The Montague Navigator is a full-size road bike that offers all the features of a regular road bike with the added benefit of the folding design. This means you can take it with you nearly anywhere you go. Touring cyclists will love it because it fits easily into your trunk or hatch. Students will love it because it's easy to carry into class, a coffee shop, or store in a small dorm. Commuters will love it because you can easily take it with you on a bus, carry it up and down stairs, and store it by your desk. It also has a DirectConnect latch that ensures the bike won't fold up and collapse while you're riding. And, unlike a regular bike, you can store a folding bike in a closet or compartment so it's out of sight in your home or RV.

Quick and Easy Folding Design

Montague Navigator Folding Bike Being Folded

The Navigator takes approximately 20 seconds to fold up. You can do it in 4 easy steps. Undo the latch on the back of the seat post and rotate the cargo basket under the rear tire to convert it to a bike stand. Open the quick-release latch on the front hub and pull the spring to remove the front wheel. Open the CLIX DirectConnect latch under the top tube, and fold the bike in half. Use the included hook-and-loop strap to secure the front wheel to the folded bike.

The bike weighs just 29.5 lbs so it's convenient to carry wherever you go. It's easy to haul up and down stairs, load in and out of your trunk or truck bed, and you don't have to worry about locking it up when not in use.

Montague Navigator

Montague Navigator Folding Bike

  1. Shimano Altus 3-Speed Front Derailleur -
    Montague Navigator Front Derailleur
The Shimano Altus 3-speed front derailleur shifts the top part of the chain between the 3 front sprockets. It works with the Shimano Sora 9-speed rear derailleur to give the drivetrain a total of 27 speeds for you to choose from. The top swing derailleur creates a small profile so you can mount a water bottle to the seat post without obstruction. It's also top pull, so the shifter cable can be only routed to the shifter from the top of the derailleur. Routing from the bottom is standard on road bikes, but the Altus is routed from the top on the Navigator to accommodate the triple crankset.

  2. Shimano Sora 9-Speed Rear Derailleur -
    Montague Navigator Rear Derailleur
The Shimano Sora 9-speed rear derailleur shifts the bottom part of the chain between the 9 rear sprockets. It has a light action for precise shifting that's designed for road cycling. The lightning-quick action is perfect when you need to make sudden gear changes. It's constructed of lightweight alloy that is designed for pavement riding. It works with the Shimano Altus 3-speed front derailleur to give the drivetrain a total of 27 speeds for you to choose from.

  3. 700c Kenda Khan Tires -
    Montague Tires
The 700c Kenda Khan tires have a semi-slick compound that's smooth on paved or gravel roads. They also have aramid and ceramic particles under the tread that prevent punctures. This helps relieve some of the concerns about getting a flat tire when you need to be getting to work on time or home before cold items thaw. The wheels have double-walled rims that provide increased support when compared with single-walled rims. This makes them better at navigating speed bumps, pot holes, and other road hazards. The tubes have Schrader valves with cores that are easy to remove.

  4. RackStand Cargo Rack and Kickstand -
    Montague Allston Cargo Basket
The RackStand is a sturdy steel cargo rack over the rear wheel that lets you carry your gear. This eases your burden so you don't have to carry groceries, textbooks, and other items in a clumsy backpack. You can convert the RackStand into a kickstand by simply opening the latch that attaches it to the seat post and rotating it underneath the tire. This also give you support under the bike for cleaning and maintenance. The fender for the rear wheel is also integrated into the RackStand.

  5. Zena Comfort Saddle -
    Montague Navigator Saddle
The Zena Comfort saddle is made of a high density nylon that lets the sides flex so it stays comfortable even on long rides. It has a long, narrow shape that won't chafe your thighs as you pedal. It's also easy to adjust to accommodate your height, and you can do it in seconds. Just loosen the quick-clamp, slide the seat post to your desired height, and close the quick-clamp.

  6. Kalloy Aluminum Frame with 5-Layer Brushed Coating -
    Montague Navigator Frame
The 19" frame is made out of 6061 aircraft-grade Kalloy aluminum tubing that is lightweight yet stronger than standard steel tubing. It's great for riding over speed bumps, through potholes, and navigating other road hazards. It also has a 5-layer brushed coating that helps prevent corrosion so it's great to use in wet conditions.

