Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Very nice tires for a great price. I installed them on our little StarCraft Tent trailer, upgrading from the stock 8inch tire/wheel combination. Absolutely zero modification on this particular trailer, both on the hubs and the rear spare tire mount. Raised the stance a bit and trails better than ever. I have approx 1000 miles on them and so far no wear to speak of. A most beneficial upgrade!

by:

After looking around for a while in all local store for the right tires size for my trailer without any luck a friend send me the link to etrailer and after browsing their website for 2 minutes I found the tires I needed, I ordered them and received them within a week. Tires look exactly as shown on their website and the shipping was free ( purchase over XXX.00 I think. I highly recommend etrailer.

Just finished a harbor freight 4 x 8 trailer and turning it into a kayak trailer. Class B tires came with the trailer and I am immediately replacing them with the Kenda Class C 4.80 x 12" from etrailer.com. This gives me a higher speed tire and at least I can "feeL" safer at 65 mph or so if I have to speed a little to go around a car or on the Interstate. Very impressed with these tires and fast shipping received. Here is picture of trailer.

My Kenya tires still going strong 1 year later. I have about 3000 miles on the tires with most trips at 60-70 mph. I have repacked my wheel bearings at 1500 miles just because I like to err on the safe side. No flats, no problems - Highly recommend.

by:

Tires and rims have performed well, put roughly 2k miles on them so far in the first year(6 camping trips in our little tent trailer)

by:

I have only used the trailer a couple of times, but the wheel/tire assembly works great and still looks like new after a year out in the weather.

by:

I have more confidence and feel safer with the new tires (4.80-12) than the factory tires (4.80-8) installed on my 12 foot boat trailer. I feel that the trailer can be pulled at a higher speed without fear of a blow out which is necessary under certain driving conditions. Delivery of the new tires was super fast from etrailer. Thumbs up.

by:

Fast service, arrived a day early, good packaging, fantastic and attentive personal communication, quality product with great weight ratings. Thanks Guys!

by:

Etrailer.com once again came through with good quality tires and rims for a better price than I could find locally. Also local stores only sell Load range B while these are Load Range C. And Free Shipping! Also Etrailer.com has a terrific website, loaded with information to help choose the correct tire/rim/accessories that will fit, no hassle. I bought these 12" tires to replace the 8" ones on a boat trailer. They look great and give me more clearance. All of my trailers use tires and rims from Etrailer. Thanks.

by:

Not much to say other than its a trailer tire and the quality is good after a year. Tire shows no visual sign of wear so far, so I am pleased with the performance so far.

by:

The products were just as described. I installed them on a small utility trailer to gain ground clearance when 4 wheeling. I ordered them last Friday and they were shipped free within hours. I received them today (Wednesday), put them on and I couldn't be happier. Perfect fit. Would highly recommend.

by:

The tire was exactly as advertised and met my needs. I have never had a negative experience dealing with eTrailer.

by:

Had these tires before and always work great. I’m a traveling veteran and camp all over the US. Have to make sure I spend my grandchildren inheritance (even if it’s small)

by:

I bought these tires as a major upgrade from 8" to 12" tires on my 22 year old popup and have traveled cross country and back with a very smooth ride. It required adding another 3" of clearance for the larger tires, which also gave me more ground clearance. I buy all my trailer accessories from etrailer!

by:

Outstanding! Excellent price, Same Brand wheel/Tire combo that I could by Locally, But with etrailer I got 3 for what 2 would cost me locally and I got load C instead of B. Shipping was fast, and free. I added a pic of these wheels mounted on my "work in progress" trailer. Also email updates were a nice personal touch!

by:

I just want to say that it’s just as cheap or cheaper to order these from etrailer as it is to order tires and have them mounted. And these are Kenda!

by:

Great wheel and tire. I ordered 3 each, one for a spare.
1 box with one tire came yesterday, the other 2 came today.
I wish they would have came all at once since the tracking number was for the 1 wheel and I was not provided with the other tracking number I did not know if I was getting the whole shipment.
I used them on an old pop up trailer that I converted to haul my dirt bike

by:

Fit perfectly, and shipped really fast! Very well satisfied.

by:

Great upgrade from my little 8" wheels on my pop up camper. Ordered on Wednesday and it was delivered on Friday.

by:

I ordered two tires for a trailer, and they were here in 2 days. High quality tires with rims at an affordable price. This is why I keep coming to eTrailer for all our trailer needs.

by:

correct merchandise with prompt deliver y.

by:

Great upgrade from the old 8" wheel and tire.

by:

