Video Transcript for Custer Light Mounting Box Review and Installation

Shane: Hi I'm Shane from etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Custer light mounting box. The box is going to be a steel construction, black powder coat finish. Really going to help resist any rust or corrosion. What I really like about these lights, if you notice our over light here, it's basically encapsulated inside of the box, so it's really going to protect the light. The opening for the light is going to be 6-3/4 wide, 2-1/2".

The box itself is going to be 8-1/2 by 3-1/2 by 3-3/4. Here we have it mounted on a dump trailer. The reason we put these on here is, the other lights they had on we're open and they didn't have a steel construction around them. And they we're breaking quite a bit. So this steel construction around this lighter holding this light in is really going to help protect this light and keep the light from breaking. But not only is it going to work on a dump trailer, but it's going to really work on any trailer to help protect that light.

For lights, our over light here, I'm going to recommend LED lights. They're going to last a lot longer. They're going to draw a lot less power. And you're not going to have to replace bulbs like you do incandescent lights. In order for the old light to work with this steel holder, it is going to need the ring.As I mentioned before, it covers ...

Or that box is really going to help protect your light. If you notice on our flatbed trailer, the only protection we have is right here on the top and on the back. The rest of our light is pretty much open. So adding that box onto this bracket is really going to add a ton of protection for your light. You're not going to have to replace them as often because they're not going to get broke.

Very easy installation. You can weld them on if you want to or you can do what we did and just drill a couple holes and mount them right to the bracket itself. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's walk you through how to get it installed. To start our installation, we need to remove our old tail light. We can remove our light and we're going to cut the wires coming out of the back of it. We're just going to cut them off right about there. Now since our bracket already has holes in it from the last light, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take this cover, I'm going to hold it up and center it, and from the back I'm going to take a paint marker, I'm going to mark where those holes are on the housing and then drill them.Let's start with a small drill bit for a pilot hole. We're going to draw our holes to whatever size bolts we're going to be using. What I like to do is once I get them drilled, because we're going to be running our wires through it, is clean them up a little bit. So if you take a bit like this, go on the outside, like that. Go inside and do the same thing. And it'll get some of the burrs off. Make it clean. You can take paint. I'm going to use a paint marker. I'm going to cover that bare metal up to reduce the risk of any rust or corrosion later on. I'm going to use a hex bolt, flat washer, lock washer and nut. What I'm going to do is typically you would see the bolt going this way holding it in and your nut, flat washer and lock washer on the outside. What I'm going to do since we have this whole housing is I'm actually going to run it this way. It'll help protect the threads from getting crud on them and it'll be a lot easier if we need to change it out later on, for any reason, to get the nut off the bolt head or off the bolt itself. For these bolts I'm using a 13 millimeter socket and wrench. Then repeat that same process on the other side. Then we can get our light installed. Our center hole here, is going to be for our wiring. Go ahead and feed it all out. Once you get your light hooked up, you're going to push it inside the rubber grommet. Get your wiring hooked up, then you're ready to go. I run test out the lights to make sure they're working correctly. Tail lights, brake lights, right turn, left turn. Once you've tested out your lights, you're ready to go. That's going to do it for our look at the Custer light mounting box.

Bought these boxes so I can make some custom tail lights for my 51 Chevy. They shipped quickly. And seem to be well-built boxes. After I paint match them to the vehicle I drilled holes and installed them

by:

These light boxes are of good solid construction. They are powder coated which is supposed to be better or tougher than paint. That being said, both of these lamp boxes have chips to bare steel out of the coating. One even has light surface rust formed so not really a fresh break to the coating. They were placed into their shipment packaging from the manufacturer this way as they were padded quite well by etrailer.com prior to shipment to my shop. The padding ensured there was no damage in transit so simple deduction places lack of quality control upon the manufacturer. This is not a problem in my application as they will be painted body color of the unit of which they will install, but to other's whom plan to use them as supplied, it would be a disappointment. I know etrailer.com would stand behind the product but as mentioned, it is "no issue" with my application.

nice construction

After having these boxes on my trailer for a year they've held up really well and we're very easy to install. They were exactly what I was looking for and the price was right in my budget. I would definitely recommend these to anybody looking for a set and I will definitely order from you guys again if I ever need anything.

by:

I had to find a light mounting system that could take abuse and survive. These were the ticket as they have resisted atv collisions and being backed into stationary objects numerous times.

by:

They are exactly as they are described.

These guys at etrailer were very helpful and excellent in communication.

thank you very much,
Dan
