Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Super Fast shipping and a flawless transaction. From Missouri to Tennessee in 2 days. Very well packaged. Would definitely recommend. A little more expensive but I needed a higher load range and higher quality tire. Noticed also the valves stems are steel, not rubber

Bought two of the 12" Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire & White Wheel for my Pontoon Boat Trailer. Came on time and was perfect. I've put a lot of miles on it taking my pontoon to different finger lakes in NW PA and they perform perfectly and I travel 70 mph. Definitely recommend this tire and wheel and company as it came exactly as they said it would. Will not hesitate to buy from them again.

One year review kenda d-rated trailer tires. No issues to report with these tires and rims. D-rating put to the test on several gravel pit runs. etrailer is still a five star company provide prompt service, knowledgable staff and reliable products.

by:

I received these tires in a timely fashion. I have not had the opportunity to put them on my trailer yet but I feel that they will be a great tire. The rating was just what I needed to see as I will be hauling my Indian full-dressed motorcycle on this trailer at times. I didn't want to trust the old tires that came on the trailer.

Great price and fast shipping! Etrailer.com is a great place to do business.

FIRST THE LADY I TALKED TO BEFORE I ORDERED THE PRODUCT WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL.
I FOUND THE PRICE TO BE VERY GOOD AND THE SPEED IN WHICH I RECEIVED THE PRODUCT WAS JUST GREAT. I DO INTEND TO ORDER ONE MORE TIRE. THANKS FOR GREAT SERVICE AND THE TIRES LOOK GREAT AND FIT GREAT ON MY BOAT TRAILER.

After a year of no problems and about 1000 miles I would recommend this company and product.

by:

We bought a pair of these tires/wheels a year ago and put them on our Teardrop camper trailer. We later traveled Route 66 from Missouri to the California border, through Death Valley with temps near 120 degrees and from there North through the remainder of California, Oregon and Washington. We then headed East through Montana, the Dakotas and a corner of Minnesota before returning to Iowa. The tires performed flawlessly, All in all we put a little over 8,000 miles on them.

Would definitely recommend them to anyone.

by:

Good fit, and no problems and fast shipping what else can you ask for?

by:

etrailer.com was very easy to deal with. Found the product I needed very quickly, ordered it. Love the free shipping.

I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them in the future.

This isnt rocket science but even a year later these tires and rims have totally performed as advertised. Meeting expectations isnt something to be taken for granted - good job!

by:

Fit just like the old ones in every way. These have the good metal valve steams that seem to last longer for me then the rubber cased ones. Etrailer has the best price I could find, and load range D that I could not find local. These also came in a box (well 2 boxes, 2 units per box) which I was somewhat surprised on, I have ordered wheels and tires before from other vendors and they were just tied together with cardboard on the wheel, it was nice to see these actually in a box. Will come back to etrailer when I need to replace these again, its somewhat of an odd ball size as well so I was glad to find them somewhere in stock.

by:

I've ordered from etrailer at least once in the past and the hard-core RV people I work with swear by your company. I omitted my e-mail address on my online order and got nervous when I hadn't heard anything, called etrailer after 5 pm and they promptly located my order (it had shipped!) and updated it to include my e-mail address. Can't wait to install the load range D tires and enjoy a worry free 200 mile trek to Inks Lake State Park.

  • Available Replacement Wheels & Tires for 1992 Coleman Destiny Camper Trailer
The tire size I think you have is 5.30-12, which fits on a wheel 12-inches in diameter and 4-inches wide. We do still offer this tire size and you can see all available products, both tires only and wheel/tire combination items, on the linked page. In the wheel/tire category we offer two wheel bolt patterns with this size tire, the 4-on-4-inch pattern and the popular 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. I recommend going with the Kenda 225/55B12 Bias Golf Cart Tire # AM1HP60 which will be 3.3" wider and the same overall height than the 5.30-12 tires but will require a 12x7 wheel which unfortunately we do not carry. To determine if you will be able to change from the 5.30-12 Trailer Tire # AM30859 to a ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM31994 you will need to measure your tire clearance on your Fleetwood Taos. The 175/80R13 is 2.1" taller and 1.5" wider than your 5.30-12 you currently have. So you will want to ensure you have 1-3/4" of space on your sidewalls and 4.1" of vertical clearance on the tread face. This will ensure that you have enough room for the suspension to flex and the sidewall will...

In the galvanizing process, depending on how the manufacturer dries the wheels some of it can run to one side making the wheel out of balance. That is an issue you are going to run into with many wheel manufacturers. • Recommended Tire And Wheel Sizes To Change To For A Camper With 5.70-8 Tires
When you say blowouts and attribute them to heat buildup, you are correct. The reason you have heat buildup in tires is not just because of the size, it will also be from overloading, damage to the tires and age. So to just change size first might not solve the problem. If the tires hit curbs a lot it would cause damage to the sidewalls and form a weak spot, which would allow the heat to buildup and go to the weakest spot in the tire and fail. Also any punctures or repairs to the tires...

All of the ST (Special Trailer) tires that we carry are DOT (Department of Transportation) rated for 65 miles per hour unless stated otherwise on the tire. It is not recommended to run a trailer tire at a higher speed than 65 miles per hour due to the heat buildup that will occur inside the tire and cause the tire to break down and cause the tire to fail. All trailer tires are constructed with thicker sidewall dimensions for handling weight and are designed to be used at 65 miles per hour...

  • Will Kenda ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire Replace a 5.30x12 Trailer Tire
First, we do have 5.30x12 tire and wheel combos with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern available. For a load range D it would be # AM30859. This tire and wheel combo is rated for 1,250 pounds at 105 psi. It includes a white steel wheel. The Kenda S-Trail ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire, # AM31202, with galvanized spoke wheel is only 0.1 inches wider and 0.6 inches shorter so it will most likely fit. It is rated for 1,220 pounds at 65 psi. I have included links to tire and wheel FAQ articles for you.

The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire and Wheel, # AM30859, has a zero offset. But it sounds like you are talking about backspacing. The backspacing is 2-1/2 inches. I calculated this by taking the wheel width, 4 inches from bead to bead, then adding 1 inch to account for both lips of the wheel. Take that 5 inches and divide it by 2 to get the backspacing. The width of the tire as mounted on the wheel is 5-1/2 inches and it is 22 inches tall. Offset would be where the mounting and pilot...
