etrailer cargo carrier

Note: This is not rated for use on the back of an RV or motorhome.

This cargo carrier lets you transport your gear on the back of your vehicle. It tilts down for cargo area access even when it's loaded with gear, and you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. It has raised side rails that help contain your gear and provide tie-down points, and the steel mesh floor offers stability for your cargo.

Tilting and Folding Design

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier tilts down - even when it's loaded with gear - so you can easily access your vehicle's rear cargo area. Before you tilt the carrier make sure your cargo is strapped down and secure. Simply support the front edge with one hand, remove the pins (standard 5/8" or 16 mm diameter 2" hitch pins) located in the upper and center shank holes, and gently lower the carrier.

etrailer cargo carrier

When the carrier is not being used, you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle. This lets you fit into your garage and other tight parking spaces without removing the basket. To fold the basket up, just remove the pin from the center shank hole, fold the rack up toward your vehicle, then reinsert the pin into the bottom shank hole.

Raised Side Rails

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier has raised side rails that help keep your cargo in place. The rails also provide multiple anchor points for a cargo net, bungee straps, or other tie-downs.

Angled and Extended Shank

etrailer cargo carrieretrailer cargo carrier

The shank on this carrier is raised to improve ground clearance, and to make it easier for you to load and unload your cargo. It also extends the basket away from your vehicle, which helps prevent contact with your bumper or rear-mounted spare tire when the carrier is folded up.

Easy Assembly and Durable Construction

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier is easy to assemble. Simply bolt it together with the included hardware. The basket is made of heavy-duty steel with a rust-resistant black powder coat finish, and it has an easy-to-clean mesh floor. Reflectors (sold separately) are available to increase the carrier's visibility at night. You can also add a light kit (sold separately), which is required if your gear blocks your vehicle's tail lights.

Automatic Hitch Pin Hole Alignment

Alignment Collar

The stop collar automatically aligns the pin holes on the shank and your hitch every time you install the carrier. It prevents you from having to get on your hands and knees to check for pinhole alignment. It's quick and easy to install, just slide the collar onto the shank, insert the carrier into your hitch, align the pin holes, slide the collar up against your hitch, and tighten down the bolt with included hand knobs. Once it's set up you never have to adjust it again.

Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin

etrailer cargo carrier

An anti-rattle hitch pin is included for securing the carrier to the hitch receiver. Align the hole in the shank with the hole in your vehicle's hitch, insert the pin into the hole, and secure with the clip. This will reduce noise and movement of the carrier in your hitch.

Super disappointed in this etrailer purchase. The product came in a large box that was fully intact and not damaged. The actual cargo basket was meticulously wrapped and appeared to be brand new as expected. The other components however, like the arm, were in boxes that were smashed, old, worn, and had multiple layers of old tape. The arm itself was scratched and banged up, even rusty in spots. Clearly it was used or had been a returned item. If I wanted a dented, gouged, and rusty Cargo Carrier I would have purchased one used, for half the price. This is not the quality I expect from etrailer.. I have purchased many racks and other items from this company and usually the quality is outstanding. This time they dropped the ball. I have since read other reviews and it is apparent that this is not an isolated incident. I'd have sent it back if it wasn't so damn heavy and awkward to lug around.

Holds all my gear. Just what I was hoping for. Now my dogs have the car all to themselves.
Really bummed that there are "Made in China" stickers all over it. I went with etrailer because I thought they were a USA company. I guess no one can turn down that cheap slave labor. Hopefully my gear does not end up on the highway.

etrailer.com IS a US company with our headquarters located in Wentzville, MO about 40 miles west of St. Louis. The carrier is manufactured for us overseas in China.

This carrier worked out great. The tilt down feature is helpful to have but I didn't really need it. However, the fold up feature was helpful when driving around, so I recommend that as a convenience.

The only thing I had trouble with was the hitch bolt. I have a Thule bike rack that I've used with my truck hitch receiver and never had a problem, but this rack's hitch bolt was a real pain to get in at first. Don't be dismayed. With the rack off of the vehicle, I used some WD-40 and some lithium grease on the bolt and then used an adjustable wrench to screw it in and out a number of times. I noticed a bunch of either paint or metal shards gumming up the threads on the bolt each time I removed it. After about 5 times of screwing it in and out, wiping off the bolt with a towel, adding some more grease once in a while, it got to the point that I could screw it in and out by hand pretty easily. Problem solved.

