The first step in choosing the correct system for your needs is to determine the trailer's tongue weight when it's fully loaded and ready to tow. This figure should also include the weight of anything stowed behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. It's crucial that you choose the properly rated system for your trailer's tongue weight.. If you choos a system that's rated too high, the trailer will ride very rough. Choose a system that's rated too low, you can damage the spring bars.

For a trailer such as you describe your tongue weight would likely be in the 700-1000 lb range. If this is found to be true, I would recommend either the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System, part # RP66559 for moderate to severe sway or the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, part # RP66084 if the sway is more severe. I have included a FAQ article on determining tongue weight at right.

These two systems could be considered better and best systems, with the strait-line system being the best. The Strait-Line system literally forces the trailer to follow in line behind the tow vehicle, preventing sway from occurring before it can start.

You will need hitch balls with these weight distribution systems. For a Hitch Ball with a 2-5/16" diameter and medium shank, use # 19286. For a Hitch Ball with a 2" diameter and medium shank, use # A-90.

I have included a FAQ article on common weight distribution and sway control questions for you to check out.