  7. Seat Post Hinge with CLIX DirectConnect Latch -
    Montague HInge
The large hinge on the seat post connects the front and rear parts of the frame, keeping the point of articulation off of the top tube. This prevents the frame from developing a potential weak point as can happen with other folding bikes that are hinged on the top tube. It features a CLIX DirectConnect latch that automatically secures the hinge in place when the bike is unfolded. This prevents the bike from accidentally folding up and collapsing while you are riding.

  8. Shimano Sora Trigger Shifters -
    Montague Navigator Trigger Shifters
The Shimano Sora trigger shifters are located on the right side and left side of the handlebars next to the hand brakes. They let you easily shift gears up and down using your thumbs and index fingers without having to move your hands off the grips. The shifter on the right shifts between 9 speeds on the rear derailleur. The shifter on the left shifts between 3 speeds on the front derailleur. An optical display on each shifter lets you easily see what gear you are in.

  9. Adjustable Handlebars with Brake Levers -
    Montague Navigator Brake Levers
You can adjust the angle of the handlebars so that they are in the optimal riding position. To adjust simply loosen the stem expander bolt, rotate the stem to 1 of the 7 preset angle positions, and retighten the stem expander bolt. The brake levers are located in front of each hand grip so you can steer and brake without having to move your hands. The right hand brake lever stops the front wheel and the left hand brake lever stops the rear wheel. The soft, ergonomic handles are easy to grip so your hands won't slide off them while steering.

  10. Chromoly Fork with Disc Mounts -
    Montague Navigator Suspension Fork
The fork is made of chromoly, which is alloy mixed with chromium and molybdenum. It's not as rigid as pure steel or alloy so it absorbs road vibration better and tends to last longer under similar riding and storage conditions. It's also lighter than steel so you can ride faster and under more control. It has a ramped dropout with a CLIX quick-release latch so you can easily remove the wheel and fold the bike up.

  11. Tektro Mira Mechanical Disc Brakes -
    Montague Navigator Disk Brakes
The Tektro Mira mechanical front and rear disc brakes provide greater breaking power and are more suited for hard trail riding when compared with rim V-brakes. They have 160-mm drilled and slotted rotors that attach directly to the wheel hubs and squeeze the pads from both sides of the tire. This ensures your brake pads are always effective, even when hitting large holes and riding in wet conditions. And they won't put wear and tear on your tire's rims like V-brakes do. The single-piece bodies are made of aluminum that resists the heat build-up that many disc brakes can develop with extended use. They also have wear indicators on the pads that identify when to adjust them or replace them.

  12. Front and Rear Fenders -
    Montague Fenders
The Navigator is equipped with fenders over the front and rear tires. They help prevent water, mud, and road grime from splashing up and soiling your clothes or splashing onto the clothes of your fellow riders. They also help reduce the amount of grit that can get into your bike's moving components. The front fender is constructed of lightweight yet durable plastic that won't break when hit with rocks or other road debris. The rear fender is integrated into the cargo rack and will be located under the wheel when the rack is rotated for use as a kickstand.

Video Transcript for Montague Navigator Folding Bike Review

Colin: Hey everyone. I'm Colin here at etrailer.com.Today, we're going to take a look at the Montague Navigator Folding Bike. Now, this is a road-style bike, which also has the added benefit of being good for any light off road use. Now, there's a good amount of benefits to having this folding-style bike. A few might be you're not going to have to invest in a hitch plus a hitch-mounted bike rack to get your bike in your car, or even a roof rack plus a roof bike rack. And it's also helpful for people who might live in an apartment where they're limited on space and they might not be able to get that full-sized bike in their apartment.

It's just going to compact it a lot, make it very easy to store. The Navigator is a great commuter bike, so if you live in a highly-populated area and it's just easier to bike around, whether you got to go to work or other activities like that. And the fold-up aspect means it's going to be convenient for if you need to fold it up and store it by your desk while at work, then you don't have to worry about chaining it up outside of your workplace. What makes the Navigator unique is that, while it is a commuter, road bike type and it's got the thinner tires when compared to other mountain bikes, the tires are a lot wider and knobbier when compared to other road bikes. If you got the occasional gravel path or bike trail that you want to go down, it's going to be able to handle that very well. Now, if you're not too familiar with folding bikes, you may be a bit hesitant to ride it. I can honestly say, at first, I was as well. One of the things I thought about was what if the latch comes undone while I'm riding and it folds in on itself and then I fall over One of the things Montague put in their bike that really put my mind to ease was going to be their direct connect system down here at the bottom and their patented click system as well.