I'm really happy with this rack. It fit two big coolers of food and beer plus beach umbrellas and other stuff. It's really strong and sturdy. The biggest issue was not the weight on the rack, but whether the rear suspension on the Highlander could hold it with our other junk in the back plus passengers. :-)

Its been a year since I purchased this and I used it on another vacation, driving through multiple states. Its very sturdy and I continue to be pleased with this purchase. I will say I had some trouble with the hitch bolt again. It was impossible to screw in by hand and using an adjustable wrench is a tedious chore. I didnt have time before leaving on the trip to do what I did the last time wd-40lithium. It would be nice to have a better locking system...something other than a bolt that screws in. Ill have to look for that. All things considered, Im still happy with this rack and I would still recommend it. Im sure Im going to be using this for many more years.

This will work on a Jeep Library if you add a hitch extension. I welded an 7” extension to the receiver opening. (No rattling) If you weld it, make sure it’s level or the carrier won’t be. With the spare on the back of my Jeep the carrier wouldn’t fold up. Does now with room to go. I have a Motorhome and this is my tow vehicle. Carrier is used mainly for bikes.
I was tired of booking up my small boat trailer with spare in the way. Now ball is accessible. This is a well built carrier. Doesn’t move or rattle at all. Thanks etrailer.

4/12/2021

As you can see, my previous review it it it is primarily used for bicycles on trips on my tow vehicle. Hav used it only once in that capacity since I got it because of this Covid lockdown. Worked very good. Used occasionally on the Liberty for carrying large bags of pet food, topsoil, etc. when I’m not using a pickup. No complaints about this carrier.

by:

Great luggage rack! 4,500 miles in 3 weeks on the first trip and it performed exactly as intended. It didn't sag or rattle. We used a Rola bag with ratchet straps for extra stability. We loaded luggage, too many other bags and fishing gear for a family of four. Better than buying a bigger vehicle. As the picture shows, it also makes a great tailgate/table for fishing or camping.

Jimmy

5/6/2022

The luggage rack worked well until the hitch receiver bolt sheared off when I tried to unscrew. We then needed to cut the shank and the receiver from the truck. I was told the replacement part I needed would not be sold to me individually and I would need to buy a complete luggage rack. I offered to buy it and did not ask for a free replacement. I was also told the product has a lifetime warranty but that the warranty would not be honored because I cut it from my hitch receiver. That doesnt make sense. Why would an American company not offer the part that needs to be replaced? This is the USA. We fix what needs to be fixed instead of just buying another one. I am very disappointed. Now Ill need to find an American company that will produce the replacement part. Maybe etrailer will help before its too late. I really hope so.

Sierra K.

6/21/2022

At this time, we do not have replacement shanks available for this cargo carrier. If the bolt was left on the vehicle for a long period of time, it may have rusted inside. In that case, some lubricant can be used to try and penetrate the rust. If that does not work, you can drill it out with a bit.

by:

Receiver arm snapped 10 miles into the trip. It looks like the arm was made of cast iron which would explain why it couldn't handle the 200lb generator. I would not recommend this product to carry anything more than folding chairs until the manufacturer quits using cast iron.

Honestly this is very unusual for this to happen. Customer Service will be in touch with you to have this carrier returned.

We really like the concept of this cargo Rack. It folds up to sit flat and it sits back far enough so we can get the doors of our Sprinter. The down side and the thing that has us most concerned is that it wont sit level when in the loading and travel position. In fact it seems to tilting back more and more with age. We do not over load it I am guess but I don’t think we ever put more that about 200 lbs on it. Also it seems to be rusting a bit from the inside but then we do live in the NW where is rains a lot. I have inclosed some pictures below

by:

Bought this as a slightly used product from etrailer.com and it worked great for Holiday travel. Fits our Subaru Ascent perfectly & provides that little added space we needed without putting on our roof box. Only disappointment was the parts bag was not sealed and parts were everywhere in the box with 2 missing washers (easily replaced) …see pics. Product is sturdy and no sway like stated by etrailer description.

by:

