Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I replaced my old 185/80/13 bias ply tires and wheels with this larger radial tire set. It rolls over bumps better, and highway ride is smoother and getting slightly better MPG. Took them to a tire shop to get them balanced for the best ride. Would definitely buy the same thing again.

by:

Ordering was quick and easy, and arrival was on time. No problems with either the tire or wheel as to date. I have ordered other products from etrailer, and i have been very satisfied.

by:

Brandon G. @ trailer is fantastic. He researched the specs of my past trailer tire purchase and made sure they matched this purchase. The tires arrived at the campground two days earlier than quoted. I appreciate Brandon’s help.

by:

I bought two of these tires to replace original ones on my work trailer. These are high quality tires and rims and were an exact replacement for the originals. Very happy with my purchase

by:

Tires and wheels arrived on time. Quality is very good and the price is very reasonable. I will definitely use etrailer again.

Just wanted to let you know that tire and rim Just what I needed thanks also thanks for the other order for two tires excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not happy receiving tires with a date code from 2021. That means they have been sitting for over a year and a half. It is almost July 2023. Length of life for trailer tires is based on date code from my understanding. Otherwise the wheels and tires look good.

When it comes to trailer tires the age of the tire is only a problem if it has not been stored properly. If it has been kept out the of the elements and kept inside, then it will not suffer damage from sun or dry rot. It is difficult to find trailer tires that have a date code less than 6 months old because from the time they start making them to the time they arrive on shelves is at least 6 months. Sometimes longer depending on when the manufacturer receives the shipments in. The five-year warranty on the tire against defect begins when you receive it versus when it was manufactured.

by:

So far so good, wheels/tires were delivered promptly in 5 days, they are replacing 185/80r13's on a 6x10 trailer with a single 3,500 pound axle, I chose a larger tire to increase ground clearance, smooth out the ride, and reduce revolutions of bearings, only modification needed was to raise fenders, I also had tires balanced as this will reduce wear on tires, bearings, and suspension, tires are on and 20 mile ride home was smooth and trailer tracked well, more pics to come....

FANTASTIC!1010 Tires and wheels are performing extremely well, finish on wheels shows no signs of wear or corrosion, I try not to expose trailer to road salt but they have seen some and they look great. Tires provide a very smooth quiet ride along with added suspension due to their required 50 psi air pressure allowing them to flex over rough terrain compared to higher pressures needed on previous tires which rode like hockey pucks. Wear on tires is minimal to none, at least not noticeable and I check each trip which is at least weekly, sometimes several days per week, mind you I often run loads 50-90 of tires capacity. Money very well spent!

Excellent service, delivery and quality !!

by:

Great product and FAST shipping.

by:

I purchased this wheel and tire as an extra spare for my smaller enclosed car trailer as we will be going on a 1,600 mile trip. I have not yet used the tire, but it and the wheel appear to be good quality. I am extremely satisfied with the price, which included shipping! The delivery date was as described!

by:

These tires and wheels will be used on a car dolly towed behind a class C motor home. I have always been satisfied with products from etrailer. I really appreciate the free shipping. Thanks for the rapid service.

by:

The white wagon wheels look good, the spare tire mount is perfect, and all was a great price! Great service, fast shipping and just what I needed to have my rig safe and ready.
Time to go sailing!

by:

Just received them and they appear to a good quality tire/rim combination. I'll see how they perform once they are balanced and installed on the trailer.

by:

Replacement tires and wheels for my trailer from etrailer fit perfectly.
Great quality and UPS shipping.
Wheels arrived quickly and with no signs of damage.

by:

Great product and service... Thank you.

by:

I was very impressed with the product. The tire and rim look excellent. It came in a box. Others do not. I would order again. Shipping took longer then I thought to get shipped. But once shipped it got here in a day I think.

by:

Exactly what I needed. My first order came wrong but they quickly rectified it.

by:

Tires arrived a day early. Fit my Jayco trailer perfectly. Wheels look good. The price was good. No complaints.

by:

Products were as ordered. The delivery company lost one of my items in transit, said they received an empty box. Contacted etrailer and a replacement was shipped the same day. Thank you for the great customer service. Would order from etrailer again.

by:

Good tire, no issues. Happy with the etrailer service.

by:

Felt that I should have a spare tire and wheel for my utility trailer. This was the perfect spare, correct size and the wheel even matched what I had

by:

Here is a photo of the wrong Tire you guys sent me. You shipped it across country to Nevada in the desert where I reside where it's too inconvenient to return! Sent me a 75D 3 ply.

My neighbors and I have bought many items from etrailer - this great company never disappoints. This product arrived quickly and took less than an hour to install on one of my neglected utility trailers. Etrailer had several options for replacement wheels and I really like that. Communication after the order is better than most online sellers. Order tracking is first class.
Not a single farm store or retail store within 50 miles had the common replacement wheels for a utility trailer and didn’t seem to care. Don’t waste your valuable time. These guys have what you need and will get it to you fast.

by:

Great product and customer service. Would purchase from again.

For this, I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel part # AM32395 which is a complete assembly ready to bolt-on.

  • Wheel Offset Differences on Tandem Axle Trailer
You should never change the wheel offset on your trailer or use different offsets on tandem axle trailers. Your axles should match, as should your tires. Your wheels can differ in style, but they should not differ in offset. This basically means your rear axle will track differently than your front axle on your 1984 Frontier travel trailer. Offset means the wheels and tires will either stick out further from the frame (negative offset) or be closer to the frame (positive offset)....

  • Can Passenger Car Wheels be Used on a Trailer
There aren't really any rules for using wheels designed for passenger vehicles on a trailer like there are for tires but by the time you have the old tires dismounted and the new tires mounted/balanced, it will end up being more cost effective to just replace both the wheel/tire together. • Do Trailer Rims and Wheels Come Balanced
Trailer tires do not have to be balanced but what is normally done when a tire and wheel combo is put together by the manufacturer is a sort of balancing. They take the heavy spot on the tire and line it up with the light spot on the wheel. The problem with balancing a trailer tire is that the weights typically fall off from the bumpier ride quality a trailer will have when unloaded.

I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM32395. Please note, changing wheels and tire won't allow for 2" of lift on pretty much any application. • Will 4 of the ST205/75R15 Load Range C Tires be Enough for a 7,000 Pound Trailer
On a tandem axle trailer using a total of 4 tires in size ST205/75R15 load range C would have the capacity for a 7,000 pound trailer. The total capacity of all 4 tires would be 7,280 pounds. Be sure to always inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. For # AM32395 that would be 50 psi. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. If under inflated the sidewall will generate excessive heat and cause the tire to fail.
