Bulldog DC9

The DC9.0 integrated off-road recovery winch lets you pull your stuck vehicle out of mud, snow, water or a ditch and up steep inclines. The winch is fully integrated so it's ready to install right out of the box - just bolt the winch and roller fairlead to a mounting plate (sold separately), bolt the plate to your bumper or grille guard, and run the power lead to your vehicle's battery. The 1-piece winch body protects the internal components from water, rocks, and debris, and it's sealed to meet IP66 standards for water and weather resistance. The winch also includes dual brakes to ensure reliable load holding, an 82' wire rope with a roller fairlead, and a circuit breaker that automatically cuts power to the winch if the motor begins to overheat.

Heavy-Duty, 5.8-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog DC9

The DC9.0 features a 5.8-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 9,000 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. The motor is sealed for water and weather resistance. And it's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the die-cast aluminum housing, steel drum, steel motor tube, silver alloy battery terminals, and steel hardware.

Circuit Breaker

There is a circuit breaker located inside the motor that monitors the temperature of the motor. It will interrupt the flow of power from the battery to the winch motor if the motor begins to overheat. When the internal elements of the circuit breaker have cooled it will automatically reset and you can use the winch again.

Sealed Contactor

Bulldog DC9 seald contactor

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 400-amp contactor - contained within the winch housing over the drum - is sealed to meet IP66 specifications for water and weather resistance. The silver alloy terminals and stainless-steel hardware are also corrosion resistant.

Free-Spool Clutch with Rotating Handle

DC9.0 Free-Spooling Clutch with rotating ring gear

The DC9.0 has a free-spool clutch with a rotating ring gear that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull and turn the spring-loaded handle. To reengage the clutch, lift and rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a hardened-steel, 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The die-cast aluminum gearbox has a rust-resistant black matte powder coat finish and is sealed to keep out moisture.

Automatic, Load-Holding Mechanical and Dynamic Brakes

This winch includes both a spring-activated mechanical brake and a dynamic brake. This dual braking system provides a physical brake inside the drum and supplemental braking force generated by the winch motor. The 2 brakes operate simultaneously to ensure more reliable load holding when compared with single-brake recovery winches.

The automatic mechanical brake securely holds a load and prevents unintentional payout (or creep). When the winch motor is stopped, a large spring coil inside the drum expands to press against the spring chamber. The pressure of the spring on the wall of the spring chamber creates resistance that prevents the drum from rotating. This spring contracts when the winch is in gear to allow the drum to rotate.

When the winch is pulling the rope in or paying it out, the motor is not applying resistance to the drum. When you stop powering the rope in or out, the dynamic brake uses resistance from the motor to help hold the load.

Waterproof, Hand-Held Remote

Bulldog DC9 wired remote

A wired, hand-held remote with a 12' lead and in/out rocker switch is included so you can control your winch from a safe distance. Simply plug the waterproof remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it. There is also a wireless remote kit (BD500527 - sold separately) that lets you operate the winch from up to 90' away.

Bulldog DC9

The remote plugs into a port on the on the side of the power unit. It has a rubber plug that prevents water from getting into the unit when you are not using the remote.

Wire Rope

Bulldog DC9 wire rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that resists abrasions and is able to withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rope dampener (BD500549 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rope dampener helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

Bulldog DC9 steel hook

The removable steel hook is made of high-strength forged steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. It has a black powder coat finish and zinc-plated rollers that are tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with the included steel hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate that bolts to your bumper (sold separately) or grille guard (sold separately). Most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

This winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The die-cast aluminum housing creates a strong and rigid winch body. It also helps to protect the wire rope and internal components from water, rocks, and debris. The winch body, internal components, and remote are sealed to IP66 standards. This means that the winch remains fully operational in pouring rain. The copper terminals and carbon steel hardware are corrosion resistant. The winch body also has a black matte powder coat finish that is corrosion resistant.

Installation

ComeUp Winch installation

The winch is fully integrated so it's easy to install right out of the box. Simply bolt the winch and fairlead to a mounting plate (sold separately), bolt the plate to your bumper, and run the included wiring to your vehicle's battery. The cables are color coded and printed with the AWG for easy installation. Alternatively, you can bolt the winch and fairlead to the mounting points on many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Quick connects (BD500607 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer9,00020
2nd Layer7,35044-5/16
3rd Layer6,20072-1/8
4th Layer5,40095

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 9,000-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 6,000 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

drawing

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BD500602 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (sold separately) with a bow shackle (BD500604 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Electric Winch - DC9.0 Integrated Off-Road Winch - BD500600

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. And today we're gonna take a look at this Bulldog DC 9.0 integrated off-road winch. This standard duty recovery winch with a 5.8 horsepower series-wound motor is going to give you powerful, fast, and safe line pulling giving you the ability to quickly and safely recover a stuck vehicle out of the mud, snow, water, a ditch, and up steep inclines. The motor is more powerful and more efficient and produces more torque than a permanent magnet motor. The rated line pull with a single layer of wire rope around the drum is 9,000 pounds static load. And the vehicle recovery capacity is 6,000 pounds.