After searching for one of these and finding them I chose to go with this one, "Made In The USA" rather than one "Made In China." The price difference was $5.00! That's all! I have had BAD experiences with items made in China. Workmanship is sub-par to say the least. I purchased this one and could not be happier with it! Quality is awesome, works flawlessly and is a great bang for the buck. If you're looking for a cargo carrier for your hitch/receiver buy THIS one! Shipping was quick also!!! E-Trailer is a great dealer with QUALITY products!!

by:

The cargo trailer showed up within four days of purchasing online. The hardware package was 100% complete and it was very easy to put together. I am astonished that they could offer free shipping and this cargo carrier for the price. Thank you for over delivering on expectations. I would certainly do business with etrailer again without hesitation.

by:

I’m totally psyched this came earlier than expected. We are going on a trip next weekend with our Jeep Wrangler to Barnstable Beach out in Cape Cod. It took maybe half hour 45 minimum to put together and was very easy. After assembling of course I had to see how it fit and couldn’t be any happier it is perfect. I have an oversized tire and had concerns of it fitting past the spare tire but thankfully Etrailer has the measurements online and I took measurement prior to ordering. I just have one problem my spare tire is big so it doesn’t let the rack fold up enough to allow pin in to secure it in the upward position but I can easily modify and drill the hole a little bigger, I literally need 1/8 - 1/16 of an inch to get pin in. I guess I could try letting air out of spare tire that may work. I can’t wait to try it out it will definitely make a huge difference in packing up the Jeep. Thank you etrailer for the speedy delivery and and the great information about the product online. It’s great to have good info prior to purchasing.

by:

This has been a great solution for me. It is versatile and very sturdy. I use it on the back of my 40' 5th wheel. I wanted to transport my e-bike, as well as other bulky items. I built a bike rack in the cargo tray, added tie-down D-rings to secure the additional items.

by:

Positives first. This is a very sturdy cargo carrier and seems to be made well. Good welding, solid build. Negatives. Packaging to protect the product was sub par as mine arrived damaged(bent). It was fixable with a pair of vise grips and some black paint so I didn’t send it back. My biggest problem with it is that it doesn’t allow me to use a standard locking pin to secure it to the receiver on my vehicle. I have to use the threaded pin, nut, and cotter pin, which are supplied, but has no theft protection. Overall it is a decent product but a couple of small changes would make it better.

I hate to hear that it arrived with minor damage that needed to be repaired. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. We do have a threaded lock that will work for the carrier. It is part # e99047.

by:

So incredibly happy with the cargo carrier. Assembly wasn't too bad. It took my husband and I maybe an hour. Did a dry run the weekend before putting it onto our Yukon. Took us about a half hour. We were so happy with how easy it was once we got the hang of it. I'd definitely recommend buying the bag to go along with it. We were pleasantly surprised at how much stuff we could fit into the carrier. We didn't even really notice any difference when driving the vehicle. We went away for a long weekend and ended up just tilting the empty carrier up the whole weekend vs taking it off. It was so easy. We can't wait until we get to use this again!

by:

Step 1 of assembly, the holes do not line up between the basket halves and the connecting bars. This is integral to the structure’s assembly, making it impossible to do. That and the hardware was loose all over the package but luckily seemed to all be there by chance. Seems there was no QA before shipping…makes me quite nervous about installing this on my vehicle.

I would start both screws with your fingers so that it is finger-tight, then torque them intermittently so that they are both tightened in the same degree. If you tighten one bolt all of the way, then do the next, it may not end up straight.

by:

Overall it bolted together easily with my 14 yo daughter and I using ratchets and a supplied utility wrench. Looks fine and worked out for our camping trip. Tilts easily and I checked if any nuts loosened on the road and none did. My driveway of course is angled such that it scrapes when it and the Outback are fully loaded. And it scraped a couple times on the trip in commercial ramped type approaches to businesses but I figure as soon as it rusts there it’ll scrape again and clear that off. Probably less in the car and it would clear. I do wish it had tie down loops vs using the cross bars/frame etc so the hooks when metal don’t scratch it to hell and gone. I used ratchet straps, plastic hooked bungees and metal hooked bungees and loops would’ve been preferred. It did mean our Spaniel could come and play though too!!

by:

Qx60. I travel a lot and this cargo carrier does the job. I already crossed North America twice with it. Still running strong. Becomes rusty over the time but seems durable

by:

Product iss great! Used this carrier in combination with the etrailer cargo bag (Item #988501) on our 13 hour trip from IL to beaches of SC and never heard or felt it.

