Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (10025 Customer Reviews)

The two 4.80-12 trailer tires came well packaged. They held some air but had to be inflated to 90 psi. The paint job was nice and I observed no chips. Each wheel had a black and red stripe around the outer ring. The tires were labeled LOAD STAR with a load rating of C and two ply sidewalls. I checked and Load Star tires are made by Kenda so that satisfied me. I am looking forward to many trouble free miles with these tires. Free and fast shipping was also appreciated.

Thanks for the follow up email. Everything is fine and I am satisfied.

This replacement tire/wheel is built well and the price was better than I could get it locally. I prefer to shop on Etrailer because of the selection, speed of shipping and customer service.

by:

Perfect replacement wheels and tires for my trailer.

by:

The wheel/tire assembly I purchased from etrailer arrived promptly and seems to be excellent quality. It replaced the wheel shown at the left in the picture, that failed on Interstate 95 north of Jacksonville, FL. Your wheel is so good we decided to buy another to avoid a similar experience with our other old wheel and tire in the center in the picture. The second wheel we purchased from you is obviously the one on the right. Thanks for the good products and service.

by:

Wheel and tire arrived within one week of order date. It is exactly as pictured on the web site. This is installed as the spare on a 4'X 6' open trailer with ramp and 2,000 lb capacity. I use the trailer to haul firewood, recycling branches and yard waste and scrap metal. From my initial inspection, the product appears to meet all the specs quoted and should work admirably for the intended use.

Tire and wheel are great. Tire wears well, holds air with no loss and has no cracking from sun exposure. I can recommend these tires and wheel sets.

by:

I bought these 12 inch tires and rims to replace the old 8 inch. They were exactly what I needed. They fit perfectly on the hubs and I am sure they will keep the bearings lasting for a long time. I am very pleased with this purchase. Thanks for a great product.

I could not be happier! Has made many short trips to the lake with no problems. In October pulled it 150 miles and again no problems. Thank-you for a great product.

by:

As advertised! Easy ordering, quick/free shipping!

by:

Tires and wheels arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I put them on a trailer I found on Craigslist This is a homemade boat I just got done with. I took it out on the highway and drove 75mph for about 5 miles. My first impression was great product. The trailer tracked as straight as an arrow. I'll follow up if I have any problems.

by:

Great product and service. Got delivered earlier than expected!!!

by:

tires and wheels came really fast. Was very pleased. Product looked great. Wish boat tires came with more tread but must be some reason.
Such a good feeling to have new load range c tires and wheels.. I should have done this two years earlier. It's never fun heading up fishing and worrying about having tire trouble. Great prices. Now I have a ugly great boat and good looking tires and wheels.

by:

etrailer comes through again! I went to a local retailer for a trailer tire or two and he wanted to charge me about $70 just to put a new tire on an old rim. I went to etrailer.com and found a brand new tire And rim for $xx.xx and it was just what I was looking for. So I bought 2. I refer this company every chance I get to all my friends and family. The tires came two days early, and with free shipping ! I could not be happier. That’s how you do business. Thanks etrailer.com

by:

Wow...ordered Wednesday morning, received Friday morning. Pleased, and how exciting!
Used info on the etrailer site to pre-build new fenders (not shown) to accommodate new tires & rims - fit is perfect! The 480x12 LRC tires & rims (Kenda #AM30660) replace the too small 480x400-8 LRB's (see pic) that always worried me on day-long trips. The new tires give me a critical bit more ground clearance and are Load C rated to 65mph. They even came with high pressure metal inflation valves, which were an unexpected bonus. Mounted on the smallish-size trailer I use to haul my 12' rowboat, 6HP motor & gear all around our Adirondack Park lakes and Lake Ontario, I know they are just the thing that was needed to overcome highway miles and backwoods rocky trails too. Thanks etrailer and George J for great service, prices and products!

by:

My smallish tilt-bed utility trailer had old dry-rotted tires that would be flat after a week. etrailer fixed that with a new pair of shoes for the old girl... 4.80 - 12 tires on 4 1/2" 5 bolt rims that my 16 year old daughter installed by herself. Next morning we hauled 91 total 60 pound retaining wall blocks in 3 trips with no issues. The wheeled tires riding on new etrailer 5-leaf springs made the job a joy.

by:

Exactly as described. None of the stores in my area had what I was looking for. Very professional. This website had a really good price for my wheels, I will be using this website again for purchases in the future.

Still strong as ever, we bought another trailer and if those tires go bad I’ll know where to order

by:

Nice tires and rims. Just a little paint missing by one hole on each wheel.

