and rear tires. They help prevent water, mud, and road grime from splashing up and soiling your clothes or splashing onto the clothes of your fellow riders. They also help reduce the amount of grit that can get into your bike's moving components. The front fender is constructed of lightweight yet durable plastic that won't break when hit with rocks or other road debris. The rear fender is integrated into the cargo rack and will be located under the wheel when the rack is rotated for use as a kickstand.

Video Transcript for Montague Urban Folding Bike Review

Colin: Hey, everyone. I'm Colin 00:00:02 here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at the Montague Urban folding bike. Now, Montague makes a wide variety of different styles of bike. This one right here called the Urban, is more for people who live in a highly populated area. Maybe you commute to work and you want to be able to fold it up and store it by your desk for the duration of the workday. Or you might even live in an apartment where you want to be able to fold it up and get it up inside your apartment without taking up too much space. Now, I've ridden this bike a lot and just wanted to test it out, and really, it just has a lot of easy transitions when it comes to gears.

Makes for a nice and smooth, high quality ride.On the rear, we're going to have seven speeds, while in the front we'll have three, totaling 21 speeds on our bike. Now, with everything folded up at the end of your day, it's very easy just to go ahead and stow in your trunk for easy carrying and for easy transport. This eliminates having to buy a hitch-mounted bike rack, or even have to buy a roof rack with a bike rack to get your bike from point A to point B.Now, one of the things I really like about all of Montague's bikes is that they don't look like folding bikes at first glance. We're going to see that they do have a nice feature, which you don't see commonly on bikes, which is their bike stand right there. It sits right under the rear tire. It's able to stand straight up on its own without a kickstand and leaning over at all. Now, the RackStand can also be doubled as a stand for any type of small luggage or anything like that you want to set on the back and take with you to your destination. Now, we do have a couple of fenders, and it's just going to help prevent a lot of mud and rock being thrown up onto your legs. The rear one's going to be integrated onto the RackStand.

Now, our frame's going to be constructed out of an aircraft-grade aluminum, so it is going to be durable and lightweight, which means it's going to be very easy to fold up and carry to wherever you need it to be.Now, our frame's also going to have five layers of anti-corrosion finish, just so if you leave your bike outside chained up, it's going to be very resistant to rust and corrosion. Now, usually, Montague likes to make their top tubes very thick all the way through, but with our Urban bike, because it is a road bike, we want to try to eliminate as much weight as we can. They took out the center part of it, separating it into two top tubes, just taking away that weight and make it easier to carry. Now, one thing that's kind of a step up for Montague when compared to a lot of other folding bikes, is that their hinge where the bike turns and folds up is going to be integrated into the seat post tube. That's just going to be able to help support your weight a lot better. A lot of other companies will be making their bikes with the hinge right here. It just isn't as sturdy as it is when it's integrated into the seat post tube, and it's also going to help distribute the weight a lot better along all this tubing. Now, the latch system on our frame and on our wheels are going to have the patented click system from Montague.

Just going to help out with getting it tightened down and latched, and then unlatching it as well. We're also going to have to push up on the latch to be able to get it to unfold. Then when we lock it up, it's almost like it's double secured. Now, when it comes to shifting your bicycle, it's going to be very easy with the Shimano EZ Fire trigger system. You could see, it's just going to be very easy to shift our bike to whatever speed we need it. Now, when operating those shifters, on the rear we're going to have the Shimano Acera derailleur, which is going to make for smooth and easy transitions when you're shifting gears in the rear. While, upfront, we're going to have a Shimano Altus derailleur; and again, that's just going to help making with smooth gear transitions when you want to shift.

Or if you're going uphill and you need to get into a higher gear, it's going to help out a lot with that.Pedaling it with my hands right now, I'll go ahead and shift for you guys, so you see how easy it just goes up to that second gear up front. And we'll also go up to that third gear. Just goes right up, almost without missing a beat. And it's going to be the same thing for the rear. It's just going to go up and down very easy. Those smooth transitions are really key to making sure you have a nice smooth and quality ride. Now for our brake system, we're going to have the Tektro dual-pivot caliper system, which means just we squeeze those brakes, it's going to pull from both sides rather than just one, really making sure we stop when we need to. It's going to be the same system for the back. Now, we're going to have a nice wide saddle to sit on while we're biking. It's going to provide us with a lot more comfort compared to a lot of other seats out there. It's going to have a gel with a lasiter 00:04:12 comfort system, just making sure that you're comfortable when you're going from point A to point B. Now, like most bikes we are going to have an adjustable height with our seat. Just got to undo that latch, come up and down to whatever height fits you the best. Also want to go out and show you how to fold it up to be compact so you can carry wherever you need to. Now, I'm going to start by taking the front wheel off. First thing you want to do is loosen this lever just like a lot of different fork mounts. Then we're going to pull on that circle and then push in at the same time to get it loose. Comes right off just like fork mount. We'll set the tire to the side. Then we're going to come up here. Going to bring the lever off that's in the center of the frame. Now right here, we're going to have to push up to get it to unlock. Then it folds up just like so. I'll turn it around, just so you can see. Turn the handlebars this way. Now, we also have a hook and loop strap which we can take and wrap around the wheel so we can keep it all together. Then we're going to come in and fold down our fender. All we got to do is loosen up this top bolt right here. Once we do that, fold it down like so. Grab the other tire. From here, we can set it right by it. Reach through and grab the frame of our bike and be on our way. Now, if you find yourself needing a little bit more space, you do have the option to remove the seat and also carry it with it. Just is like any other seat. You just undo the clamp, and the seat can come all the way out.Thank you all for watching. That's going to do it for our look at the Montague Urban folding bike.

Good quality and light weight.

I love the bike. Folds fairly easy and I can fold it and get into bag by myself. I did have to make several adjustments to make ride more comfortable. Changed out handlebar tube to a shorter adjustable tube more suitable for a small framed female rider.