I didn't realize that this carrier hitch has a threaded hitch pin for anti-rattle, so I didn't have to use my standard hitch anti-rattle device. The assembly and installation were pretty easy and the included hitch collar made subsequent attachments to my hitch a breeze. While the included wrenches we ok, I would recommend using a socket wrench as it is much more suited for the job.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my 2014 GMC Acadia hatch had just enough clearance to open without using the tilt feature. BTW, the tilt feature on a loaded carrier definitely requires more than one person.

Only con I can think of is that the pins for the folding feature do not slide in very easily, maybe because the holes don't line up perfectly. It definitely takes some twisting of the pins at the same time as fiddling withe the angle of the carrier to get the pin thru. It is do-able, but takes some "practice" for sure.

EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTE:
After our trip I was looking for a locking hitchpin (item #e99047) and noticed that the price of the carrier was about $30 less than when I originally purchased a month earlier. etrailer does have a competitor price match guarantee policy, but nothing specific to etrailer branded products. I asked them about this and they immediately refunded the price difference. Regardless of if the had done this, I still would have purchased the locking hitchpin, but this proves their excellence in customer service.

by:

I'm kind of cautious on most items that we are purchasing - always wanting to get nice quality for a fair price. We've used our cargo trailer multiple times since we purchased it a year ago and it has worked out great for us. I can't say we've gone on any major trips with it but our little trips to haul things from one location to another have gone well. The trailer fits nicely on our vehicle, no rattling during the drive.
I would recommend this cargo trailer!

by:

I thought it was going to be far enough out to clear my ladder but it isn’t. Only reason for two star review, don’t think it’s really a problem with the product. Going to make an insert for my hitch to move it out a couple inches.

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

5/26/2023

I must admit that I am having a little trouble picturing how the carrier is working with your ladder. Would you be able to send a picture? Be careful when using an extender with the hitch as does reduce hitch capacity by 50 percent which will affect how much you can carry with the cargo carrier.

by:

Excellent Product. Easy to assemble and very sturdy. Not to heavy and straight forward installation. Drove 600 miles to Florida for vacation and loaded a bunch of cargo on a Rola Bag. Everything arrived dry and clean. For the first time I could see through the rear window. No rattle, no noise and no issues. I own a Toyota Sequoia and the anti-rattle bolt is barely long enough to install the safety pin. I installed the bolt without the provided washer and it work without any issues. I did order the 2.5" bolt e98911 to resolve this issue. Love the folding feature. very glad I bought this version as I have not removed the rack during the whole vacation. Bought the Lights and Brackets also. If you do not have a 15/16 wrench or socket, I recommend you buy one...makes the install much faster than with the provided tool. The tool does the job in case you don't have a 15/16. Etrailer personnel were amazing.

by:

Easy Assembly, easy install. Put it on my draw tight 2in hitch and a 2019 Nissan pathfinder. While tilted up, you will be unable to open the hatch very far. But tilt it down or if loaded, tilt it down further and hatch can open. No issues so far. Going on the first trip with it this weekend.

Rightline tells me that they don't have any vehicle specific fit information, but that the clips will work with most vehicles. I've used similar products and the past, and unless this is for a one-time use, you'll be much better off installing a roof rack or using existing roof rails to secure a roof mounted cargo bag. If you are carrying 300 lbs of cargo plus a 48 lb cargo carrier, you'll come close to maxing out the other hitches. Next, for the cargo carrier, I recommend the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874. It has mesh, it folds, it tilts, and it can carry up to...

  • Hitch Extender to Use with etrailer Cargo Carrier # e89974
You didn't say how long of a hitch extender you need but the part # HE06 is 7 inches long and would help you get additional clearance for the etrailer cargo carrier part # e98874 to fold up like you are wanting. You should note that when you use a hitch extender like this you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent due to the increased leverage and movement created.

  • Folding Cargo Carrier And Cargo Bag For 2014 Toyota 4Runner
The first thing you will want to do is measure to see how much clearance you have at the rear of your 2014 Toyota 4Runner. I have attached a helpful article that shows you how to take this measurement. The article says it is for bike racks but the same principal applies for hitch-mounted carriers. I recommend the etrailer Cargo Carrier, part # e98874. This carrier fits 2 inch hitch receivers and measures 24 X 60, which is one of the largest cargo carriers we offer. This carrier has a shank...