It's going to be two different things. The direct connect is just a clamp holding the frame together, while their click system, right here with the lever, when we pull that off, it does a really great job of providing a lot of tension, keeping the clamp together. But even at this point, we can't fold our bike in on itself. You actually have to push up on the clamp right there, and then you can fold it up.The frame of our bike is going to be constructed out of aluminum. It's going to be very durable, yet lightweight.

It's going to have a nice midnight blue color to it, as well as a five-layer, anti-corrosion finish. Now, one of the things Montague did a great job of is that, with most road bikes, you want to eliminate as much weight as possible to make it easier to ride around and to carry. Now, instead of having the thick top tube right here, like they do on their Paratroopers, they actually had a split tube design, which took out the center right there, taking away some weight. Now, one of the things that makes Montague folding bikes superior to other folding bikes is that their hinge point where the bike folds is integrated into the C-post tube right here. Now, if you think about it, that's going to be able to hold your weight a lot better. When you're sitting on the bike, the weight is coming down, straight through the C-post tube, so it's going to help distribute your weight throughout the triangle tubing down here a lot better. On top, we're going to have a really nice wide set of handlebars, so when you're riding along, your hands aren't going to get too sore from kind of being down.

We're also going to have the Shimano Sora trigger system. It's going to make for nice and easy transitions when you're trying to shift up or down. And you can see we get to also access our breaks very easy. You can also adjust the angle on your handlebars if you would be more comfortable with it more tilted up towards you or even tilted away. You just take the included tool and loosen up that Allen bolt right there, and then you can tilt it whichever way you desire, and then tighten it back up. Don't forget to do that. One thing that Montague includes on a lot of their bikes is their rack stand, which is integrated into the rear axle. Now, this stand can be used for a couple of different things. When it's up in this position, you can use it as a storage rack. You can put your water bottles on there. You can put a bag on there and strap it down. Now, something to keep in mind is that, if you have stuff on it, you're not going to be able to use it as a stand for the bike. The Navigator's going to have a nine by three gearshift setup. So, in the back here, we're going to have nine speeds, while on the front, we have three. We're also going to be equipped with a Shimano Altus derailer in the front, as well as the Shimano Sora in the back. Now, those derailers are going to make for nice and easy transitions for when you're shifting. With the rack stand up, I can actually show you guys the derailers at work. We'll just start pedaling. We'll start here in the back. You can see very little delay when you're going up or down. Now, it's important to have those nice and easy transitions, so that if you're ever going up a hill or something like that and you need to downshift, you can get that done very quick. Here in the front's going to be the same thing. Get up to third gear if we need to. Go back down very easy, just like that. The bike's also going to include two fenders. That first one here at the front just goes right over the back of our front wheel. It's going to help prevent a lot of rock and other debris being thrown up on you while you're riding. The rear fender's actually going to be integrated onto the rack stand, and again, it's just going to prevent a lot of rock and debris being thrown up to people behind you. We're going to be equipped with a set of mechanical disc brakes on our navigator. It's just going to be a good upgrade from those rim pad brakes. This is going to work with well with giving you more braking power, and it's also not going to compromise your braking power in any wet conditions. And it's also going to come equipped with reflectors. We're going to have one on the front of the handlebars right here, another one on the back that's integrated onto the rack stand, one on both tires, and two on each pedal. Now, when it comes to folding up the bike, it's a pretty simple process. You want to start by putting the rack stand down, like so. Now, we're going to come up to the front wheel and remove it. It's also got the patented click system, meaning that when we undo the clamp right there, we still can't get the wheel off. We're going to have to pull in on that circle, and then push the axle through just slightly so we can get the forks off. Then, we'll just undo the latch on our direct connect system. Push in on your direct connect, then we can start to fold it up. It's easy if you just flip it around, bring it to yourself. You want to make sure the handlebars are angled in.Each bike is going to come with a hook and loop strap. What we're going to do is tear it all the way off, wrap it around our back wheel, and come back. Once you put that together, it's going to make sure that the bike does not fold out on us while it's in storage. Now, we'll just grab our front wheel, set it against the front right here. An easy way to grab it is to reach your hand through the spokes of you front tire, and you can pick it up like that.Thank you all for watching. That's going to do it for our look at the Montague Navigator Folding Bike.