So this winch is going to be perfect for your work truck, Jeeps, and other off-road vehicles. It is designed for vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 6,000 pounds. This is an integrated one piece design. All of the components are permanently mounted within the winch's housing. And what that does is that's going to protect the motor, the contactor and the wiring from rocks and debris.

It's also going to help reduce installation time. The winch housing and internal components are sealed and waterproof to IP66 standards. So what that means is that this winch is going to remain fully functional even in pouring rain. The sealed 400-amp contactor transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch's 12 volt DC motor. And these battery leads are color coded and printed with AWG size for easy installation.

The battery lead wire is two gauge and the battery lead length is about five feet long. The recommended battery size for maximum power for this winch is 650 cold cranking amps. The circuit breaker is going to shut the power off to the winch if the motor overheats. And then it's going to automatically reset when the motor has cooled and then the winch will be ready to use again. This has a line pull at zero pounds.

It has a a power draw of 80 amps and a line speed of 20 feet per minute. A line pull at 9,000 pounds has a power draw of 360 amps and the line speed of seven feet per minute. This has a duty cycle of S3 5%, which translates to approximately 44 seconds on and 14 minutes off at maximum load. Now this does include a plastic handheld remote with this 12 foot lead that's going to let you operate the winch from a safe distance. A wireless remote is available, it is sold separately, but if you're interested in checking that out, you can find that on the related product section of this product page. That wireless remote will let you control this winch from up to 90 feet away. In regards to this included wired remote, you would just simply plug it into this port right here and then you'll be ready to go. Now the free-spooling clutch is going to ensure fast rope payout and reduce wear on the motor. And as you can see, I have this currently in the engage position, but then for free spool you just simply rotate it clockwise, and then that's going to allow you to freely pull this out. And then when you're ready to put this back into the engage position, you turn it counterclockwise, and then that will put the clutch back into the engage position. So a relatively easy operation right there. Now the 3/8 of an inch diameter, 82 foot long aircraft-grade galvanized steel cable is very strong and abrasion resistant. And as you can see, it includes this 3/8 of an inch galvanized steel hook. And the drum dimensions is 2 1/2 inches in diameter and about 8 13/16 inches long overall. The included steel roller fairlead has a pretty thick frame on it. And the four rollers are going to reduce friction and wear on your rope. And the black powder coat finish with the zinc-plated rollers are gonna do a great job in resisting corrosion. The distance between the roller fairlead mounting holes, let me just turn these here a little bit so you can see those mounting holes on each side here. The distance between those holes center to center is 10 inches. And I do wanna mention that this roller fairlead does not mount to the winch directly. It typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate that bolts to your bumper, and that mounting plate is sold separately, or to a grill guard which is also sold separately. Most aftermarket mounts will include these tabs. Now the automatic mechanical and dynamic brakes are going to ensure reliable 100% load holding. The mechanical spring brake creates resistance on the drum to stop rotation and hold the load. And the dynamic brake uses resistance from the motor to stop the drum rotation. This has an all-steel three-stage planetary gear train that's going to provide increased drum speed when compared with worm drives and one or two stage planetary gear trains. The gear ratio is 230 to one. This die-cast aluminum housing with this matte black powder coat finish is going to resist corrosion. And the steel motor tube is going to resist that internal corrosion. And the overall dimensions of just the winch itself, not including this fairlead, but just of the winch itself, the overall length from end to end we're sitting right at about 21 5/16 inches long. The overall width at the widest point we're sitting at about 6 1/2 inches wide. And then the overall height at the tallest point, we're sitting at about 9 7/8 inches tall. This does have a four-bolt mounting pattern. and that is measured at 10 inches by 4 1/2 inches center to center. And this is a a pretty hefty winch weighing in a little over 82 pounds. So to install this, you're just going to simply bolt this winch and the fairlead to a mounting plate, which is sold separately. You're gonna bolt the plate to your bumper and then run the included wiring to your vehicle's battery. Or you can bolt the winch and fairly to the mounting points on many aftermarket bumpers and grill guards. Quick connects are sold separately. And they are available if you need them for making, removing, and reinstalling the winch easy. And you can check those out here at etrailer.com. Well that's gonna conclude our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