  • Recommended Cargo Carrier and Light Kit for a 2016 Honda Odyssey
The 23x60 Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18151 would be an excellent option for the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76025 on a 2016 Honda Odyssey. There would be no clearance issues in either the stored or in-use position so no worries here. In order to add lights, the etrailer.com License Plate and LED Tail Light Mounting Kit part # e98943-44LED is a direct fit for the 23x60 Curt Cargo Carrier and you can use the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector...

  • Is Tow Ready J-Pin Stabilization Pin Compatible With Etrailer Cargo Carriers Threaded Hitch Pin?
The Tow Ready J-Pin Stabilization Pin and Barrel Lockset 63201 is made for hitch-mount accessories like cargo carriers that do not have a threaded hitch pin hole. Since the 24x62 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 does have a threaded hitch pin hole, you are going to want to use Threaded Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin Lock for etrailer Cargo Carriers - Keyed Alike # e99047. I attached a short demonstration video for you.

  • Folding Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2010 Toyota Sequoia that Will Not Sag
I have a few cargo carriers that I think you will be interested in. First, check out the Curt Aluminum Folding Cargo Carrier, # C18100. This is a lightweight carrier that will not sag and it falls within your budget. I have attached a demonstration video of this carrier that also shows a test drive with a load on the carrier. Another option is the etrailer Steel Folding Cargo Carrier, # e98874. This carrier is right around your price range and it has a longer shank with a 2 inch rise....

  • Will the 24x60 Cargo Carrier Work on my 2004 Ford Explorer Without Blocking my Taillights
As long as the Curt 24x60 Cargo Carrier, # e98874, is in the folded down position, you will have no problem with the carrier obstructing the taillights or the ability to access the cargo area on your 2004 Ford Explorer. Although the carrier will not affect these, the size and amount of cargo that is added to the carrier will. You will want to make sure that any taller cargo is placed in the middle of the rack to avoid blocking the taillights. Taller cargo could also limit access to the...

  • Will The Rola Cargo Carrier Part # 59502 Fit On My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
As long as you have a 2" hitch receiver like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13182, then you have many models from which to choose. I really like the # e98874. It is 24x60, has a mesh floor and rails, has a folding and tilting feature. It sits 19-1/2" from the hitch pin hole when in use and 9-1\2" when folded up when not in use. I included a video of it on a Jeep Wrangler for you to check out. For an anti-rattle locking hitch pin, I recommend using the Anti-Rattle Trailer...

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier For a 2016 Mazda CX-5 With Rise To Prevent Dragging
I recommend the 20x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874 for your 2016 Mazda CX-5. This carrier has an 2" rise to position the cargo carrier higher on your Mazda. This carrier only weighs 48lbs and can support up to 500lbs. If you notice it is the receiver on your Mazda that is contacting the ground you will want to try the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector # RM-050 that will roll on the ground rather than digging into it with the receiver.

  • Reflector Solution for Use with etrailer Cargo Carrier e98874
For reflectors to use with the etrailer cargo carrier you have now # e98874 we normally recommend the # RE10RB which is a quantity of 2. These have an adhesive backing that you can use to apply them to the railings of the carrier. This would be the easiest solution but these also have holes you could use to drill into the carrier and permanently like that as well. Where you want to install them is up to you though.

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2012 Subaru Outback With a 7 Inch Clearance
If your 2012 Subaru Outback requires 7 inches of clearance, then we have a couple of folding options that will work. Folding options have more clearance to allow for the folding. These both have plenty of room when in use and both have enough room, even when folded up. We have two cargo carriers that will clear the 7 inch clearance you need. The etrailer 24 X 60 Folding Cargo Carrier, # e98874, measures 9-1\2" inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge on the...

  • Will the etrailer Cargo Carrier for RV Bumper Work Without a Bumper or What Options Are There
I have an alternate option for you, but the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for RV Bumper # e99049 is designed to be used with RV bumpers, since you do not have a bumper this will not work for your E-Pro by Forest River. Instead, you would want to look at a hitch mounted cargo carrier like the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874. If your RV does not have a hitch, I have provided a couple options below depending on your frame width. If your trailer frame is 18"-51" Wide -...
