What Are the Limitations for Upgrading to Larger Wheels and Tires On a Single Axle Cargo Trailer
Question:
I have a 7x12 single axle cargo with a 3500lbs leaf spring axle. I would like to run a much larger tire and would like to know what are the limiting factors? The wheels are clear of the frame on the sides. Is it possible to move the fenders higher and simply bolt on bigger wheels? Im willing to swap axles to make it work and would like to know what parts I would need. Thanks!

The main consideration for choosing a new wheel and tire size for a trailer is space, assuming you want to go larger. The space you will need to measure is from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender and from the inside of the tire to the outside of the frame. We recommend at least 3" on top and 1" on the inside. The Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel part # AM32395 for example measures 27.12" diameter x 7.99" wide. It has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. If you compare this to your existing tire you can then determine if you have enough space to run this size or if you need to make more space as you said moving the fender i.e. I have attached our full list of tire/wheel combos below if you would like a different size.
Please note, the trailer hub must also be rated for the wheel size you want to run.