I was pleased to see that eTrailer carried the Montague line of folding bicycles and as always appreciated their in-depth reviews and product videos. The Navigator bikes with full sized wheels and compact folding design are perfect for carrying on our boat as we complete the Great Loop. We needed reliable, comfortable means of transport to explore the various towns where we will dock, and for provision runs to the grocery, hardware store, etc along the way. Paired with a collapsable bike trailer - we are set. I appreciate the designs and quality of the Montague line, and the confidence in purchasing from eTrailer as they ship quickly, communicate very well during the delivery process, and customer assistance has been great with all of my orders.

by:

The customer service by Alex was amazing. The bike got delayed in shipping by UPS, and he tracked it down and communicated with me daily. Very rare experience in this day and age. Great company

by:

DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE UNLESS YOU ARE A BICYCLE MECHANIC!!! EXTREMELY POORLY ASSEMBLED. WILL HAVE TO TAKE TO BIKE SHOP TO GET WORKING. THE FRONT BRAKES WERE NOT ASSEMBLED CORRECTLY. I HAD TO TAKE THEM APART TO REASSEMBLE. PIECE OF SH#T.REGRET THIS PURCHACE.

Perfect Water-prevention Nylon! Good job!

I
was moving from California to Oregon. It was raining and when I stopped by Gas station then opened it. The bag was a SWIMMING POOL. moving items in the bag were drowned.

I am asking Etrailer.com for a refund.

This perfect bag spoiled some expensive moving items.

Excellent bike - a real bike (26”wheels) that folds into a compact package. We have purchased 2 of these from eTrailer for use on our boat when traveling to various marinas and towns. I did replace the seat on my wife’s for a bit more comfort. Very good quality bike for the cost. As always - we buy with confidence from eTrailer. Their communication is excellent through the process and shipping is fast.

by:

I am happy with your company and the products offered.
My rooftop bag is what I needed. It’s okay quality but the tie down straps are really low quality. I would have paid more for a beefier strap(s) it’s going to be the fail point for certain.

by:

Everything is great except the wrong sized bolt for the front fender that came in the box.

by:

We received the carrier yesterday, It looks very well made and it holds the items we needed it for. It will be a few weeks before we take it on the road, so may sign back in with an update around the first of August to let you know how it did riding on top of the van.

by:

Great value! Well constructed, roomy rooftop carrier, with sturdy tie straps that we used to attach the carrier to our SUV's crossbars. We have not tested this in wet weather, but it did the job for our summer travel.

by:

This cargo carrier bag worked out well for our summer camping trip. I love that the bag is simple, but good looking, without any bright, flashy brand name logos that other bags have. It was very easy to install.

by:

The product met our expectations and worked perfectly for our 13 hour drive to our destination! We did end up driving through a little rain and everything stayed dry! I would recommend this product to anyone in need of a little extra storage space for their vehicle! It was well worth the extremely reasonable price and will definitely be used again!

by:

Got this for a move across country. Got here in good time & in good condition. I would definitely recommend, it's the best most affordable cargo bag I've found. My boyfriend & I fit 2 large suit cases, 2 pillows, & a comforter. Only complaint is that the plastic strap harness could be beefed up. He was able to work with it though. assembly to vehicle was simple.

by:

The ordering was easy. The product shipped and received on time. I am completely satisfied with the rooftop carrier.

by:

Awesome project needed something for my 1996 Jeep Cherokee that was cheap and durable just used it on my trip to Walt Disney World, for the price and size it's an awesome product. Ran into some rain and nothing got wet.

by:

Served the purpose I needed it to, worked great. Make sure to follow the instructions because if it’s not put on correctly and the straps aren’t tucked in, it can be noisey.

by:

The carrier arrived very quickly-two days from when my order was placed. Very happy with the quality/ease of assembly of the product. Have not had a chance to use it as yet.

by:

Happy with the product. i drive a Kia Soul, this will fit perfectly and we will be able to store our excess items when we return home to Canada.

by:

For the price, this is excellent. I've used it camping, and no problems. I don't know why these bags are black? They heat up so badly!

by:

Product was used once and worked well. Next week I will be using it again.
I recommend this product.

by:

product met my expectation. the bag however must be rigid with content, any folding or flapping at highway speed deteriorates the material where the fold exists, fraying the area to bare threads. excellent for camping equipment, providing you pre-wrap in plastic

by:

Product came in a timely manner. Won't be using it until this summer but it looks and feels durable and spacious. Like how you can move the starting/stopping place of the zipper.
