Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I needed a new set of tires for a camper I recently sold. I had bought trailer tires from etrailer in the past with great results. My expectations were met and exceeded again this time. The quality of the product, the communication, the price and the speed of delivery cannot be surpassed. I got a great set of Kenda tires on USA made rims for a great price. Tires are kind of like brake jobs, do you really want a cheap one? Sure A****n is great for a lot of stuff but I’m not going to go barreling down the road towing a trailer on poor quality tires. Do yourself a favor and get it right the first time. It’ll save you money in the long run!

Needed to replace a tire made in 2019 which was punctured in the tread on a rocky mountain road during a hunting trip. Tire was on my trailer which I pull camping gear in. New tires arrived on time in good shape. I did notice some minor differences from the tires purchased in 2019. The inside of the rim isn't painted as well, can see some grey where paint isn't thick and the lettering on the tire (load range, year made, etc.) isn't as crisp or sharply defined. Don't think this make a difference in performance, but is noticeable when comparing to the last set I ordered 3 years ago.

Have used the tire on a hunting trip last Christmas where it was a 4 hour trip one way. Trailer was lightly loaded, so havent really put the tire to the test yet, but a year in, the tire is still in good shape.

My experience with your company was excellent. I mistakenly double ordered but someone named George J (?) quickly helped me straighten out my mistake. The tires/wheels were delivered quickly. Perfect fit. Outstanding from start to finish.

by:

Great looking tires and rims. Perfect fit also. I will be shopping here at etrailer.com for more of my trailer needs. Fast service and delivery also !!

by:

Hello, I purchased 3 of these (one for a spare) tire/wheel combinations from etrailer.com for my utility trailer. The price was great & the shipping was fast. My trailer originally had 4.80-8 tires and rims.
I wanted something a little taller. The trailer also had quite a bit of tire/fender clearance. To lower the trailer deck back down, I flipped the axle over and ran the leaf springs under the axle. I then re-drilled the fender mounting locations to regain the clearance that I had lost. All of this was quite simple. I will use etrailer.com again in the future. I would not hesitate to recommend them for all of your trailer needs.

by:

Delivered in strong package, tires and rims as shown and in a timely manner, thanks.

@Michael We're glad to hear your replacement tire worked well for you!

by:

Honestly, I have not put many miles on the tires. But they are good, the shipping and service was great.

by:

Kenda tires were the OEM tires on my single axle Viking Pop Up. The original tires were weather cracked from 6 years of outside storage, so I decided to replace them even though they had plenty of tread left. The wheels were still like new, so I thought I'd save some $$ and I buy replacement tires only from my local RV store (not Kenda brand). I had a difficult time finding a tire shop that would mount 12 inch wheels. I bargained with used tire shop and paid $25 to mount and balance two tires. The money I saved on the tires, I spent mounting them. With less than 2 years on those generic tires I had a blowout on the highway, fortunately no damage done to camper, but the wheel was destroyed. I learned my lesson. I should have bought the Kenda tires. I have probably 3 to 4000 miles on these new tires, and they look like new.

by:

Just wanted to thank E trailer for the very quick service on the replacement tires and rims for my recently purchased pop up camper. This the second purchase I have made from E trailer and it goes without saying that the quality and price of the items I purchased this time were of the highest quality and below any price I could find locally here in Milwaukee or on the internet. I had previously purchased a trailer hitch and trailer light hook up kit from E trailer , and with the help of their great install videos , installation was a snap for my 2006 Ford escape. I think 3 day service ground delivery is unheard of these days. Kudos to the shipping and receiving and order entry people at E trailer . I will be back that is for sure.

Olivia at etrailer.com
I now have lug
nuts and extra beer money!
I had to do a lot of planning for this application. It took months to find hubs to fit these 3/4 " straight spindles (Hub Part# AZ2298) which were obtained through another source. Gone are the factory wheelbarrow tires.. l upgraded to these nice 4 on 4 wheels and 5.30 - 12 tires which were promptly shipped free and on time all the way from Wentzeville Missouri to Bend Oregon. Thank You Olivia for a pleasant experience and Cheers from Bend!

by:

I was running 4.80x12 tires on my homemade camping trailer but they were worn out. I decided to upgrade to these 5.30x12 tires because of the increased weight capacity. They were a great fit for the trailer and the price couldn't be beat.

by:

The wheels came with the tires fully inflated, (I checked before installing). Fit was perfect and most of all the price was better than buying a tire and having it installed and balanced. They looked great on the pop up camper I converted to a trailer.

by:

Needed to upgrade some 8" wheels and tires on my discount hardware store-purchased DIY trailer. Doing more and more highway travelling and wanted something that would roll easier and handle higher speeds.
I placed the order on Tuesday afternoon and hoped that I would have on Friday before a beach vacation next week. Spoke with CS and they were very helpful. Called back once there was a tracking number and Phyllis (?) went so far as to call UPS and call me back!!! Almost unheard of these days. To my surprise, both wheels/tires shipped in 1 box and arrived today (Friday).
Trailer looks like a rockstar now instead a danky karaoke bar singer.
5 outta 5 will be recommending.

by:

Wheels and tires look great and were delivered on time. I would like to thank everyone that worked on my order.

by:

We ordered these to replace the tires on a tent trailer that had been sitting for over 4 years. etrailer got these sent to us in time to my the 900 mile drive back home.Having the rims and tires already mounted, saved me a bunch of time not having to go to a tire shop.

by:

Great looking tires and wheels and if you pull a trailer, if a tire is bad you know the rough tugging. These are smooth! No tugging.

by:

I hope this messages finds you well.

Please
see the attached pictures from Thomas from Indiana. He sent in pictures of the tire and wheel assemblies he bought from us, part# AM30780. He was a pleasure to work with and is taking his trailer up to Manitoba near the Arctic Circle. I thought I would share with you so you can consider adding them to the product page.

by:

Great service! Ordered these for my 18 year old cargo trailer. They arrived quicker than expected and were ready to install right out of the box! Looks great!

by:

Worked out well for me. Fast delivery and good price
I needed some tires to move a Bart find boat.

by:

Good wheel, good price, came fast. The website even taught me how to measure my hubs to ensure I got the correct wheel!

by:

So far these look like great tires, exact match to the old ones originally put on the trailer. Only reason I’m giving it a 4 star is I won’t be able to use them till spring. Otherwise that they look and installed great!

by:

Super fast shipping!

by:

wheels look great, were delivered super fast and were reasonably priced . they are installed on a small 4x8 enclosed trailer.

by:

For the price this tire is a great fit for our popup camper and the communication from customer support was outstanding. Very fast shipping

by:

Just got back from a 400 mile trip. I installed these 12" tires on my Haulin utility trailer to replace the 8" tires on them, so I was safer on the freeway. I looked around town first for tires & rims, no one had a class C rated 4 on 4 rim & tire, so I have bought my hitches from etrailer. I checked their web site and they had it for a great price and I was very impressed with the quality of them.

  • Can 8 inch Trailer Wheel be Replaced with 12 inch Wheel and Tire
Trailer hubs that a 8 inch wheel can also fit a 12 wheel so yes you could upgrade to the larger wheel size. So you could use a 5.30-12 tire and wheel like the part # AM30780. The pilot diameter would be large enough to fit over the hub pilot. Since the wheel actually centers on the lug nuts and not the hub pilot it wouldn't be an issue.

  • Recommendation for 5.3-12 Trailer Tires
If you are in need of tires only, Kenda offers three different load ranges for a 5.3-12 trailer tire. The Load Range B tires, # AM10064, come with a maximum load rating of 840 pounds at 55 psi, Load Range C, # AM10066, with a maximum load rating of 1,045 pounds at 80 psi, and the Load Range D, # AM10068, a maximum load rating of 1,250 pounds at 105 psi. Hub-centric wheels center on the hub using the hub bore and wheel bolts rather than lug nuts to attach to the hub. If your wheels are...

  • Can a 5.30-8 Wheel and Tire on a Trailer be Replaced by a 5.30-12
If you have the fender and frame clearance needed for the larger size then you could go to the larger size. The larger 5.30-12 tire size will eat up about 2 more inches of fender clearance and would be about 5.6 inches in width. You will then need to match the bolt pattern of the wheel you want with what you currently have. If you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM30780 or if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the # AM30820.

  • Recommended Replacement Tires for Jayco Pop-Up Camper Trailer That Weighs 2000-lbs
We can help you select new 5.30-12 tires or this size tire pre-mounted on a 4-lug wheel if you prefer. All the 5.30-12 tires we offer are bias ply types; no radial tires are offered in this size. I suggest you use a Load Range D tire, part # AM10068 rated for 1,250-lbs at 105-psi pressure, since this will give you some safety margin. Tires that are operated conservatively - below their maximum capacity - will tend to run cooler and last longer. Heat is the enemy for any trailer tire. Radials...

A trailer tire of size 4.80-12 has an overall diameter of 20-1/2-inches and it is about 5-inches wide. You can switch to another size provided you have enough clearance within the fender wells and at the frame. But a tire of size 280/65-12 is more than twice as wide and would require wheels with a lot of negative offset to move the tire center further away form the trailer to avoid tire-to-frame contact. You would probably also need new fenders. We do not offer any special trailer tires...