5 stars, product just as described and appears to be a good quality. Received the item guickly. Excellent price. Highly recommend .

by:

Very impressed with the wear thus far of this tire. Driven 1300 miles already and it still looks great. Handled up to 65 mph. No problems.

by:

They are holding up well.
A week after
getting them I drove from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas and back with my little trailer behind me. I was glad to have gotten good new tires.

by:

Very nice wheel and tire package. No vibration at speed and they look very nice on the trailer

  • 4.80x12 Wheel and Tire Combo Recommendation for a Kayak Trailer
When buying a replacement wheel and tire you will first want to match the tire size you have, which would be 4.80x12, and then match the bolt pattern of your current wheels so that the wheel will mount up. I attached a link to a page that has all of the whee/tire combos we carry that are confirmed to fit as a replacement, but the closest one to the one you referenced would be the part # AM30660. This has the same tire size as what you have and has a 5 lug bolt pattern like what you have...

  • How Much Clearance Is Needed To Upgrade From 4.80/4.00-8 To 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
A 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tire like part # AM10002 measures 16.1" in diameter. A 4.80-12 trailer tire like part # TT48012C measures 20.6" in diameter. Therefore, you'll need to account for an increase in height of 2.25". The recommend clearance from a trailer tire to the fender is around 3". If you do choose to upgrade, I recommend the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30620.

I recommend the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30620 which has the exact 4.80-12 tire you need, and also a wheel with the 4 on 4" bolt pattern to match the hub on your trailer. You may also be interested in a spare tire carrier to secure the wheel to your trailer. For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, I recommend Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel, # AM30620. This is a load range C tire with a 6 ply rating and 990 pound capacity at 90 psi. It comes with a 12 inch white rim. This tire/wheel combo is rated for a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour. • Replacing 4.80-8 Trailer Tire with a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire and Wheel Combination
It is possible that there exists a 4.80-12 Tire and Wheel combo with a 2.5 inch pilot diameter. All of the ones we carry are 2.8 to 2.84. A larger pilot diameter will not matter as long as the wheels are stud piloted or lug centric (meaning the wheels are centered on the hub by the lug nuts). If not, then the pilot diameter will need to match the hub (hub centric). A hub centric wheel will use wheel bolts that go through the wheel and into the hub instead of lug nuts. One thing you will...

  • Steering Wheel Shakes in Vehicle While Towing Trailer
There are a few different causes for the steering wheel to shake while towing. The tires as you mentioned could be out of balance but they would have to be pretty far off in order to shake the vehicle's steering wheel. The way the trailer is loaded is also a potential cause. The trailer needs to be loaded so that 60% of the weight is in front and 40% is in the back. Have you tried to load the UTV further forward or backward? The last potential cause I can see is a stiff suspension. If the...

  • Trailer Tire Miles Per Hour Rating
That is correct, all of our 12 inch, 4 on 4 trailer tires are rated for maximum highway speeds of 65 mph. This is a normal speed rating for trailer tires. I recommend our Taskmaster brand trailer tires, such as the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30620. This tire has a rating of load range C. If you need a 5.30-12 tire, you could use Kenda # AM30790. I have attached a link to all of our 12 inch, 4 on 4 trailer tires.

If the bolt pattern of your hubs is 4 on 4 inch (see linked article about how to determine wheel bolt pattern) then you absolutely can use a 12 inch wheel. You'll just want to make sure that the tires you choose have a capacity greater than or equal to the loaded weight of your trailer. The # AM3S331 trailer wheel/tire combo you looked at uses a 13 inch wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. • If Trailer Sticker and Tire Sidewall List Two Different PSI Rating Which to Go By
Yes, tire manufacturer spec would be the proper PSI to use for your current tires. The list on the trailer itself is for what the trailer came with but it's very common for people to go with a different tire so at that point it would no longer be relevant.

  • Can 4.80-8 Tires be Replaced by 4.80-12 Tires on a Harbor Freight Trailer
You may be able to go to a 4.80-12 tire and wheel combo if there is enough available space all around the existing tires for the larger size. A 4.80-12 tire will be 4.4 inches taller and just a few tenths of an inch wider than a 4.80-8 tire. The width does not concern me but the height is a big difference. You will need more than 2.2 inches of free space above the existing tires to go to the larger size. If you have the room you can go to the larger size. Keep in mind that the larger tires...

That said, your best option for a trailer tire in the size of 4.80-12 that you referenced is the Taskmaster tire part # TT48012C as unlike the other tires in this size it is the preferred radial tire style and has the highest speed rating of 81 mph.