I balanced both wheels and they didn't require much weight

by:

Just purchased a used landscape trailer that had wheels in poor condition.
I was able to get these new wheels and tires for about the same price it
would have cost me for just new wheels. Great price, fast and friendly
service and prompt delivery. Thank you for a pleasant experience.

by:

Great price, great value, no way you'll find these for this cost locally. Free shipping was nice bonus! Ordered with chrome lugs and chrome center caps. Had to pop the center covers off to make the caps fit. If you measure and the size is the same on the covers, order the next bigger size.

by:

Good price and fast shipping.

by:

I am impressed that etrailer makes the purchase of trailer equipment as easy as can be. I am a repeat customer. I recommend this company.

by:

Looks good. Taking a 600 mile trip with the trailer. Will review again after the trip. Customer service has always been great.
The ratchet staps are substantial, and look like they are sure to keep the load in place.

by:

Quick and easy transaction / delivery. Quality product at a fair price. Web site as well as tracking application were flawless.

by:

Tires arrived on time with no obvious damage or problems. We have not used them yet, we will see how they hold up in our 100+ degree weather on the road. I’ll reevaluate once they’ve been tested

by:

Great tires at a great price!

by:

I am very happy with tire & wheel from E Trailer..fair price, fast service and good quality.

by:

Tires were good at low price trailer doesn’t get used much. It’s ready to go when I want it. It has about 1000 miles on the new/ 1 year old tires good ware I would buy again

  • Do You Have The Kenda 4.80-12 In Load Range C On a 12" X 4" White Wheel 5 On 4-1/2" Lug Pattern?
The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30660 is the one you are looking for. It has a 6-ply construction that is rated for 990lbs per tire. It is the same size tire and wheel as the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B # AM30580 that you found on our site.

  • Determining Correct Axle To Upgrade Single 3500lb Axle Boat Trailer To 5200lb Axle
Since you have a single axle that is rated to 3500lbs, and the combined tire rating is also 3500lbs, I do not recommend using the trailer as it is with the weight of the trailer and boat being 4400lbs. Before making any changes I recommend verifying the maximum weight capacity of the trailer with the manufacturer, as just changing the axles and suspension may still not give you the weight capacity you need. If your trailer does have a high enough weight capacity for the weight you mentioned,...

The tire that's used on the # AM30660 combination is the Kenda K353 12 inch Bias Trailer Tire- Load Range C # AM10062 does not have a speed rating printed on it, so the default speed rating is 65mph; this tire does adhere to DOT standards. • Replacement Wheels and Tires for 4.8-12 Trailer Tires with White Wheels and 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern
I'll start off by saying that when it comes to reading the 4.8-12 tire size you're referencing, the 4.8 number refers to the size of the section width- 4.8"; the second number is the wheel diameter. Section width is the total width from sidewall to sidewall on the tires, but the tread width you're referring to is just the measurement of the crown of the tire. They were selling you basically the same tire and the difference in tread width is really negligible at the end of the day; it also...

  • Changing Trailer Tires and Wheels from 4.80-8 to 4.80-12
Yes, you can use the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tires, # AM30660 you mentioned, as long as you are able to raise the fenders on your trailer. With the trailer fully loaded to capacity, you need to maintain at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to the underside of the fender top for normal suspension travel. The diameter of the # AM30660 tire & wheel combo is 4.6" larger than your current 4.40-8 tire and wheel combo. So, you will need to move your fenders before you can mount...

  • Why Are The Factory Tires on My Trailer Rated for Less Than the GVWR
When it comes to load capacity, we typically just try to make it easy by recommending trailer tires that provide a combined load capacity that meets or (ideally) exceeds the trailer's loaded weight. With that being said when technicalities are brought in, it is important to note that 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's weight comes as tongue weight that's being applied to the tow vehicle. This means that in reality just about 3,257 to 3,448 pounds (using the trailer's 3,832 pound GVWR) of...

  • Importance of Trailer Wheel Pilot Hole Diameter
The importance of matching a wheel's pilot hole diameter to the part of the hub that fits through it depends on the type of wheel. A hub-centric wheel uses the pilot hole to center the wheel on the hub and also to bear some of the total weight load (the rest going on the wheel bolts). Hub-centric wheels typically use wheel bolts rather than lug nuts to attach to the hub. If your wheels are hub-centric, you would want new wheels with the same pilot hole diameter as your current wheels because...

The 205/75-15 load range D tires we offer from Kenda, part # AM10245, Taskmaster # TR20515D and Westlake # LHWL300 should all be inflated to the maximum air pressure listed on the tire sidewall which is 65 psi. The weight rating for a 15 inch tire in that size with that load rating (2150 lbs) is based on the tire being fully inflated to 65 psi. If the tire is not fully inflated, the tires weight capacity will be unknown which could lead to problems like blowouts or uneven tire wear.
